Nightmare Fuel / Captain America: Civil War

Go To

  • The entire film as a whole explores the conflict of the heroes after a political dispute regarding the Sokovia Accords after a mission goes wrong and kills numerous civilians in an explosion.
  • The techniques HYDRA used to brainwash Bucky are torturous. Even without the equipment from the beginning of the film, when Zemo reactivates Bucky's programming, it looks like it's causing him a nightmare of pain.
  • Crossbones's deformed face is pretty unnerving. Then he detonates himself in an attempt to kill Cap, and thanks to Wanda containing the blast, he dies a slow and painful death as he's basically burned alive.
  • If you're not familiar with him from the comics, Black Panther's first scene can be this, as he shows up out of nowhere in a sinister-looking costume and immediately tries to kill Bucky without a word, and until the end of the scene the audience has no idea who this is.
  • Rhodes being blasted by mistake during the airport battle, then plummeting hundreds of feet in an out-of-control suit, before slamming into the ground hard. In the few moments before Tony confirms a heartbeat, it actually appears that he's been killed.
  • The video footage of Bucky killing Tony's parents, as he graphically beats Howard to death with his metal arm, then coldly places his body back in the car and strangles Maria with a blank expression. The music that plays in that scene also sounds like something out of a horror film.
  • The heroes' discovery that Zemo simply executed the other Winter Soldiers in their sleep. The sound of their heart monitors makes it creepier, and even Bucky seems unnerved by how coldly they were killed despite them being loyal HYDRA agents.
  • The final battle between Iron Man and Captain America can be said to be this.
    • As soon as Iron Man learns of Bucky's involvement in the death of his parents, the first thing that he does to Bucky and Steve is to ATTACK them. He's in Tranquil Fury mode throughout the fight, making no quips like he normally does and is only focused on killing Bucky.
    • The scene also makes it clear how intimidating Iron Man can be from an enemy's perspective, particularly as the fight takes place in a dark, confined space, which makes his suit look even more menacing than usual.
    • Worse, as Tony Stark blows up Bucky's prosthetic arm, this drove Steve into such anger that had he not restrained himself, he would have ended up killing Tony. The same goes for Tony, as when he decides he's had enough he throws Steve aside and gives him a final chance to stand down, and when Steve refuses, Tony simply powers up a repulsor blast, seemingly about to kill him before Bucky intervenes.
