Nightmare Fuel / Dead Cells

Go To

DeadCells, beneath pixel art and occasional Black Comedy, is a terrifying tale of a doomed island kingdom where a mysterious Malaise brings forth some terrifying effects. Spoilers Unarmed!

     General
  • The state of the world. An island in the middle of nowhere, where a once prosperous kingdom stood, is overrun by monsters born from mysterious disease, leaving lands ravaged and destroyed, as well as laid with blood and gore. Not only that, but deeper lore shows that is a borderline Eldritch Location where everyone are caught in a "Groundhog Day" Loop, when day repeats but events don't, leading to multiple timelines appearing and disappearing, all eventually reset.
  • Malaise itself. It's not actually malaise, but rather a mysterious disease with a nickname that fits the closest... because it's nothing like any disease. It gives mutations that can resurrect dead, merge them with weaponry, drive people insane, mutate creatures into hostile predators and it's lethality is on a whole other level to the point that the local burial site is not enough. And there is no cure and no precaution seems to last. Worst of all is no one knows where it came from truly.
  • The Beheaded is a special case of undead with complete immortality. A blob-like... thing with a single glowing eye that can puppeteer corpses, and while his body can and will die from sustained damage, the parasite can never die, even if it's submerged in lava, chopped to pieces or blown apart.

     Locations
  • Prisoner Quarters may be tame compared to what awaits, but it's still a proper introduction for new players or those deciding to play on harder difficulties. There is a chopping block where Beheaded keeps emerging next to and it always has a fresh corpse to possess, a set of cells to incarcerate those infected and a ton of undead roaming the halls. The conditions are terrible, as prisoners were held even after they served their sentence, there are no windows and if there are, those who were next to them died from other reasons.
  • Promenade Of The Condemned is a gigantic forest where trees are adorned with cages like it's freaking Christmas. Wildlife is also dead and all that's left are crows. Let's also not forget many hangings as lore areas.
  • Toxic Sewers has many corpses lying around in the waste. It is also the first area that shows that Malaise can affect wildlife, turning animals into monstrous creatures. It is also a source of one of the Multiple-Choice Past origins of Malaise, coming from corpses dumped into sewers.
  • Dilapidated Arboretum seems peaceful.... Except it has gigantic monstrous plants that can swallow you whole and traces of experiments, such as people trapped in a tree before dying or a gigantic beaker that is full of skulls. Of note are also multiple orders to burn the place down despite King's Gardener's protests.
  • Prison Depths are even more bleak and oppressive than Quarters, reserved for the worst of prisoners. All who entered here never left, making it a dreaded place for anyone. Taken on to the next level with it's alternate version, Corrupted Prison, which is stated to have prisoners experimented on and is overgrown by purple Meat Moss.
  • Ramparts are unscalable walls of prison which have corpses of failed escapees hanged on them as a message. This is also where prisoners were thrown off, guards delighting in the screams of those dragged to their doom, or used as target practice.
  • Ancient Sewers have many trails of something mutating and cocooning, not to mention being filled with disgusting yellow waste.
  • Ossuary is practically a landscape of burnt corpses, filling the entirety of background with dead bodies. Notes found by guards state that these often arise and even grab a weapon.
