The tale was provided by Diyab in the early-18th century, but there are at least three similar European tales published earlier: Ancilotto, Re di Provino (Straparola, 1550s), L'Oiseau de Vérité (Eustache Le Noble, 1700 or 1722), and Princesse Belle-Étoile (Madame d'Aulnoy, 1698).
