Discography:

  • The Lumineers (2012)
  • Cleopatra (2016)
  • III (2019)
  • Brightside (2022)

Tropes:

  • Alliterative Name: Ho Hey.
  • Callback: "Life in the City" repeats a verse from "Sleep on the Floor."
And if the sun don't shine on me today
And if the subways flood and bridges break
Will you just lay down and dig your grave?
Or will you rail against your dying day?
  • Childhood Friend Romance: "Flowers In Your Hair" is about someone growing up with a friend and falling in love with her.
  • Downer Ending: The Ballad of Cleopatra ends with Cleopatra, old and in hospice, stepping out into the dark void after being implied to have passed, having lost out on so many happy opportunities in life and with her family.
  • Lyrical Dissonance: "Gloria" is an upbeat and frantic song discussing alcoholism slowly destroying the life of the titular character, until she suffers a near-death experience.
  • New Sound Album: "III" and "Brightside" is notably less folk-sounding than the first two albums.
  • One-Man Song: "Gloria", "Cleopatra".
  • Real Life Writes the Plot:
    • "WHERE WE ARE" was based on an incident where Wesley Schultz and his wife survived a car accident and how the people nearby were crying over how they thought they died.
    • "Cleopatra" is based off a story Schultz heard from a cab driver about her life and her boyfriend walking out on her.
  • Silly Love Songs: "Ho Hey".
I belong with you, you belong with me, you're my sweetheart.
  • The One That Got Away: Cleopatra's original boyfriend, whom she imagines a happy life of travel and love that she could have had in "Sleep on the Floor."
