Shared Identity

Multiple individuals sharing the same identity, without trying to pass as one individual. Rather than just sharing a name these characters share a name tied to a larger idea or concept, like multiple superheroes using the same name and costume.

One of the common ways to implement this is for a character to be killed or move on to another identity and have their legacy taken up by someone new, only for them to later return to using said identity alongside their Legacy Character.

Persons who share an identity may be subject to Amalgamated Individual when others mistake them for, or intentionally conflate them with, a single individual. When a number of characters are intentionally masquerading as one that is a Collective Identity.

Alliance of Alternates is when an identity is shared by allies because they are versions of the same character from different dimensions. Compare I Am Spartacus, which is when multiple people claim falsely to share an identity to protect the true holder of the identity.

Examples

    Anime and Manga
  • Baccano!: Claire decides to purchase the name Felix Walken so he can marry Chané without issue since he's legally dead. The name is passed between assassins, though it turns out the original Felix sold it to several people at once, who then sold it to more, so there are numerous assassins all named Felix Walken running around.
  • Durarara!!: A strange example with Izaya, who bought the name, Nakura, off one of his former classmates and uses it as an alias or online handle when he's committing particularly horrible deeds and doesn't want to use his real name. However, this is one of the ways he keeps Nakura under his thumb, as he can freely use the alias while doing things like pissing off the yakuza, but should anyone come after Nakura, Izaya is also the only one capable of protecting him.
  • Mobile Suit Victory Gundam: The League Militare leader Jin Gehanam who accompanies the cast is revealed to merely be one of several "Jin Gehanams" who hold the name simultaneously.

    Comic Books
  • Fairly common with DC Comics characters, generally by having a Legacy Character with multiple users using the name at the same time while still being clearly distinct from each other:
    • Batgirls (2021): Cass and Steph operate as a team using the Batgirl name, each using their very different costumes and personalities that can in no way be mistaken for the other.
    • During the Batman Bat Family Crossover "Battle for the Cowl", most members of Bat Family dress as their own versions of Batman (who was apparently dead at the time) to become eventually the definitive Legacy Character. With Two-Face adding to the mix with his own version of The Cowl.
    • For a while after Bruce's return from his apparent death both he and Dick operated as Batman simultaneously wearing slightly different costumes.
    • DC Comics Bombshells: The Batgirls are an entire group of young women inspired to put on a mask and fight fascists and other injustices by Batwoman. They all share the Batgirl name while crimefighting while each wears distinctive but similar costumes. Barbara Gordon separately uses the Batgirl name, as an unrelated violent vampire vigilante.
    • Depending on when in the timeline a story takes place there are generally two to three Flashes running about, all interconnected distinct speedster heroes with the public of the DCU being aware there are several Flashes.
    • Before the New 52 reboot, there were two Wildcats operating simultaneously in the Justice Society of America - Ted Grant, the original a street-level human hero, and Tom Bronson, his illegitimate werecat son.
    • Robin: Both Damian and Tim use the hero name Robin after Tim's return from being Ozymandias' prisoner. Tim also continues using the identity Red Robin depending on the occasion.
    • Shazam!: More recent iterations of Shazam include the Shazam Family, Billy's fellow foster siblings and briefly, his estranged father who can share Billy Batson's power when they say the magic word. While Billy is the main champion, they essentially all share the Shazam identity while having their own appearances and Color-Coded for Your Convenience costumes.
    • Following The Death of Superman four separate "Supermen" showed up with two of them claiming to actually be Superman, though in-universe Steel never actually used the Superman name nor claimed to be him and Superboy very much claimed the Superman name but made no secret he was acting as Superman's successor and was a clone. The other two also turned out not to be Clark, with the real Superman's return about a year later. Four of the Supermen then had to team up to stop Cyborg Superman as his true identity and intentions became clear.
    • Wonder Woman (1987): For a while, both Diana and her mother Hippolyta were both acting as Wonder Woman, though they had very different approaches and different costumes. This was used for a fake out in a battle only Diana had been shown at, with the mentioned dying Wonder Woman turning out to be Hippolyta.
  • Teased but averted with Mar-Vell, the first (Marvel Comics) Captain Marvel. On the few occasions he's brought back from the dead temporarily, he's normally addressed as "Mar-Vell" rather than his hero name "Captain Marvel" because the current bearer of the name is Carol Danvers. Even his 2020 Marvel Legends toy simply gives his name as "Mar-Vell", with no mention at all that he's the original Captain Marvel (presumably so people don't confuse him with the Carol Danvers iteration).
  • Spider-Man: There are times when Peter Parker and Miles Morales are Spider-Man simultaneously while maintaining their very distinctive individual styles.
  • On a couple of occasions there have been several distinct characters running about using the name Wolverine simultaneously. In addition to Logan, there has been Daken (as Dark Wolverine) and X-23 (becoming the official Legacy Character but also sharing space with Old Man Logan).

