Pimping the Offspring

Go To

"Who pimps... their own child?! Come on, bruh! Come on, bruh! It wasn't for, like, a Maserati, or no shit, dude. It's prolly, like, a 1944 station wagon, or some shit! Like, a Ford Focus! I've seen it all..."

The sexual abuse of children is one of the most reprehensible acts that a person can ever commit. Most people, even some criminals, take an extremely dim view towards the perpetrators of such acts, especially if they are parents. However, some parents are so reprehensible that they will actually try to profit from prostituting their own children for personal gain.

Money is a typical motivation for this type of behavior; some parents are greedy and pimp out their children for extra spending money or luxuries. If the parent owes some kind of debt, then some parents might be willing to pimp out their child to either earn the money to pay it back or have the debt cleared by letting the creditor sleep with their child. A parent who wants their children to become a star might do so by forcing their child to sleep with people to earn roles. Some parents may pimp out their child as an easy way to get them (and other children they may have) out of poverty.

While some parents actively pimp out their own children, some parents are willing to tolerate a known pedophile harming their children if they feel that can benefit from it or that going against the molester will be inconvenient for them. If the molester is someone extremely powerful, a cowardly parent might let their child be molested to protect themselves or gain favor with the molester. A neglectful parent might insist on allowing their children to be molested because they are apathetic or lazy to protect their children. A parent who is dating or married to a pedophile might allow said pedophile to molest their children to avoid being pestered for sex.

The identity of the molester might also be a factor in a parent's toleration of molestation. If the pedophile is a teacher, then an Education Mama might either feel that their children's grades are more important than their mental health or see it as an opportunity to get higher grades. Likewise, a Sports Dad may turn a blind eye to a Creepy Gym Coach who they hope can advance the kid's athletic career. If a parent's boss is a pedophile, they might allow their boss to sleep with their child in order to get a promotion and/or a raise. If a parent's lover is a pedophile, a parent might have used their children to convince their partner to get together or keep their partner in their life.

Sub-Trope of Abusive Parents. See also Parental Incest and Lecherous Stepparent for examples of parents molesting their own children and Useless Bystander Parent for cases of parents not caring that their kids are being molested. Contrast Wife Husbandry, when a person assumes a paternal role with a view of having sex with (and usually abusing) a child in their care.

Unfortunately, this is Truth in Television in some areas, usually where poverty is rampant.

  • Berserk:
    • The incident that led to Guts's Hates Being Touched mentality was being sold to Donovan, a pedophile soldier, by his adoptive father Gambino, a drunk who blamed Guts for his lover's death (she was already mentally imbalanced from miscarrying when she found Guts birthed from a corpse and adopted him). Guts murdered Donovan, then killed Gambino in self-defense after confronting him before setting off on his own.
    • A preteen Casca was sold to a nobleman by her dirt-poor family ostensibly to serve as a maid, but he tried to rape her before they'd even left the carriage. Fortunately, Griffith was there to rescue her (read: give her a sword and tell her to defend herself).
  • Yuko Kurose of Boy's Abyss was prostituted by her parents as soon as she turned fourteen. Supposedly, this was done to her because her father had massive debts, and they saw her as an avenue for extra money. This isn't even the first time this has happened; Yuko's mother, to console the girl (and herself), tells her that she was prostituted at a young age by her parents as well.
  • In the h-anime Discipline: The Record of a Crusade, Reina Morimoto is the dean at the St. Acadia Academy, and when Takoru Hiyanami is recruited to join the Social Club, basically as a toy for her younger sister Leona, he's told that he was sent to that school by his father, an employee for a company that is owned by the Morimoto conglomerate to avoid being charged with skimming company profits. It's also revealed that a significant number of the student body is comprised of the children, mostly daughters, of Morimoto employees, who sent their kids to the Academy to clear any debts or avoid criminal charges. The female students that are forced to join the Social Club are given a quality education as expected of an elite private school, however, they are also trained to have the prowess of a porn star in order to use them to procure favors from influential politicians and C.E.O.s'
  • KamiKatsu: Working for God in a Godless World: Generations of women in Summanus and Jupiter's family were forced to sell their bodies due to living in extreme poverty, with their elder sister wanting to prostitute Summanus as soon as she turned 11. Jupiter revealing her electric powers and their use as a stimulant for the electronic devices inserted on the back of people's necks led to them being exploited as cult subjects instead, with the elder sister continuing to treat them with contempt even as she got rich and Jupiter started breaking down due to overuse of her powers. After the elder sister is killed by Jupiter, both girls are experimented on and become faith-powered living weapons called "Archons". In the far future, Summanus ironically works as a cartoonist-cultist to gain power and comically makes a teenage girl named Atar into her H-doujin muse without even realizing what she's doing is wrong.
  • Not Simple has this occur to the protagonist Ian, as he was given up to a pimp as a thirteen-year-old to fuel his mother's drinking habit. Ian was too young to absorb the fact that he was abused this way, but everyone else in his life is righteously furious when they find out. In particular, his sister Kylie, who outright assaulted her boyfriend when she figures out he was Ian's pimp.
  • Downplayed in Taisho Otome Fairy Tale, when local delinquent Ryo Atsumi's already abusive father sold the sixteen-year-old's virginity to a stranger. He didn't tell her in advance, so Ryo didn't know she was being prostituted until her dad's "guest" was on top of her. Fortunately for the father, Ryo didn't resist for long, her will to remain chaste losing to her desire to put food on the table for her three younger brothers. Unfortunately for him, his eldest son couldn't accept his big sister selling herself, so he pried the man off at the last second and returned his money.

