The film gives a glimpse of some of the tortures conducted during the Apartheid Era.
- Much of the tortures mentioned in the film actually occurred during the Apartheid era, including beatings, strangulation, mutilation, sexual assault with blunted weapons, electric torture, burns by acid and eventually the mass murders conducted by Apartheid overseers to root out suspected dissidents. Both Langston and Anna grow more and more horrified as they find out the true degree of tortures that were conducted. Even more horrifying for Anna is one of the perpetrators was her own brother.
- Even more horrifying are varieties of Complete Monster like Colonel De Jager who still believe all the tortures they did were justified in the name of serving his country and security, and gives a haunting answer when asked by Langston on how he could validate torturing men, women, and children while being a supposed family man.
Colonel De Jager : You know what you say? You know what you tell yourself after cutting a man's throat? You tell yourself you're saving your country. You're saving your country from a bunch of savages who would fuck your women, kill your children, destroy the country your forbearers created with their blood! You tell yourself that if Blacks get hold of this country, they'll drive it into the ground, like they did all the rest of Africa! You tell yourself that Blacks need us Whites to control them! Because they're not fucking human beings! You want to know what killing was like? Keeping someone on the edge of life because you needed information? I'll tell you: it was like having sex with a fucking woman for the first time! I'd never felt excitement like that! Sometimes I couldn't wait to go out at night and juice myself a kaffir!
