BakeGyamon is a Japanese manga and anime series, with its concept created by Kazuhiro Fujita, and the manga drawn by Mitsuhisa Tamura.

Sanshiro Tamon is a boy who lives on a very small island. He's a kid in need of adventure, something his home is too small to provide. That all changes, however, when a mysterious stranger named Fue comes to the island and invites him to play a game.

Before he knows it, Sanshiro finds himself whisked into a bizarre Alternate Universe to play BakeGyamon, which countless other kids have also come to do. The reason? The prize for the winner is to have their wish come true.

Not that that concerns Sanshiro too much. He's just excited to be in this bizarre world playing this game and meeting all these other kids.

The manga was serialized from March 15th, 2006 to April 4th, 2007 in Weekly Shonen Sunday. The anime from 2006 to 2007 for 51 episodes.

BakeGyamon contains examples of:

  • Hope Spot: At the start of the series, Sanshiro finds a tunnel that seems to go someplace new on the island. He takes it... and ends up falling back into the village.
  • Mon: All the contestants can collect creatures that they can summon to aid them in the game. Sanshiro's is a trio of living mud balls.
  • Nothing Exciting Ever Happens Here: Sanshiro has this opinion of his island home, given its small size.
  • One-Word Title: Naturally, the title of the series being "BakeGyamon".
  • Slave Liberation: Upon learning that the monsters used to play BakeGyamon are not doing so willingly, and since he still doesn't have a desire of his own to wish for, Sanshiro resolves to make a Selfless Wish when he wins and free them all.