    Comic Books
  • Downplayed in Avengers Academy; Striker was molested by a Hollywood agent helping him get acting roles, and when he told his mother about the abuse, she claimed he was lying. It wasn't until Striker accidentally killed the man while defending himself from his advances with his manifesting powers that his mom apologized and realized he was telling the truth.
  • Miracleman: The Silver Age: As part of the comic's Cerebus Retcon of the original Miracleman comics from the 1950s, the comic reveals that Dicky Dauntless and several other boys from his orphanage were prostituted out to older men against their consent, only given the hollow reward of ice-cream.
  • Trolls de Troy: "Waha's story" introduces Waha's biological mother, looking for her daughter. It turns out she's a former prostitute turned madam and wants her daughter to succeed her after "working her way up the ranks". This disgusts even the series's Big Bad, who throws her off his Flying Mount the minute he learns of her intentions.

Sparky apologetically backs off, but another, more foolish, guy later decides she was making it up to draw attention. Taylor makes it painfully clear to him that Cherie is serious.
Cherie: Yeah, I moved to Brockton to get away from my sexually abusive father who had his friends use me whenever they came over. So, like, you're a nice guy probably, but I'm not in the right mindset to appreciate that. So no.
  • My Hero Academia My Body is Broken But It Is Mine has Aizawa discover that Endeavor has been doing this to Shouto since Shouto was little. Shouto accidentally hurts Sero over a flirty comment and when Aizawa leaves to get “supplies” to stabilize Sero, Shouto misunderstands and Aizawa returns to find Shouto naked, because every time Endeavor punishes him it’s with rape. Shouto then reveals that Endeavor coached him to preposition his colleagues during social events and they’d pay to have sex with them. The poor kid has no real clue about consent or what sex is meant to be like. Endeavor even had him preposition Present Mic once so he could then blackmail Mic to keep it quiet but Mic wasn’t interested between Shouto being his student and Mic being monogamous with Aizawa. Fortunately Shouto’s physical evidence and testimony are enough to get Endeavor arrested.
  • With Pearl and Ruby Glowing:
    • Daffy's mother, on top of emotionally abusing him, encouraged his father to molest him so she didn't have to have sex with him.
    • Both the Coachman and Cruella De Vi had no issues with selling their sons to Human Trafficking rings.

    Film — Live-Action
  • Compulsion (2013): It turns out that Saffron's Stage Mom let a director rape her to get a part.
  • Eyes Wide Shut: Milich the costume shop owner is enraged when he finds his teenage daughter cavorting with two older men; by the end of the film, he seems to have come around to the financial benefits and is pimping her out, even offering her services to Bill. For her part, the girl appears to be enjoying it.
  • Gigi: The title character is a tomboyish young woman being raised to be a "courtesan" for wealthy men by her Aunt Alicia and Madame Alvarez. This is apparently a family business, and Aunt Alicia actually looks down on Gigi's mother for going into acting instead but more because it pays less than because she left Gigi behind. This becomes an issue as her older friend Gaston develops feelings for her after She Is All Grown Up and makes an arrangement for Gigi to be his mistress. However, Gaston realizes the arrangement brings a lot of judgement onto Gigi and, realizing his feelings are too deep to let her go on like that, asks Madame Alvarez to marry Gigi, getting her out of that life.
  • Widows features a rare example of this happening to an adult. Alice has been broke since the death of her husband. Her abusive mother Agnieszka convinces her to become a High-Class Call Girl, viciously berating, Slut-Shaming, and even slapping her when she shows doubt about it. She does go through with it.

