"The only game you know is do or die."

Super Fly, released in 1972, is one of the most famous Blaxploitation films ever made. The soundtrack, composed and performed by Curtis Mayfield, is a major factor. Released concurrently with the film through Curtom Records in the US and Buddah Records abroad, it spawned two hits with "Freddie's Dead" and "Superfly." Mayfield's soundtrack, however, stands as an important work of art apart from the movie and one of the greatest albums of his career.

When he saw the film, Mayfield remarked that it "looked like a cocaine commercial." By contrast, the soundtrack to the movie counters this imagery with songs about urban hardship and the drug trade.

Mayfield would go on to do soundtracks to Claudine, Sparkle, Let's Do It Again, and Short Eyes, but Super Fly remains his best-known.

I'm your troperman:

  • Drugs Are Bad: The running theme of the soundtrack is how the drug pushing had created problems in African-American communities. "Little Child Running Wild," "Freddie’s Dead," "Pusherman," and "No Thing On Me" especially have that theme.
  • Intercourse with You: "Give Me Your Love". Aside from the chorus, the verses say about as much.
    I want you so baby
Can't even get mad at you
    What a thing
    You really swing
And I feel so good it's true

  • Title-Only Chorus: "Give Me Your Love" involves the title being repeated multiple times.
