Kamasutra is a 1990 four-volume manga written by Go Nagai and Kunio Nagatani, and drawn by Nagai. Very loosely based on the Kama Sutra, it is a mix of adventure, science fiction, and erotica.
When young Ryu Aikawa learns that his grandfather, a famed (but perverted) archaelogist, may have been kidnapped while in India, he soon finds himself caught up in an adventure involving an ancient cult, a lost princess, and an artifact called the Sex Grail.
The manga was adapted into an OVA called Kama Sutra: Ultimate Sex Adventure.
This manga contains examples of:
- Artistic License – History: The manga takes a number of liberties with the history of India, most notably with the Princess Surya; no such princess ever existed.
- Chaste Hero: At the start of the story, Ryu has taken a vow of chastity, as his grandfather promised to introduce him to "the most beautiful woman in the world", but said that Ryu must remain a virgin until then.
- Dies Differently In The Adaptation: In the manga, Price Rudra is pulled into the void of space by a Naga after failing a Secret Test of Character. In the OVA he transforms into a snake monster and is slain by Ryu.
- Dirty Old Man: Prof. Takeshi Aikawa openly admits that he's a pervert, and that his interest in the Kama Sutra is sexual.
- Non-Indicative Name: While Shakti is technically a native of India, having been born there, she has no actual Indian blood; she's English, and her real name is Irene Adolfo. She got her nickname from Prof. Aikawa because of her sexual prowess; he mistranslated "shakti" as "sexual potency".
- Plucky Comic Relief: This being a Go Nagai manga, naturally there is a comic-relief character, Here, it's Hiya "Indy" Yakko, Prof. Aikawa's diminutive assistant, who fancies himself an adventurer in the mold of Indiana Jones.
- You Need to Get Laid: While staying at Shakti's house, Ryu is deflowered by Shakti herself, who convinces him that if he really plans to become the husband of an immortal Indian princess like Surya, he should probably have some idea of how to treat her in bed first.
