With the release of a genuine Mario movie being spearheaded by Nintendo themselves, it was only a matter of time before the mere existence of it was memed on.

- The meme. [[labelnote:Explanation]]The explanation behind the meme, if necessary.[[/labelnote]] ExplanationLike this.
- Further mutations and successor memes, if any.
Examples:
- Fake Super Mario film casting choicesExplanationIn the 9/23/2021 Nintendo Direct, some of the voice actors for the animated Super Mario film were revealed, and many found them hilariously ridiculous, such as Chris Pratt as Mario and Jack Black as Bowser. In response to the VA reveals, many people began making fake cast member reveals that were even more ridiculous, like Ben Shapiro as Mario◊, LowTierGod as Yoshi◊, and Eric André as Geno.
- "First, of course, is [X character] who will be played by [X actor]."ExplanationThe meme then extended to other pieces of media, with many creating the most ridiculous fancastings imaginable.
- As soon as it was confirmed that Jack Black, a walking, breathing Fountain of Memes, was voicing Bowser, the memes of this series and Jack's own memes began seeing mashups, such as dubbing his swearing rant from "Inward Singing" over various scenes starring Bowser, drawing Bowser finding an octagon, playing Bowser's battle theme from Super Mario 64 on a plastic saxophone, Bowser parodying scenes from movies Jack Black was in and more.
- Jurassic World MarioExplanationThe confirmation that Chris Pratt would be voicing Mario inspired a number of jokes and fanart about Mario-themed parodies of Jurassic World, thanks to Pratt starring in that movie and thanks to both IPs prominently featuring dinosaur characters. Universal also distributed both movies.
- It's Always Sunny in the Mushroom KingdomExplanationSimilarly to Jack Black and Chris Pratt, the reveal that Charlie Day would be voicing Luigi led to many fans jokingly depicting the green-clad plumber as Charlie Kelly (who Day plays) from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, typically showing Luigi acting out Kelly's own oft-memed moments (e.g. the Pepe Silvia rant). Similar jokes emerged depicting other Mario characters filling in for the rest of the show's cast, e.g. Wario as Frank Reynolds.
- "He's so cool!"ExplanationWhen Miyamoto announced that Chris Pratt is playing Mario, he (or at least the translator) comments that the actor is "so cool" (which is a rough translation of the original phrase Miyamoto used, "かっこいい です" (kakkoii desu)). The line has been echoed by many bewildered fans, usually mockingly, in response to the casting.
- Stoner KongExplanationAs another example related to the casting choices, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong led to jokes about DK being The Stoner or having Rogen's trademark laugh. And then a commercial dropped which confirms that yes, DK does have Seth Rogen's laugh.
- The Mario movie trailer greentextExplanationPrior to the September 2021 Nintendo Direct, a 4chan user made a transcript◊ to a fake trailer for the film, parodying every single animated family film cliché common in The New '10s. As more information about Illumination's Mario movie came out, the greentext was increasingly spread online in response, leading to people joking about how eerily prescient it seemed.
- WAKE UP IN THE MORNING FEELIN' LIKE P. DIDDYExplanationThe opening lyrics to "TiK ToK" from Kesha, taken from the greentext. In spite of the absence of the song in any of the trailers shown, it is associated with the movie, with the lyrics being used in jokes.
- For some reason, people have made jokes that the actors would "research" their roles with content that isn't an official Mario game (such as SuperMarioLogan, the "Super Mario Rescues the Princess" segment from Seth MacFarlane's Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy, or the Super Mario World cartoon).
- Starring Chris Pratt as the voice of everyoneExplanationFollowing the reactions to Chris Pratt being cast as Mario and then being confirmed as the voice actor for Garfield in his own upcoming movie, it became common to depict fake castings of the actor as the voice of every character under the Sun, such as Jolyne Cujoh, the live-action Tony Tony Chopper, or even Peter Griffin.
- People making fan posters of the movie long before its release has become a meme by itself.
- "This is Miyamoto."ExplanationOn April 25, 2022, Shigeru Miyamoto announced that the movie would be delayed to Spring 2023 through the official Nintendo of America Twitter account (the tweet is a translation of the original tweet from Nintendo of Japan), who made it clear that it was him by starting with "This is Miyamoto." It turns into a meme through surrealness of Miyamoto announcing himself on Nintendo's Twitter like John Conner to the Resistance.