    Literature
  • Downplayed in The Accursed Kings, where it's mentioned little brothers in Italy will serve as their elder sisters' pimps (in the sense of advertising their sisters' charms rather than taking their earnings) to bring in more business.
  • Battle Royale: The main reason why Mitsuko believes All Men Are Perverts is because (in the original novel) when she was a child, her mother allowed three men to rape her in exchange for money. In the film this was changed to her allowing one man to attempt to rape her in exchange for money and in the manga this was changed to her doing nothing to stop her new husband from repeatedly molesting her.
  • Captive Prince: The final book reveals that Ambassador Guion deliberately gave the Regent, a child-molesting Villain with Good Publicity, access to his young son in order to ingratiate himself at court. In retribution, Guion's wife delivers a well-timed testimony that destroys their plot and helps get the Regent executed.
  • The Godfather: During Tom Hagen's visit to Hollywood, he happens to notice a twelve-year-old actress and her glowering Stage Mom in the waiting room of Jack Woltz's office. Later, while leaving Woltz's mansion, he sees the same actress being escorted out in a traumatized daze; by contrast, her mother looks nothing but triumphant. Tom disgustedly realizes that Woltz was raping her on the plane ride over (hence why Tom was sent to the mansion by limo instead), and it's implicitly hinted that the mother is serving as the pimp to a Casting Couch setup. This sickening act, which is called an infamita by Vito Corleone himself, is one of the contributors to the Don's decision to have Woltz's prize horse Khartoum killed in the infamous horse head scene.
  • Judge Dee: A number of prostitutes and concubines have "sold off to a brothel in childhood to pay off the family's debts" as their backstory (they rarely seem to hold a grudge against their family as it's usually due to a catastrophe like a famine or floods). Some of them showed enough talent in the arts (singing, dancing, poetry...) so they weren't put into sex work right away but educated into High-Class Call Girls.
  • Kushiel's Legacy: The protagonist Phèdre's parents paid off a debt by selling her into indenture at age four to be raised as a High-Class Call Girl by The Night Court. She enjoys her career, but although she doesn't resent her parents, nor does she think of them at all.
Aside from my mother's skills, which my father would not let her sell, I was their only commodity.
  • Catarina from the Lost Voices trilogy was sold into sex slavery by her parents in exchange for cigarettes and vodka.
  • In One Hundred Years of Solitude, the future Colonel Aureliano encounters Eréndira, a girl who accidentally burned down her house leading to her grandmother selling her into prostitution to repay the resulting debts. She later reappeared as the main character of Marquez' Spin-Off story, The Incredible and Sad Tale of Innocent Eréndira and her Heartless Grandmother.
  • The Thénardiers in Les Misérables are guilty of this. Their eldest daughter Éponine first meets her unrequited love Marius when she comes to his room bringing a letter from her father begging for money, with a postscript adding "My eldest daughter will await your orders" – clearly implying that in exchange for the money, Marius can do what he likes with her. Fortunately, Marius gives her five francs without acting on that suggestion.
  • Reign of the Seven Spellblades: In a non-monetary example, Ophelia Salvadori was made to be a de facto Breeding Slave for the family's quest to eugenically breed a "perfect" lifeform, which largely consisted of her mother putting her into proximity with a given male donor and letting her succubus pheromones do the rest. By the time she enrolled at Kimberly Magic Academy at age 15, Ophelia had already been pregnant dozens of times (mage gestation being much shorter than Muggles').
  • In the Vorkosigan Saga Sergeant Bothari's mother (who was herself a prostitute) used to sell him to her customers until he "got big enough to beat up her damned customers" at the age of twelve.

    Live-Action TV
  • Blackadder: Attempted by Kate's father in "Bells," when he tries to convince her to become a prostitute because they're so impoverished. She refuses.
Kate: 'Tis better to die poor than to live in shame and ignominy.
    Father: No, it isn't.

    • In one episode, a man tries to pimp his daughter (who is implied to have Down syndrome) to Ben Hawkins, telling him, "She don't complain". Ben does not stand for it.
    • Stumpy works as a pimp for both of his daughters, Libby and Dora Mae. It's slightly mitigated by them being of legal age, but it doesn’t make the situation less warped.

  • Claws: In the season 1 finale, Polly rescues her adolescent neighbor Marnie from being forced into prostitution to fund her mother's drug addiction.

