"I think a responsibility comes with notoriety, but I never think of it as power. It's more like something you hold, like grains of sand. If you keep your hand closed, you can have it and possess it, but if you open your fingers in any way, you can lose it just as quickly."
You took a mystery, and made me want it
You got a pedestal and put me on it
You made me love you out of feeling nothing;
Something that you do.
— "Chain Reaction"

Diana Ross (born March 26, 1944 in Detroit, Michigan) is a prolific American singer and actress. She was a member of highly influential The Supremes before embarking on a successful solo career in music and film.

Her solo career started in earnest in 1970 with her self-titled debut album featuring such hits as "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and "Reach Out and Touch (Somebody's Hand)." Two years later, she made her film debut in Lady Sings The Blues, a bio film about Billie Holiday. From that point, she remained a fixture in the entertainment world, especially throughout The '70s and The '80s, scoring number one hits and acting in several projects. She is also a gay icon, known for her LGBT advocacy and dance music aimed towards the gay community, especially as her song "I'm Coming Out" became an unofficial gay anthem.

Ross is also credited for discovering The Jackson 5 along with Michael Jackson, and she and Michael remained friends until his death, so much so that he named her the secondary guardian of his children, after his mother.

Ross is mother of actress Tracee Ellis Ross, and mother-in-law to singer/actress Ashlee Simpson.

It's My Tropes, and They Live Here

  • Audience Participation Song: "Reach Out and Touch (Somebody's Hand)." She even said it herself here in 1979.
  • Award-Bait Song: "If We Hold On Together", from The Land Before Time.
  • Captain Obvious: The chorus of "It's My House" is unintentionally this. It simply goes, "It's my house, and I live here."
  • Coming-Out Story: While "I'm Coming Out" is not one for Diana herself, it has been widely adopted by the LGBT community as a staple of pride celebrations. She proudly embraced this fact as a long time ardent supporter of the queer community.
  • Cover Version: "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", which was originally recorded by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. The cover version completely re-arranges the song.
  • Disco: One of the most well known Disco Divas.
  • The Diva: Not only is she a Disco diva, but a general Pop/Soul/R&B diva as well.
  • Epic Rocking: "Love Hangover" is 7 minutes and 48 seconds, there's only about 3 to 4 lyrics before it goes into an extended dance beat.
  • Let's Duet: "Endless Love" with Lionel Richie.
  • Love Is a Drug: The subject about the appropriately named song "Love Hangover".
  • Platonic Life-Partners: With Michael Jackson. They remained close from the moment she discovered him and The Jackson Five to the end of his life.
