From The Red Fog (Akai Kiri no Naka kara in Japanese) is a historical horror Seinen manga. Created by Mosae Nohara, the manga was distributed in G-Fantasy Magazine in 2020 and was discontinued after 25 chapters.
In Victorian England, 12 year old Rwanda Bailey has lived in the basement for all of his life, his friends only the corpses of those he kills. After his mother is murdered, Rwanda runs away to London, and after several incidents involving murdering a rapist and killing everyone in an orphanage, he is taken into a hitman agency by a mysterious man named Midwinter.
Rwanda's early targets include a couple, and he attempts to kill their daughter as well to hide the evidence. However, the daughter, Macalo, survives, and unaware of who the perpetrator was, begins a lifelong mission to find the murderer of her parents. Meanwhile, Rwanda starts to doubt the agency more and more, seeing them as a bunch of thugs.
Graphic and very much willing to stray into dark topics, the series includes a constant Trauma Conga Line for its protagonists and has seen many negative reviews for its constant reliance on gore and shock.
Tropes:
- Adults Are Useless: The majority of adults in the series pre-timeskip, except Will and later on Miranda, are abusive in some way, shape or form.
- The Alcoholic: Ivan.
- Archnemesis Dad: Midwinter, after the reveal that he is Rwanda's father.
- Dark and Troubled Past: Rwanda, who has experienced neglect, and physical and sexual abuse.
- Dirty Old Man: Rwanda’s rapist, who originally acts as a kind, helpful guardian before taking advantage of the boy. It gets worse when you realise he’s done this before, and that if Rwanda didn’t kill him, the man would have brought over his friends in future.
- Heroic Sacrifice: Miranda sacrificing herself to save Rwanda.
- Hooker with a Heart of Gold: Kathy. Unlike many other characters, Rwanda shows genuine sadness when she is murdered.
- How Dad Met Mom: Chapter 15, which shows a flashback of when Miranda meets Clive/Midwinter.
- It Runs in the Family: The Bailey family as a whole.
- Reports of My Death Were Greatly Exaggerated: Will.
- Tested on Humans: The fate of Leo and Andy.
- Time Skip: One features after Rwanda leaves the agency and shows how he is doing 6 years later.
- Trauma Button: When being strangled by someone else he was kidnapped with, Rwanda has flashbacks to his rape from Chapter 1. The flashback causes him to stab the man to death, and leaves him clearly terrified.
- Troubled Child: Rwanda, Macalo and Ivan.
- Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: Rwanda’s constant wanting for murder, Macalo killing animals and Ivan’s drinking.
- Why Couldn't You Save Them?: Rwanda towards the doctor after Miranda dies.
- Would Hurt a Child: Midwinter towards Rwanda as well as the human experiment.