- A delayed movie is eventually good...ExplanationA snowclone of the ever-famous quote that is (wrongly, according to this) attributed to Miyamoto.
- Chris-SanExplanation Miyamoto mentions someone named "Chris-San" in the tweet. While he obviously meant Chris Meledandri, the CEO of Illumination, fans have joked that he meant Chris Pratt instead. Some have even misread it as Chris-Chan as well. Then, in the October 6 Direct, Miyamoto actually does refer to Pratt as "Chris-San".
- Mario's assExplanationUpon the release of the official teaser poster, which depicts a view of Mario from behind, people were quick to point out how small and tight Mario's glutes were compared to game renders. Comparisons to Hank Hill's memetically small buttocks were made shortly after the poster's release, as well as other infamous Nintendo booty nerfs. French Wikipedia even listed this under the film's section about controversies.
- After the teaser dropped, there were many jokes about the penguin king being Pablo.
- The French Mario voice is betterExplanationFans have noticed that Mario's voice in the French trailers, provided by Pierre Tessier, sounds noticeably more like his game counterpart's voice in huge comparison to Pratt's different, lower voice in the English version. Some have declared their intent to watch the film in French or even learn French just for Mario's more energetic voice.
- Mario sounding better in [X]ExplanationA common perception of the trailers is that Mario sounds better in different languages, with many of the non-English VAs being perceived to be doing a better job than Chris Pratt, including the aforementioned French VA.
- U R MR BIExplanationAs with its above "U R MR GAY" sister meme from Super Mario Galaxy, viewers noticed that the logo highlighted similar corresponding letters to spell out a similar message. (In a fake version of the logo, anyway.)
- Mario is voiced by Linda BelcherExplanationA lot of fans pointed out Pratt's reading of "Mushroom Kingdom, here we come!" in the trailer sounds eerily similar to Linda Belcher from Bob's Burgers.
- "Do you yield?"ExplanationThe scene of the penguins fighting back against Bowser's army is made into meme formats that make fun of people who make virtually no effort to stop something from happening, a common target being schools trying to stop bullies. It's also used in scenarios that depict people trying to stop something unstoppable. There are also some edits where Bowser does yield and leaves.
- "FUCK YOU!"ExplanationEdits of the trailer have Bowser saying this from Tenacious D's "Inward Singing", which Jack Black is a part of. It's usually after the penguin king's "Do you yield" line.
- "GAY!"ExplanationFans have snipped Bowser's "Open the gates!" line to make him say this, in a similar fashion to "So long Gay Bowser!".
- Morpho Knight ConfirmedExplanation (SPOILERS)During the scene in the teaser that introduces us to Mario, several butterflies are seen flying around as Mario falls to the ground. In Kirby Star Allies and Kirby and the Forgotten Land, a particular butterfly that's been seen flying around the introduction cutscenes of many Kirby games touches Galacta Knight and Fecto Forgo respectively and swallows their essence. Kirby fans have joked that Morpho Knight essentially made a cameo appearance in that film.
- "Growing up... man, I spent hours of my life stomping...... KOOPAS."ExplanationChris Pratt's description of his childhood memories of Mario Bros. drew attention for its stilted delivery and its noticeable inaccuracy because the turtle enemies in that game are Shellcreepers, not Koopas, and can't be stomped on there. As a result, the line became a popular exploitable, with internet users rewriting it to feature similar comedically obvious inaccuracies about other works. The meme even caused some people to question whether Pratt were as genuinely excited about portraying Mario as he had claimed.
- This is Mario/It's-a me, Thancred! ExplanationMario's French voice actor, whom fans have praised for sounding closer to Charles Martinet's Mario from the games than Chris Pratt's performance, is Pierre Tessier, who provides the French voice of Thancred Waters of Final Fantasy XIV. Once the fans found this out, they started combining Mario's catchphrase with the memetic "This is Thancred" meme from the Endwalker expansion.
- The Hotel Mario Movie ExplanationMario's introduction in the trailer is suspiciously similar to a cutscene in Hotel Mario in which he gets dumped out of a pipe in almost the same fashion, followed by him questioning where he is. Needless to say, the fandom latched onto this immediately.
- STR Games did an edit of the teaser trailer with "Generic Hollywood Editing" such as a rapid-fire Fade to Black for many shots.
