Two-Donor Clone

Pinky: I'm a mommy!
Brain: Pinky, that's absurd. You're nothing of the kind. Its chromosomal make-up just happens to include both of our genetic building blo... [Beat, followed by a horrified scream] Oh, my lord, you are its mommy.

At its most basic definition, a clone is a genetic duplicate of a living being. However, some works have clones whose genetic makeup is made up of two or more sources.

One possible reason is because the main source cannot be completely duplicated, maybe because it is too complicated or even damaged. Because of this, a secondary source may be needed to stabilize the clone.

Another possible reason is that the clone is birthed naturally via childbirth. If done this way, the clone can be retconned to not be a clone since they were birthed.

A Half-Human Hybrid is a possible outcome. Usually, these clones largely look like one set while having traits or even powers of the other set.

Can be a good source of Clone Angst. Clones may question whether or not they are one considering the circumstances of their creation.

Can be related to Artificial Family Member. If both donors are the same gender, it might be a form of Homosexual Reproduction. Compare Our Phlebotinum Child. Also Compare Clone by Conversion, in which an existing person is involved but is completely overwritten. Can overlap with Mix-and-Match Man.

    Anime & Manga
  • Neon Genesis Evangelion: Rei Ayanami is actually a clone of Yui Ikari, but she also has the DNA of the Angel Lilith. While she doesn't have Angel-like abilities, her being part Lilith does allow her to absorb Adam and become a godlike being.
  • Pokémon Adventures: Mewtwo, who is normally an extremely modified clone of Mew, is made from a combination of Mew's and Blaine's genetic material (since there wasn't enough of Mew's DNA to complete the process), which becomes a plot point when some of Mewtwo's cells make their way into Blaine's body, giving them a psychic link but also endangering Blaine's life.
  • In the manga version of Transformers 2010 (the Japanese version of the 3rd season of The Transformers), Rodimus Convoy agrees to face Galvatron in a one-on-one duel but instead finds himself confronted with Gilthor, the Great Gun Soldier. When Gilthor turns on Galvatron and forces the two leaders into an Enemy Mine, it's revealed that Gilthor was created by the Quintessons using the schematics of both Convoy/Optimus Prime and Megatron.

    Comic Books
  • Gold Digger: Brianna Diggers is a composite clone of both Gina and Britanny. She looks like Gina and also has her high intellect, but she also has the speed, strength, and regenerative ability granted by Britanny's were-cheetah gene.
  • Ms. Marvel (2014): The Inventor is an unintentional example. He was created by a scientist named Gregory Knox who wanted to clone Thomas Edison. Unfortunately, Edison's DNA sample was contaminated by Knox's pet bird, resulting in the creation of a creature who is part human and part bird.
  • Superboy (1994): Conner Kent is a clone of Superman created by Project Cadmus. However, because Kryptonian DNA is too complicated because of its alien sources, they added human DNA to stabilize him. At first his human half came from Paul Westfield, who was part of Cadmus, but the genetic source is later retconned to be Lex Luthor.
  • In Ultimate Spider-Man, Gwen Stacy is drained to death by the Carnage symbiote. Later on, a clone of Gwen appears but is also a clone of Carnage since the symbiote still had genetic material of Gwen when it was cloned.
  • X-23: Laura Kinney is an Opposite-Sex Clone of Wolverine created by the Facility via his blood. However, the genetic code obtained was damaged, especially the y chromosome, so Dr. Sarah Kinney, the head of the project, duplicated the x chromosome and used her DNA to fix it. Not only that, she also gave birth to Laura. Because of this, later stories more or less retcon Laura's clone status and treat her as basically Sarah's birth daughter.
  • Nate Grey a.k.a. X-Man is technically this, since he was created with Scott Summers and Jean Grey's DNA and gestated in an artificial womb. Despite this, being from another universe and only ten years their junior (and possibly less in Jean's case considering her frequent case of dead), both Jean and Scott consider him their son and he has a particularly strong rapport with Jean.

