Mythology Gag / Abraxas (Hrodvitnon)

Go To

  • There are a lot of references to Canon All There in the Manual information including Outpost 32's history, Vivienne's Backstory, the King of the Monsters movie novelization's extra material, and the events of the Godzilla: Aftershock comic; in addition to some of the movie end credits' Easter Eggs.
  • MaNi/Elder Brother's likeness possesses two Mythology Gags in one: he has a certain resemblance to the Showa and Heisei versions of King Ghidorah, and the narrative heavily implies his body assimilated said trait In-Universe from a creature that was featured in Godzilla vs. Kong. MaNi even uses a similar killing method to said creature in Chapter 17.
  • San's head almost being Swallowed Whole by MaNi/Elder Brother and being violently torn back out of MaNi's gullet. Bring Kong: Skull Island to mind for anyone?
  • The author drew inspiration from the Shin incarnation of Godzilla for Monster X, and it comes across. Driving it further home is that she's named each of Monster X's Metamorphosis Monster forms after Shin Godzilla's respective forms. Even Vivienne's fate forming half of Monster X seems like a reference to the Shin Godzilla theories that the disappeared and presumed-dead scientist has actually been fused into the monster.
  • Chapter 2 features a reference to a Deleted Scene from the 2014 film which was in the novelization.
  • Ghidorah's influence indirectly making people turn into fanatics devoted to aiding its Omnicidal Maniac quest and being its pawns also happened to the Exif in the AniGoji continuity. What makes it more appropriate is that Jonah and his paramilitary in King of the Monsters were themselves an Adaptational Mundanity rehash of the Xiliens and other Human Aliens in old Toho movies whom the Exif were themselves an adaptation of.
  • In Chapter 5, Tejada mispronounces Ghidorah's name as "Ghidra" before being corrected, referencing real-life long-standing debate about the correct pronunciation of the name.
  • The name of one of Ilene's daughters references the Chen twins' actress, Zhang Ziyi.
  • The human crew of a secluded base who are studying a monster begin acting increasingly erratic due to an alien intelligence's mental influence, and a military team come to investigate. Hmmm... Of course, true to Ghidorah's Adaptational Badassery, it's Ghidorah (or at least its leftover head) causing this.
  • "Mosura ya, Mosura..."
  • There's a recurring Gag towards Godzilla vs. Biollante as of Chapter 8.
  • Tejada makes a reference to one of the abilities of the original Toho Monster X which this incarnation doesn't display until much later in the story.
  • Chapter 8 also makes a reference to characters from Ebirah, Horror of the Deep.
  • Word of God confirms that Vivienne's cranial horn in her and San's second form, besides tying into their later Iconic Attribute Adoption Moment, was intended as a reference to the sole heroic iteration of King Ghidorah featured in Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack!.
  • Whereas Godzilla: King of the Monsters reveals nothing of Ghidorah's past before it came to Earth, and Dr. Stanton's theory that Ghidorah's goal is xenoforming Earth implies that Ghidorah is probably stranded on our planet and might have come here by accident; this story harkens back to the original portrayal in Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster by explicitly confirming that Ghidorah is a serial Planet Destroyer which has laid waste to numerous worlds and then abandoned them to look for its next conquest before it got stuck on conquering our world.
  • Mothra in her larval form at one point has to break up a fight between two Hot-Blooded and good-aligned Titans using her silk attack, just like in Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster.
  • Mothra's comment that Rodan has raised a Titan outside of his species at least once before seems like a reference to Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II.
  • Chapter 10 contains a Mythology Gag towards the Dorats in Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, and towards the Human Aliens such as the Xiliens in multiple Toho movies, but with a bit of reinvention.
  • No prizes for guessing where the Gag with a certain Intrepid Reporter is...
  • Chapter 11 contains two references in on:e to a director who worked on several of the old Toho movies, and to one of the cast of Godzilla vs. Hedorah.
  • Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack! also explored the idea of The Assimilator as an undead antagonist made up of tortured formerly-human consciousnesses, although the Many are more Eldritch Abomination than ghostly.
  • Look closely and you'll catch a hint that King Caesar exists or once existed in this story's universe, in Chapter 12.
  • Chapter 12 also has a Gag to Mechagodzilla's role in Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II. Creepily enough, that chapter was released five months before the January Godzilla vs. Kong new trailer caused Mechagodzilla theories about the film (which were eventually confirmed upon the film's release) to skyrocket.
  • A couple Red Barons in this story that weren't mentioned in MonsterVerse canon reference Godzilla: The Planet Eater.
  • There are several references to Atragon in relation to Manda, in Chapter 13.
  • The Godzilla franchise is not a stranger to featuring a Ridiculously Cute Baby Kaiju, nor to it being raised by a human (or rather a former-human in Vivienne's case).
  • MaNi/Elder Brother, with both his hybridization origin and his interactions with Monster X, has quite a bit in common with the title villain of Godzilla Vs Spacegodzilla.
  • In Chapter 17, a line of dialogue directed at Thor as a taunt by Ichi/Eldest Brother references a line by Joshua Graham in Fallout: New Vegas.
  • In Chapter 17, Monster X at one point tauntingly sings the lyrics of "Don't Fear the Reaper" by Blue Öyster Cult – yes, that band.
  • This isn't the first time Mothra's bioluminescence has cycled through three colors in a distinct order – it also happened in Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S..
  • The Final Battle has a dramatic Gag to Destroy All Monsters – if you've seen the film, then you'll probably recognize the gag.
  • How each of Keizer Ghidorah's three heads are taken down before being killed directly references the original incarnation in Godzilla: Final Wars.
  • Keizer Ghidorah's death is similar to that of the Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack! version of the character: both are finished off by a spiral-wreathed Breath Weapon attack from Godzilla. Interestingly, San-Who-Could-Have-Been/Youngest Brother pulling a Redemption Equals Death against the rest of Ghidorah during this event also seems to reference how the GMK movie's portrayal of King Ghidorah was the first and so far remains the only heroic iteration.
  • Chapter 17 also features a pretty big shout-out by Monster X to Mechagodzilla in Godzilla vs. Kong.
  • At one point, there's a special move that references Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah.
  • In the final chapter, there's a reference to an ancient encounter with a Titan heavily implied to be Snow Godzilla.
  • Like Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack!, this story also sees the military paying respects to the valiance of a heroic kaiju who died helping to save the world from the Big Bad.
  • Kiryu being created by humanoid villains (actual humans rather than Human Aliens here) under the public guise of being meant to act as an entirely heroic defence whilst the villains secretly plan to use it for evil is similar to Mechagodzilla's role in Godzilla: Rulers of Earth.
  • The Godzilla clone's Ladon nickname is a reference to Rodan, as the latter's name in Japanese is equivalent to this. It might also double as a reference to how Ladon's counterpart in the Toho movies was reared by Rodan.
  • Ren reprogramming Kiryu MK I to serve more heroic motives is similar to Rob's interactions with the Humongous Mecha Red Ronin in the Godzilla: King of the Monsters 1977 comic book.
  • Mechagodzilla, or something connected to it, communicating by causing text to appear on monitors is the same way Kiryu communicates at the end of Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S..
  • Speaking of Ladon, the author said that his appearance will be based on that of the Godzilla Minus One version of Godzilla, in reference to Ladon having a more volatile temperament than the MonsterVerse/AbraxasVerse main Godzilla.

  • Chapter 11 features a verbal reference to the author's early MonsterVerse fanfiction, Hold Me Close, See Me Through.
  • There's a notable reference to events which were depicted in another MonsterVerse fanfiction by the author, Cocytus. Assuming that a certain specter in Cocytus was indeed Mundane rather than Magic, it might take place in the same continuity as Abraxasthe author herself has entertained this.