- "I finally found it...NOW WHO'S GONNA STOP MEEEEEEE!?!?"ExplanationIn the trailer, Bowser's question is followed by an Answer Cut with Mario showing up. Naturally, fans have replaced the second part with many clips featuring other characters or people (most notably Elmo from a sketch about stop signs that Jack Black did).
- Mario's heart attackExplanationAfter Mario falls into the Mushroom Kingdom, he gets to his feet while clutching his chest. The shot has since been played in reverse by fans to make it look like Mario is collapsing from heart problems or chest pains.
- MariocarditisExplanationA punny synonym for myocarditis used with the above shot that makes it look like Mario is suffering from heart problems.
- You just got Luigi'd!ExplanationBefore the release of the second trailer, some 4chan users leaked many character posters of the movie, with Luigi's including this phrase. Due to the Bait-and-Switch nature of the phrase, many people started using it as such. In a later trailer, he ends up actually saying it in the film.
- "My favourite part was when he said 'You just got Luigi'd' and luigi'd all over those guys"ExplanationFans brought back this popular Snowclone from Morbius (2022) after seeing the scene where Luigi says said line against a Dry Bones.
- Mario is Light YagamiExplanationMario's Japanese dub voice actor for the film is none other than... Mamoru Miyano, whose best-known role is Light Yagami from Death Note. Miyano voicing Mario of all characters was such a bizarre choice that fans had a field day with this.
- "Bowser is coming."ExplanationAs the second trailer is released, Peach is found saying this line to her kingdom as a warning. The internet had a collective Double Take due to the word sounding like something else.
- Dragoon PeachExplanationPeach wielding a halberd in the second trailer led to a fair amount of jokes about her having the Dragoon class from the Final Fantasy series.
- Super Ultraman BrosExplanationIn the Japanese dub, Mario and Luigi are voiced by Mamoru Miyano and Tasuku Hatanaka, while Toad is voiced by Tomokazu Seki; who themselves voice Ultraman Zero, Ultraman Z and GlenFire (one of Zero's allies), respectively. Since Zero and Z are master and apprentice, it led to many jokes about Zero and Z being the Mario Brothers.
- She Can Do AnythingExplanationThis tagline from Peach's promotional poster, which is meant to emphasize her Xenafication in the film, has been jokingly taken by fans to turn Peach into a Memetic Badass who's capable of literally doing anything, including godlike feats. It's also led to some fans turning Peach into Jevil, due to his Badass Boast of, "I can do anything!"
- "That's not the voice."ExplanationShortly after the casting announcement, Chris Pratt recorded a video on his Instagram talking about his excitement about playing Mario. It culminates with him flatly saying, "It's-a me, a-Mario," before clarifying that it's not the actual voice he used for Mario. As more and more trailers were released, Mario's voice in the film has sounded almost exactly like the way Pratt said it in the video, leading some fans to call him a Lying Creator and making memes out of the initial video, typically done in the Sanctuary Guardian meme format from EarthBound.
- The next "Ugly Sonic"ExplanationFollowing the first trailer, many people compared Chris Pratt's voice as Mario to the original design of Sonic from his own movie, with many petitions and calls online to have him recasted from the role, due to how the same thing has happened with the Sonic movie design, which was met with a similar reception and was successful enough to have him redesigned into something more faithful, that many hoped that the same thing would happen with Mario here. However, Mario's voice was met with mixed reactions, and not the near-universal negative response the old Sonic movie design had. Also since the old Sonic movie design appeared in Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers (2022), many joked that if Pratt was recast, he would have to appear in that film's hypothetical sequel with the same Self-Deprecation that Ugly Sonic had.
- Luigi's scream.ExplanationBowser interrogates Luigi telling him that he saw a man with a moustache, overalls, and a hat with a letter of his first name on it. Luigi denies it, so Bowser rips out a chunk of his moustache, causing Luigi to scream in pain. This lead to fans replacing his scream with something else, such as his scream from the Super Mario World cartoon.
- "You got the Cat Box!"ExplanationDonkey Kong's first words heard by the public are him laughing over Mario getting a Super Bell, before getting back up to punch him. His reaction, along with Mario's annoyed Death Glare, drew plenty of comparisons◊ to "The Dud" from The Simpsons.
- "Now you die."/Donkey Kong punches the screenExplanationAfter Donkey Kong utters the aforementioned line, he throws a punch into the screen. This moment is usually edited to have him punch something or someone else for comedic effect.
