Manga / Kokuhaku Game

Go To

Kokuhaku Game is a 4koma doujin manga created by an internet artist with the pen name Ryuugamine Ryuuto, in 2017. The story follows four characters, who happen to have some color into their names and the opposite color in their hair, while they try to achieve a fulfilling love life "to varying degrees of failure."

Kokuhaku Game is hosted on Webtoons, where it can be read for free. The manga is primarily done in Japanese, but the author himself (or herself, as Ryuuto seems to be an avatar for the author) translates the work to English. Currently, both versions are hosted on the same site, although the English version is proving to be more popular, most likely due to the accessibility of the English language to a broader audience and the fact Webtoon doesn't seem to have many works in Japanese.

Kokuhaku Game contains examples of:

  • A Dog Ate My Homework: Inverted. The dog attempts to do the homework!
  • All Is Well That Ends Well: The "attempted" ending of chapter 2. Comically averted in the actual ending.
  • All Love Is Unrequited: Aoyama's confession to her senpai didn't go very well, same for Akame's to Aoyama. Hakuya outright says this is what happened between herself and Kimidori.
    • Averted with senpai (a.k.a. "that guy") and his gigantic classmate.
  • Better as Friends: Kimidori and Hakuya seem to be this, though the other characters don't buy it.
  • Bilingual Backfire: Hakuya talks about Akame's large breasts to Kimidori in English. Turns out Akame understands English and answers in kindnote
  • Bilingual Bonus: Hakuya speaks in English with Kimidori. To her demise, Akame also speaks English.
  • Color-Coded Characters: Four of the six (eight, if you count the background Ho Yay couple) introduced so far have colors in their names and the opposing color for their hair:
    • Aoyama Ayako: The "Ao" in her name means blue and her hair color is red;
    • Himura Akame: "Aka" means red and her hair color is green;
    • Yukimura Hakuya: "Haku" means white and her hair is black;
    • Kobayashi Kimidori: The "Ki" in Kimidori means yellow, though "Midori" means green. Kimidori means "pea green." Kobayashi's hair is blonde, being the only of the four characters to not have an opposing hair color to his name, but he is also the only man in the main cast.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Chapter 2. Aoyama believes Akame's advances meant she should ask Kimidori out, and when she finally hears what Akame meant to say, she dismisses it as a joke.
  • Colorful Theme Naming: The title itself is a play on confession (kokuhaku) and a different reading of black (koku) and white (haku). Also, the four main characters, as listed above.
  • Comical Overreacting: The second chapter's depiction of the events that occurred in the first one, as well their little game of Smash on the third.
  • Competitive Multiplayer: The story of the third chapter starts off and finishes with a dramatic narration of how they're playing Smash Bros.
  • Fanservice: While the manga itself doesn't portray any sexual fanservice shots (the closest to it being a very shy panchira in the early chapters), the author has made some very serviceable shots for Akame and Hakuya.
  • I Don't Want to Ruin Our Friendship: Completely averted. The first thing Akame does after Aoyama gets heartbroken is confess to her friend.
  • Implied Love Interest: Akame towards Aoyama in the first chapter. Outright spoken in the second.
  • Interrupted Declaration of Love: Aoyama's confession to senpai/that guy in chapter one. Several times!
  • Love Confession: The whole premise of the manga. With games!
  • Love Makes You Crazy: Aoyama's gag transformation i Super Saiyan can be this, especially after everything she does to get her feelings across her senpai. Akame's reaction to said "enthusiasm" may be an indication of more than just that.
  • Oblivious to Love: Senpai to Aoyama. Aoyama to Akame.
  • Sex Comedy: Aoyama walks into one of those in the very first chapter.
  • Shout-Out: Kokuhaku Game makes use of its game motif to shout to other games, including a confession scene à lá Street Fighter, a game of Super Smash Bros. and a dog watching Little Witch Academia.