  • FBI: Most Wanted: "Chains" features the monstrous Brad Wallace who is revealed to be running a horrific operation where he pimps out his own daughter Ollie to rich pedophiles for money, touring the poor child across the country. When Agent Hanna Gibson stumbles onto his activities, Brad abducts her and plans to dispose of her by selling her to one of his Human Trafficker contacts.
  • Harlots:
    • Justified and deconstructed. Margaret Wells is a brothel madam who employs her own daughters, Charlotte and Lucy, and the first episode sees her auctioning off the latter's virginity. While the show spends a lot of time showing how this negatively affects the sisters, Margaret is framed as brutally pragmatic rather than outright monstrous. In the harsh, intensely misogynist world of 18th-century London, there aren't many employment opportunities for women and marriage puts them at the mercy of a husband who may turn out to be abusive, feckless, or both. Margaret genuinely believes that prostitution is the best option for her daughters because they can make their own money while retaining a degree of freedom. Furthermore, Margaret is dealing with the trauma of being sold to a madam by her own mother when she was a little girl. Margaret initially views herself as a good parent because she didn't abandon her kids and provided for their material needs, but over time she does come to see the faults of her parenting. Her relationship with her daughters is complicated, especially with The Unfavorite Charlotte, but the three of them deeply love each other regardless.
    • Subverted. Elizabeth Harvey operates a molly-house (secret brothel for gay men) where her son Fredo works. However, Fredo is a willing adult and part-owner of the business rather than an exploited child. Because homosexuality is a capital crime in this setting, molly-houses are one of the very few places where gay men can meet each other for romantic/sexual encounters. Elizabeth opens the molly-house specifically so Fredo can have a safe place to express his sexuality and puts herself at great risk to hide his secret. Therefore, she is portrayed as an Open-Minded Parent and Mama Bear, not as an abuser.
  • How to Get Away with Murder: During Bonnie Winterbottom's childhood, not only was her father a vicious paedophile who regularly abused her, but "I Love Her" reveals that starting at the age of fourteen, he also forced her into prostitution, allowing numerous men to rape her for cash, eventually resulting in her getting pregnant.
  • It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia: "The Gang Gets Whacked" has an example where the offspring is an adult; the main characters find themselves in debt to The Mafia after selling a bag of cocaine they found inside a pair of stolen speakers. Frank's solution is to pressure Dennis into working as a male escort, which escalates to Frank acting like a pimp who forces Dennis to sleep with clients.

  • New Tricks:
    • Revealed to be the crux of the investigation into the murder of young rising tennis star Alice Kemp in "Love Means Nothing in Tennis." As it turns out, her mother Victoria was well aware that Alice's coach had been molesting her for years but enabled it, as she only cared about ensuring Alice became a star so that she could live off her success. When Alice finally had enough of the abuse and made clear she was quitting tennis, Victoria murdered her. Even worse, it's revealed Victoria is now putting Alice's younger sister through the exact same abuse to replace Alice, all for her own benefit.

When Marion's sister Elise finds out about this, she sees from the look on her mother's face that her mother already knew. This leads to Elise disowning her and taking her granddaughters away before telling Marion that she will never let her down like this again.

  • Reba McEntire: Originally written by Bobbie Gentry in 1969 and covered by McEntire in 1990, "Fancy" is about a girl in Louisiana named Fancy who lives in desperate poverty with her ailing mother and baby sibling, abandoned by their father. Her mother spends all of their money on a nice dress for her, does up her hair and makeup, and turns her out to become a prostitute in order to have at least one chance to escape their circumstances. Her mother dies not long after and the baby is taken by child welfare, but Fancy slowly does end up becoming wealthy by essentially becoming a courtesan for rich, influential men, and while she has no qualms with her circumstances and scorns those who would speak ill of her mother for what she did, she's still haunted by her family being in a situation that led her mother to make that choice.
  • Sublime: "Wrong Way."
Annie's twelve years old, in two more, she'll be a whore
Nobody ever told her it's the wrong way
Don't be afraid with the quickness you get laid
For your family, get paid, it's the wrong way
    [...]
The only family that she's ever had was her seven horny brothers and her drunk-ass dad
He needed money so he put her on the street
Everything was going fine until the day she met me.

    Mythology and Religion
  • In the Book of Genesis, Abraham's nephew Lot, who lives in Sodom, is keeping two guests who happen to be angels. When some men of the city surround Lot's house and demand to sexual assault the guests, Lot is so appalled by this violation of Sacred Hospitality that he offers them his own daughters. Fortunately for his daughters, the angels intervene, striking the men blind and guiding Lot and his family out of the city before it is destroyed.

Louise, while already a young woman, is a sexual innocent who has only ever done cutesy vaudeville dances, and as such is not happy being signed up for this, while Herbie, her agent who holds a torch for her mother, is so disgusted that he leaves Rose for good. Ironically, this enables Louise to become the world-famous Gypsy Rose Lee, getting out from under her mother's thumb for good.

  • A variant of this trope is Isabela's backstory in Dragon Age II. As she explains, her mother converted to a different religion and, when the teenage Isabela refused to convert along with her, she sold the girl into marriage to a brute in exchange for a goat and a few coins. ("Bitch didn't even haggle.") Isabela's husband, in turn, allowed his friends to use her as entertainment whenever they wanted. She only escaped the life when her husband was murdered, and she remains friends with his killer.