- Blue Shell Origin StoryExplanation (SPOILERS)The official poster, unveiled in February 2023, features a supporting character that hadn't been seen or mentioned until then: a Koopa Paratroopa that sports a blue shell with spikes. Since there will be a sequence paying homage to Mario Kart, it didn't take long for fans to speculate that he'll represent its most notorious item, which turned out to be exactly the case.
- How The Super Mario Bros. Movie should beginExplanationAfter the Mario Brothers' plumbing commercial came out, there have been edits on YouTube splicing it to come right after Bowser's "NOW WHO'S GONNA STOP ME?!!" clip. Upon the movie's full release, this is exactly how the scenes play out
- We'll see the whole movie at this rate!ExplanationFans have joked that with the amount of leaked content being put on YouTube, with so far 12 mins of movie footage being spoiled (as of 18/03/2023), by the time the movie is officially released, everyone will have already seen it via the leaked clips.
- "There's no escape. The only hope is the sweet relief of death."ExplanationOn the final trailer, one of Bowser's prisoners is a blue Luma with a... twisted sense of humor. This caused Lumalee to get something of a fan following, spawning fan◊ art◊ and other tributes that exhibit the character's personality. The quote is often used when in a laborous situation that you just want to end.
- Mad Mario: Rainbow RoadExplanationThe Mario Kart segment has been compared a lot to Mad Max: Fury Road. Especially after the final trailer was released, and it showed off more of the Rainbow Road battle.
- Dollar SignsExplanationThe Super Bowl ad for Super Mario Bros. Plumbing hawks the service's affordability with a shot of Mario and Luigi with faux-surprised looks while surrounded by digitally-inserted dollar signs. Many people immediately guessed that the shot would be a perfect thumbnail picture for articles and videos about the movie's box-office intake.
- Peach is ElsaExplanation (SPOILERS)During the film's climax, Peach has an Ice Flower stashed in her wedding bouquet and uses it to fight back against Bowser. The ice powers, combined with the blue hue given to Peach's wedding dress upon transforming, have caused fans to draw plenty of comparisons to Queen Elsa from Frozen, or play "Let It Go" during said scene of Peach.
- PeachesExplanationBowser's hammy and over-the-top love song where the chorus mostly comprises of the word "Peaches". It quickly became the film's most popular song and spawned many remixes, parodies, and general memes utilizing the song.
- BitchesExplanationA sub-meme where the word "Peaches" is misheard as "Bitches", especially when Bowser is practically screaming the word at the end of the song.
- ChinchesExplanationSimilar to the above, except used in the Latin American fandom. The word means "bedbugs" in Mexican Spanish, and it was coined as a result of the France's bedbug plague. Then, Hector Estrada, Bowser's voice actor in the Latin American Spanish dub, sang his own version of the song.
- "Peach..."ExplanationAt the beginning of the music video/soundtrack version of the song, Jack Black sings the word as he tosses an actual peach at the screen. This clip has been subject to multiple edits where he tosses something else at the screen.
- "NO PEACHES?"ExplanationDue to the aforementioned "Peaches"/"Bitches" Mondegreen, Bowser has been drawn similarly to the "NO BITCHES" reaction image featuring Megamind.
- "Big gay"ExplanationIn Cantonese, Princess Peach's name is "bīk gēi" ((Jyutping: bik1 gei1; Chinese characters: 碧姬), which sounds almost identical to "big gay". Thus, videos of the Cantonese version of "Peaches" are pretty much guaranteed to have comments pointing this out or joking about it.
- It's become common for some YouTubers to put the 2023 movie in the thumbnail of a review video titled "Why the Mario Movie sucks", only to suddenly reveal that they're talking about the '93 film.
- MatPat's responseExplanationThe film puts emphasis on the strong brotherly love Mario and Luigi have for each other. With MatPat being infamous for giving Mario the Ron the Death Eater treatment, particularly his "Mario is a sociopath" video, and often making him out to be a Big Brother Bully to Luigi as an argument for that, it's become a running joke for fans to speculate what level of Insane Troll Logic he'd go to in order to apply said theory to this movie too.
- "And then there's Chunky! He's not dead."ExplanationChunky Kong makes a cameo appearance in the crowd cheering on DK during his and Mario's challenge. Chunky has become quite a meme due to the Brentalfloss parody of the DK Rap where all the Kongs are portrayed as being worse off years later, and then Chunky, who is...dead. Since Chunky appeared in the movie, many people were quick to say the opposite.