  • One case happens in Kid Icarus Uprising 2 Hades Revenge by Detsniy Off Skiword, after one of Pit's deaths. Cloud takes some of Pit's DNA and puts in a cloning machine that Prosper has, which she proceeds to turn on with her lightning powers, the lightning apparently carrying her DNA into the machine. This creates Atmo, a clone of both Pit and Prosper who gains the latter's ability to fly freely while otherwise seeming to have the former's abilities of an angel.
  • This happens a couple of times in Light and Dark The Adventures of Dark Yagami, the first example being when Night creates a chemical that can make good clones, as opposed to evil clones. Shortly after she tells Light about it, his hair accidentally ends up in the chemical, causing the clone machine to create Day Yagami, a good clone of both Night and Light. The second instance is when Dark and Night learn that an imposter of L is running around and need to find out his true identity, which leads to the two of them putting both their DNA in the cloning machine, as well as some lion DNA for strength, which ends up creating Dawn Yagami, who has both of their intelligence combined.

    Films — Animation
  • The Proud Family Movie features clones created by Dr. Marcus Garvey Carver II who are also part peanut. There is one humorous scene in which the clone Sugar Mama can speak Spanish because she's part Spanish peanut.

    Films — Live-Action
  • Godzilla:
    • Biollante is a mutated rose kaiju created by splicing the DNA of Godzilla, a rose, and a human girl named Erika Shiragami. She is treated as a plant clone of Godzilla but at the same time is also a monstrous clone of Erika.
    • SpaceGodzilla is an evil clone of Godzilla created when several G-Cells went into space and fused with living crystal organisms. Depending on which theory you go with (either SpaceGodzilla is descended from Godzilla's cells that were carried into space by Mothra after she went to destroy an asteroid, or are derived from some of Biollante's cells after she turned into spores and flew into space to survive her injuries), he's either a two- or three-donor clone, including the crystalline space organisms.
  • In Jurassic Park (1993), the dinosaurs are cloned from degraded DNA samples that are spliced with frog DNA to fill in the gaps. This turns out to allow the all-female population to reproduce, as some frogs can change sexes.
  • Nutty Professor II: The Klumps: In an attempt to finally get rid of the Buddy personality, Sherman extracts the Buddy part of his DNA into a blue liquid. Unfortunately, Buddy is reborn when the canister breaks and a piece of dog DNA gets introduced. Because of that dog DNA, Buddy exhibits dog-like behavior on occasion.
  • The Rise of Skywalker introduces strandcasting, a cloning process that adds genetic information of other species to the base template to produce a non-identical clone to the primary host. The film also reveals that Supreme Leader Snoke was actually a strandcast clone to Palpatine. Rey's father is also Palpatine's strandcast clone, making Rey the Emperor's granddaughter.

  • Mordred from Fate/Apocrypha is a homunculus clone of Altria Pendragon created by Morgan le Fay. However, she was created by Morgan stealing the sperm of a psuedo-male Altria and giving birth to her.

    Live-Action TV
  • Smallville: The series incarnation of Conner Kent/Superboy has a similar origin to his comic counterpart, albeit inverted: he starts off as a clone of Lex (designated as LX-15) that suffers from the same Rapid Aging and Clone Degeneration issues as his predecessors at first, until he begins to manifest his Kryptonian DNA (from a blood sample Helen Bryce had taken from Clark and Lex stole from her office), which from there on out becomes dominant.
  • Star Trek: Enterprise: In "Demons", a human supremacist group uses genetic material from Trip and T'Pol to clone a Half-Human Hybrid baby to use as a propaganda piece. Tragically, because they didn't bother to address the incompatible human and Vulcan genes, she ultimately dies a few weeks later, leaving the two "parents" heartbroken.