    Film
  • The A-Team: The pseudonym Mr. Lynch is used by various CIA agents in order to ensure their actions cannot be traced back to one specific individual, despite them each clearly and unabashedly not being the same man.

    Literature
  • In Fortune Riders, a book in the Trailsman series of pulp westerns, a woman named Penelope Jane Peabody hires the Trailsman to help her claim an inheritance. She shows him a letter from her late father's estate, whom she had never met, informing her of her inheritance. They soon encounter two other women claiming to be Penelope Jane Peabody, both of whom have letters identical to the one the first Penelope has. The Trailsman decides to take all three women with him and try to figure out who is telling the truth later, only to find they all are. Their father had had three illegitimate daughters and got them all named the same thing.
  • The Gone-Away World: The protagonist gets rescued and nursed back to health by a caravan of people who are all named 'K', not because they're trying to be one person, but to "encourage random reassessment of the nature of our relationships." In other words, whenever a K mentions another K, they have to think about the context in which they were mentioned and their relationships to each other to know which K they're talking about, forcing them to constantly consider who they are as people and so never lose sight of their humanity — as their founder, K, once did, prioritizing his job as a business executive so thoroughly that he almost lost the ability to behave like an irrational, emotional human being. Whenever multiple K's are in one scene, the protagonist must distinguish them with parentheses, such as K (the skeptic) and K (the Scotsman).

    Live-Action TV
  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer:
    • Buffy is initially the only Slayer, as there was only meant to be "one girl in all the world" with the power. But after she was killed by the Master, she was dead just long enough for another Slayer to be called before Buffy was revived by CPR, leading to Kendra sharing the role of Slayer and then Faith, after Kendra's death.
    • Taken up another level in Season 7 when all of the potential slayers are activated around the world, leading to all 1,800 girls (according to the comic's continuation) becoming Slayers simultaneously.
  • The Flash (2014): While the Flash starts out as the superhero identity of Barry Allen for a time he is joined by another distinctive speedster using the title.
  • Legend of the Seeker:
    • When Richard's latent magical abilities start to surface and cause him debilitating headaches, he is taken away for training. But, the team still needs the Seeker to stop the zombie apocalypse so Zedd names Leo the new Seeker. During this time, both Richard and Leo bore the title of "The Seeker".
    • The time Zedd lost his memories and regained his youth in his youthful arrogance named himself the Seeker as well.

    Theater
  • The basic premise of The Comedy of Errors is that a set of master and servant land in a strange city - where each has an identical twin with the same name, also master and servant. The titular errors are the result of confusing the twins from these pairs.

    Video Games
  • Fate/Grand Order: The Robin Hood that you summon in Chaldea reveals that he was actually part of a group of anonymous rogues that ALL called themselves Robin Hood.

    Webcomics
  • NEXT!!! Sound of the Future: Each Vocaloid model has hundreds or even thousands of individual androids that contribute to a shared image. They have the same names and each share similar physical characteristics like their hairstyle, hair color, and signature outfit, although they all still look recognizably different from each other. This can be a benefit for popular models like Hatsune Mikus, who can get famous purely based on the association between them and other popular idols of their model, but it can also stifle individuality and cause humans to credit their work to the collective whole instead of the one who is responsible.

    Western Animation
  • Steven Universe: Gems are always named the type of Gem that they are, though they have designation codes to at least differentiate them. During the baseball game, the team comprised of rubies all introduce themselves as 'Ruby' in various tones of voice.
    • Steven Universe: Future: When trying to treat Pink's former Pearl, Steven runs into the issue of having both her and Pearl named 'Pearl' so they decide to call her Volleyball to avoid issues.
  • Young Justice (2010): Barry is the currently active Flash with his predecessor Jay being retired, but when the safety of the Earth is threatened Jay takes the identity back up to help the heroes.