- "Rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated."ExplanationThis paraphrased quote attributed to Mark Twain has also been used when talking about Chunky's appearance in the movie.
- "Love really makes a guy come out of his shell."ExplanationTwice said by Bowser as a cheesy pick-up line to try and woo over Princess Peach. It humorously doesn't work. This line is often quoted when seeing the movie version of Bowser, especially screenshots or fanart of him in wedding attire.
- Peach's assExplanationA screenshot of Peach on her bike that has become memetic due to the way she sits emphasizing her rear end. One version references the infamous Axel in Harlem meme.
- "What if she says 'no'?" (dies)ExplanationA genuine question asked by a Koopa soldier concerning Bowser's insistence that Princess Peach will reciprocate [Bowser's] advances once she sees the Power Star he stole. Without hesitation, the concerned Koopa soldier subsequently gets burned alive onscreen by his king into a Dry Bones for daring to ask the obvious. This short scene became notorious for its great bit of Black Comedy in an otherwise (mostly) lighthearted film.
- "That's a great question. You're promoted!"ExplanationIn the games, Dry Bones are considered to be harder enemies to deal with than regular Koopa Troopa due to being able to reassemble themselves after being stomped on, possessing fire ball immunity and being incapable of being used against other enemies. Some fans jokingly state that Bowser respects the Koopa soldier's question and thus "promotes" him from a regular Koopa Troopa to a Dry Bones.
- "Did Nintendo hold them at gunpoint?"ExplanationDue to how different this film was from Illumination's usual movies, which have a reputation for being either obvious cash-grabs or incredibly shallow, as well as how protective Nintendo is known to be over their properties, fans began suspecting that Nintendo had the team at Illumination under their watchful eyes at all times to ensure that they didn't try any of their usual antics, like turning characters into Minion expies.
- "You really thought-?" "Kinda!"ExplanationThis exchange between Bowser and Peach has been turned into a meme template for all manner of things.
- "That's not a commercial, that is cinema!"ExplanationA line delivered by Luigi in the movie about the Mario Bros.' commercial. Used to counter claims by critics that the movie is just one giant commercial.
- The Mama Luigi MovieExplanation (SPOILERS)The second post-credits scene confirms Yoshi will be involved in the sequel and will most likely also be an origin story featuring him hatching from his egg. As such, many have joked that it will be an adaptation of the memetic episode or will at least reference it in some way.
- The start of the Nintendo (or Smash) cinematic universe''Explanation (SPOILERS) Especially during the final fight with Bowser, where an invincible Mario and Luigi thrash Bowser all up and down the Brooklyn street in the real world while moving, jumping, and attacking like they're in Smash Bros., especially when said footage is set to the "WOMBO COMBO" commentary track
- It's become popular to upload the entire film onto YouTube or Twitter for kicks, as if baiting the websites' respective copyright protection systems, with some creative individuals vocoding it to a song such as Gangsta's Paradise or MEGALOVANIA.
- Godzilla (1998) spoiled the ending.Explanation (SPOILERS)The end Sequel Hook between these two films where a baby Zilla/Yoshi hatches out of an egg are so similar to one another that people couldn't help but compare them.
- "I was in Yonkers trying to find the post office..."ExplanationA fake tweet attributed to Chris Pratt, where he rants about an Italian man in Yonkers, New York, vomiting on his shoes, culminating in using a racial slur for Italian people. It circulated widely after Pratt's casting was announced, often in the context of characters or people becoming involved in something they had previously expressed distaste for. Just to reinforce it, the tweet is not real — it's far more than 140 characters, which tweets were limited to at the time the post was allegedly made.
- "I think you're nuts."ExplanationReferencing a popular edit of the dinner scene in which stock images are superfluously edited into it, the most popular of which being Papa Mario's comment of "I think you're nuts" punctuated by a picture of assorted nuts. It got to the point where, on a Twitter account that transcribed the film's script, that line, which had been posted months ago at the time, got a resurgence in popularity, its comment section spammed with variations of said picture.
Bowser: Peach, you're so cool
And with my memes, we're gonna rule
Peach, understand
I'm gonna meme ya till the very end!
Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches
Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches
I'm meming you!! OH!
