Tropes pertaining to moments where characters smile. Smiling is a facial expression in which the eyes brighten and the corners of the mouth curve slightly upward. It expresses various emotions, especially happiness, amusement, pleasure, approval, or sometimes scorn.

- Bloody Smile: A character smiles while their mouth and/or teeth are covered in blood.
- Braces of Orthodontic Overkill: Braces are depicted as ugly and inconvenient, often shown when the character smiles.
- British Teeth: Non-British media's depiction British people as having bad teeth, generally in a visually unattractive way.
- Broken Smile: A creepy smile that indicates that a character has gone insane.
- Cheerful Child: A child who is optimistic and constantly happy, and thus prone to smiling.
- Cheer Them Up with Laughter: Making a sad person happy by making them laugh or smile.
- Cheshire Cat Grin: A really wide smile before a very mischievous act, often the archetypical smile of The Trickster.
- Cute Little Fangs: A character has a visible fang (or fangs), usually visible when they smile, to add to their cuteness.
- Died Happily Ever After: After a character dies, they are seen as happy just before or after they Ascend to a Higher Plane of Existence, often indicated by a smile.
- Dissonant Serenity: A character acts unsettlingly calm, e.g. smiling, even in the middle of a horrifying situation.
- Dreamworks Face: Smirking with a raised eyebrow in marketing and promotional material.
- Dying Smirk: A character grins, smirks or laughs ironically before dying.
- Ends with a Smile: A story ends with a character smiling.
- Fangs Are Evil: An evil or dangerous character is portrayed with fangs, often shown when they smile.
- Finger-Forced Smile: Sticking one's fingers into someone's mouth to force them to smile.
- Glasgow Grin: A large smile created by scarring the cheeks.
- Go Out with a Smile: A character dies smiling, usually as an indicator they went out happy or at peace.
- Grin of Audacity: A bold, confident smile/smirk when performing a risky task.
- Grin of Rage: Smiling or grinning when one is angry.
- "Have a Nice Day" Smile: The yellow smiley face with the message "Have a Nice Day".
- Just Smile and Nod: Instead of rebuking someone, a character just smiles and waits for them to finish talking.
- Mona Lisa Smile: Stock Shout-Out of Leonardo da Vinci's famous The Mona Lisa.
- More Teeth than the Osmond Family: A monster has lots of teeth, usually shown when it is smiling.
- "Oh, Crap!" Smile: A character gives a nervous smile after realizing they are in trouble.
- Ominous Adversarial Amusement: A villain smiling or laughing after being defeated as foreshadowing that they still have an advantage over the hero.
- Perpetual Frowner: A character is never (or rarely) seen smiling.
- Perpetual Smiler: A character is always seen smiling.
- Playful Cat Smile: A playful or mischievous smile, usually indicated by a ":3" in art.
- Psychotic Smirk: A character making a small devious smile is an indicator of trouble.
- Sideways Smile: Face-splitting smiles with obscured eyes viewed from the side profile.
- Slasher Smile: A character's malicious smile, often a big, creepy grin, is unsettling and often indicates insanity and violence.
- Smile of Approval: A character smiles at another character they initially disliked as a sign of admiration or respect.
- Smug Smiler: A character who always has an arrogant smile or smirk on their face.
- Stepford Consumer: A consumer in an advertisement who is seemingly excited for an item, no matter how mundane; no straight examples allowed.
- Stepford Smiler: The character smiles, but their smile is forced and emotionless; usually used to hide depression, emptiness, or insanity.
- Tearful Smile: Smiling while crying.
- Technically a Smile: Baring one's teeth in what looks like a smile, but does not work in expressing joy or friendliness.
- Tombstone Teeth: Big, straight, and rectangle-shaped teeth.
- Twinkle Smile: When a character smiles, they show teeth that are so white and spotless that there's an Audible Gleam or sparkling effect.
- The Un-Smile: A character attempts to smile, but their smile comes off as forced and unnerving.
- When She Smiles: A character who was depressed or grumpy beforehand finally starts smiling to show that they are at last experiencing happiness.
