Mythology Gag / Smash Remix

Go To

Smash Remix, being a fan project made much later than the original, has plenty of hindsight and room to sneak in references to character origins.

Trailers

  • After introducing the new character, the trailers would show off some more features added, but each one gone through much like menus from their home series.
    • 0.9.2: Wario's Debut uses the main menu of Mario Party 2.
    • 0.9.3: Lucas' trailer uses the item menu of Mother 3.
    • 0.9.4: Bowser's Trailer brings about the Bowser Event Roulette from Mario Party 3.
    • 0.9.7: Wolf brought with him the menu of Star Fox 64.
    • 1.0.0: With Mewtwo as the opening reveal, the trailer is set up like Professor Oak's lab and level select from Pokémon Snap.
    • 1.1.0: The CSS of Sonic Adventure is used as the menu for Sonic's Trailer.
    • 1.2.0: Each segment of Sheik's Trailer is introduced via a The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time save file.
    • 1.3.0: The Level Select Screen of Mischief Makers is used for Marina's Trailer.
    • 1.4.0: Goemon's Trailer is spread across the world map of Goemon's Great Adventure.
    • 1.5.0: Banjo and Kazooie's trailer is set across the save select screen from their titular title, complete with banter.
  • Sonic's reveal trailer is a big one, combining elements from his entrance in the Subspace Emissary and his Brawl reveal trailer. Also, when Classic Sonic is introduced, he strikes the same pose he did during the first trailer for Sonic Forces.
  • In the theater where the other Smashers watch the performance by the Mystical Ninjas, Captain Falcon can be seen drinking the ramen broth straight from the bowl, then giving a satisfied sigh much like what he did in Min Min's trailer for Ultimate.
  • Banjo and Kazooie's reveal has some of the other fighters join in to play the Banjo-Kazooie theme song. Young Link and Donkey Kong use instruments they've used in their canon games. Bowser and Samus reference their cameos in the NES version of Tetris by playing the accordion and a bow string instrument respectively. Conker even has a context-sensitive lightbulb come on before he pulls out the xylophone that Mumbo Jumbo used to play.
  • During the rundown of the 1.5.0 trailer, Kazooie hopes that Kirby doesn't pull out a rabbit with dirty laundry from his magic hat, based on one of the missions in Tooie where Banjo and Kazooie have to wash laundry from some rabbit workers.
  • The 1.5.0 update's trailer has a remix of "Happy Together" by The Turtles, the same song used in the original game's American commercial.
  • Dragon King's reveal trailer has a Freeze-Frame Bonus message calling him "FIGHTER 0" in the font that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and its promotional material uses to number its 86 fighters.

In-game

  • When Kirby copies Marina's ability, the throws he can perform resemble his Suplex copy ability from Kirby Super Star.
  • Slippy's character select pose is based on one of his official renders for Star Fox 64.
  • Peppy and Slippy's shared congratulations screen has the two posed in reference to the box art of Star Fox Guard, but with Slippy playing the N64 and Peppy in place of Uncle Grippy.
  • Banjo and Kazooie's character bio is written in rhymes, much like how their nemesis Gruntilda talks.
  • Should the stage 4 team be against the Rare Pair of Conker and Banjo & Kazooie, they reference their Diddy Kong Racing debut by playing Wizpig's theme and occasionally being fought on Frosty Village.
  • Mad Piano was moved to Kirby's boss slot because of Mad Piano's cameo in Kirby: Triple Deluxe.
  • One of Dedede's victory animations unique to this mod has him chowing down on some Cartoon Meat, based on his animation during Goal Game of Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards.
  • Wario's Battle Intro has him crash his Bulldog plane onto the battlefield, based on the intro to Wario Land 3.
  • Everything about Dragon King was determined from the Masahiro Sakurai on Creating Games episode detailing the original Super Smash Bros.'s development and showing the prototype for the first time. Several animations, including his special moves, were taken from the design document on special move possibilities shared in the same video.
  • The character bios for anachronistic characters play with their debut game listing. Lucas is treated as if Remix was developed in a invokedWhat Could Have Been timeline by listing his debut game as "Earthbound 64 (64DD)", while Dark Samus is treated as an Early-Bird Cameo, listing her debut as "Future Release" — the same origin that Melee gave to Animal Crossing (2001) and Cubivore trophies.
  • One of Kirby's hat options in the CSS panel is "???". This turns out to be the Magic ability from Kirby & the Amazing Mirror, which randomly uses any other Kirby hat attack.
  • The background in the redesigned Battlefield is based on the sunflower field in the game's American commercial.
  • One of Lucas' alternate costumes (white t-shirt, green shorts, and red sneakers) is based on his appearance from when Mother 3 was in development for the Nintendo 64DD.
  • Conker's pink costume is based on his girlfriend Berri and his green based on his wartime buddy Rodent.
  • Sonic's costumes now fully change his quill colors rather than having different shades of blue on his quills. His modern costumes are now based on Vector, Tails, Knuckles, Espio (using his green shoes from his Knuckles Chaotix design) and Shadow. His classic costumes are based on Ray, Bean, and the classic designs of Tails, Knuckles, and Amy.
  • Goemon's alternate costumes has him share the colors of not only Ebisumaru, but his other friends Yae and Sasuke.
  • One of Ebisumaru's alternate costumes has him strip down to a loincloth, a reference to him trying to appeal with an off-screen "hypnotic dance" he did in the beginning of Mystical Ninja: Starring Goemon.
  • The palettes for Metal Mario (and Metal Luigi) have a blue palette based on an alternate skin in Mario Golf 64, a gold palette that could reference the Gold form from New Super Mario Bros. 2, and a "Pink Gold" palette that's based on Pink Gold Peach from Mario Kart 8.