    Video Games
  • Amateur Surgeon 4: Regenerations: As the former explains on their first meeting, Hubris d'Obscene and Ignacious Bleed II are clones created from a combination of the original Dr. Ignacious Bleed and Dwayne Pipe's DNA, a fact that Ophelia Payne had been trying to hide from the latter clone (whom she created) via making him think that he was just a pure clone of Bleed. For this reason, both share Bleed's surgical talent and Dwayne's bug infestations. Hubris also treats Ignacious as if he was his brother, much like how he refers to Dwayne as his father.
Hubris: [to Ignacious] I was my father's child, with a touch of Bleed... And you were almost pure Ignacious — but with a touch of the obscene!
  • In Honkai Impact 3rd, it is revealed that Kiana Kaslana is actually a clone of the original Kiana created by Otto Apocalypse. However, it goes much deeper than that, since she is also a clone of Sirin, the second Herrscher, and possesses her Core which still contains her consciousness and soul. This also causes a situation in which there are two aspects of Sirin: Kiana Kaslana, the Sirin who wants the love of a family she never had, and Herrscher of Void, the Sirin who wants to destroy humanity for the cruelty they inflicted on her.
  • Kingdom Hearts: Xion is an imperfect replica of the protagonist Sora but is modeled and derived from his memories of his love interest Kairi, resulting in her being a combination of the two with the memories and abilities of Sora but with an appearance and voice similar to Kairi's.
  • Mortal Kombat: Mileena is a clone of Kitana but also has Tarkatan DNA in her genetic makeup.

    Web Animation
  • Eddsworld: In the episode "Spares", one of the rejected clones created by the Evil Director takes DNA from Tom and Tord, while another is made with DNA from them, Matt, and Edd.

    Webcomics
  • In Quantum Vibe, Nicole Oresme is an "osmotic clone" created from one of her mother's eggs and chromosomes from eleven other anonymous donors, one of whom turns out to be her boss, Dr. Seamus O'Murchadha, whom she later decides to refer to jokingly as her "uncle-grandpa".

    Web Videos
  • SuperMarioLogan: In "Chef Pee Pee's Kids!", Cody invents the B-b-b-baby Machine so that he can use it to make babies using the DNA from two different people. Cody first makes one using his DNA and Chef Pee Pee's and names it Chas, and Bowser Junior later makes one using his DNA and Chef Pee Pee's and names it Junior, Junior. Both the clones have human heads on turtle-like bodies.

    Western Animation
  • Gargoyles has Delilah, who is a clone mixing the DNA of Demona the gargoyle and Elisa Maza the human, and who is intended to be the obedient mate for Thailog. In this case, her species is a gargoyle from Demona's side but with her face, voice, and possibly her skin tone taken from Elisa.
  • Pinky and the Brain: In "Brinky", the Brain aspires to clone himself in yet another one of his schemes to take over the world. However, the process goes awry when one of Pinky's toenail clippings makes it into the cloning machine. This leads to a clone being created which is a combination of Pinky and the Brain's genetic material.
  • SpongeBob SquarePants: In "The Krusty Bucket", as part of his plan to steal the Krabby Patty secret formula, Plankton creates a clone called Plankrab using the DNA from Mr. Krabs' hair and his own antenna.
  • Young Justice (2010): Connor is a lab-made clone of Superman, yet strangely lacks some of the trademark superpowers like flight and heat vision. He later learns that there were gaps in the DNA he was made from which were patched with that of a human, resulting in Connor being significantly weaker than a normal Kryptonian. He is very displeased to find out that the other donor was Lex Luthor.

    Real Life
  • The clone sheep Dolly was created by having an unfertilized oocyte without a nucleus cell being injected with one from another sheep and then implanting the egg into another sheep to birth her. Meaning that she had the nuclear DNA of one sheep and the mitochondrial DNA of another. This procedure is still standard practice for cloning mammals.
  • Monozygotic/identical twins are a natural case of this occurring through some interesting technicalities. The twins are conceived through standard sperm/egg fertilization, which requires one unique donor for each cell. However, rather than being formed from two different, simultaneously present zygotes like dizygotic/fraternal twins, they come about from a sole zygote that divides into two embryos, resulting in the pair having identical genomes. As a result, scientists consider identical twins de-facto clones of one another.

"Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid"

In a homage to "The Fly", Brain figures out that his cloning experiment went wrong due to an unexpected contamination of Pinky's DNA. Then, when he tries to point this out to Pinky, he freaks when he realizes Pinky is right that they're parents.

How well does it match the trope?
