Examples of Love Triangles in Anime & Manga series.
  • 07-Ghost:
    • Vanessa loves, and is politically married to King Krom. Krom's true love is Millea, whom he made a concubine. Teito is Millea's mother.
    • Later on in the manga we find out Millea is at the center of a love triangle as well: King Wolf Barsburg has long been in love with Millea who, while still living in Barsburg, fell in love with Krom, resulting in the love triangle above.
  • In ½ Prince Lan/Prince has, in addition to a swarm of female admirers, two main love interests, Zhou/Wicked, who knows she's a girl, and Gui, who thinks she's a boy but states that he doesn't really care about her gender. While she's initially annoyed with Gui and oblivious to Wicked's feelings, she eventually realizes that both of them really love her, and begins to angst over how she'll have to seriously hurt either her childhood friend or the man who's cheerfully sacrificed for her in subtle ways since she met him. She ends up married to the latter, Gui.
  • Ai Yori Aoshi: Tina likes Kaoru, but Kaoru and Aoi are the Official Couple. Complicated by the fact that Tina and Aoi like and respect each other.
  • This type of triangle pops in Akuma no Riddle, with Chitaru Namatame pursued by both Hitsugi Kirigaya and Shiena Kenmochi. It ends with all three of them dying.
  • Alice 19th: Frey falls for Alice, who has reciprocated feelings for and eventually gets together with Kyo.
  • In Area no Kishi, it is revealed in a flash back that the protagonist Kakeru realized that he had a crush on childhood friend and football teammate Seven. After working up the nerve to confess his feelings, he happens upon Seven as she is confessing her feelings for his older brother, Suguru.
  • Attack on Titan:
    • Both Ymir and Reiner have feelings for Krista. The former is officially stated to be in love with her, while the later has a crush that may or may not be serious. Krista, for her part, hasn't shown that she considers either one of them as anything more than a friend.
    • Jean's attraction to Mikasa fuels much of the tension he has with Eren. Eren, for his part, is utterly oblivious to Mikasa's feelings for him and may in turn have feelings for Annie. Mikasa even calls him out of this, demanding to know if he has "special feelings" for Annie.
  • Suzu and Matsuri of Ayakashi Triangle have a mutual (and mutually reluctant) love for each other, even after Matsuri is turned female. Soga is attracted to both in different ways: He unhesitatingly loves Suzu, which he's able to confess to Matsuri, but can barely talk to Suzu or girls in general. Soga also has feelings for Matsuri's female form, which Soga rejects because Matsuri still identifies a male—yet for the same reason, Soga is much more talkative to Matsuri than any other female, furthering his infatuation.
  • Defied in Bakuman。 as Takagi shuts down the love triangle between him, Miyoshi and Iwase as soon as he's aware of it, remarking how stupid the whole situation actually is. He says that as a manga artist, he has no time for love, and plans on going with Miyoshi to North High(which is apparently less rigorous than the best he could hope for), causing Iwase, who disapproves of this plan, to essentially take herself out of the running to be his girlfriend. The possibility of it becoming a distracting Plot Tumor is killed from the get-go, unlike in a lot of other Shonen manga where the Love Triangles are allowed to linger for years without contributing to the plot or showing any signs of being resolved.
  • In Beastars, Legosi comes to love Haru, Louis is friends-with-benefits with Haru, and Haru is caught in the middle.
  • Berserk has used this trope repeatedly throughout its run.
    • The major one was the triangle of Guts, Casca, and Griffith. Guts's and Casca's romance with each other is undercut by their (separate) loyalty and attraction to their leader, Griffith. Said attraction is emotional, with implied physical undertones in both cases. Griffith himself seems incapable of entirely returning either's feelings, but does care deeply for both and shows a certain amount of emotional and physical attraction to Guts. No, it does not end well. Later, the initial triangle is echoed in the relationship between Serpico, Farnese, and Guts: Serpico cares deeply for Farnese and is jealous of how much she idolizes and depends on Guts, making him take the back seat as it were. In the celebration at Elfhelm, Serpico admits these feelings to Guts and even says he contemplated killing him but also says Guts had changed Farnese's life for the better. Especially thanking Guts for putting Farnese in charge of the weaker Casca which gives the former strength and purpose.
    • There some form of love triangle with Isidro, Schierke, and Guts as well, which is kinda weird considering, Guts looks after both of them like their his kids). Both children seek his care and approval, Isidro getting jealous when Schierke shows greater talent than he does. Schierke also having a school-girl crush on Guts while bickering with Isidro who has some unsaid feeling for her makes things more difficult. Really Guts treats them like son and daughter so any romantic thoughts are solely on Schierke's end, the justification is that she has a father complex. Gut's place on the triangle is replaced by Isma who Isidro is attracted which Schierke finds annoying.
    • The love triangle between Guts-Casca-Farnese is ongoing. Guts is completely in love with Casca, who unfortunately can't love him back due to a series of unfortunate events, but he is devoted to her and only her and it is, in fact, the whole reason why Guts is on his current mission. Farnese, on the other hand, is in love with Guts, but he doesn't see her as anything more than Casca's caretaker. While she cares for Casca a lot (which brings on some more implications) and she knows that it really isn't Casca's fault for acting like such, Farnese still can't fight with her inner feelings that Casca is ungrateful toward Guts which causes some resentment on her part. To make matters more complicated, Farnese is engaged to Roderick who had no idea she loves another man.
  • Bloom Into You: Sayaka is in love with Touko, Touko is in love with Yuu, and Yuu, despite initially thinking she'll never fall in love, gradually falls for Touko. In the end, after a Love Confession from Yuu to Touko that goes badly, Sayaka confesses to Touko, who turns her down and gets together with Yuu. Ironically, in Chapter 20, in which Touko, Yuu and Sayaka share a room with each other while preparing for a play together, the fact that the three of them are together helps them keep themselves in check, along with the fact that Yuu and Sayaka are relatively civil despite being love rivals, helps the three of them coexist without problems.
  • Blue Flag has a type 5: Taichi decides to help Kuze to conquer his own Childhood Friend and the most desired boy in school, Touma, however, in the proccess, he he starts falling for her. Turns out to be actually a type 2: Touma is in love with Ichinose, and implied to be ever since they were kids.
  • Boy's Abyss Reiji's childhood friend Chako, likes him and wants to leave their hometown together. Reiji likes her back and also wants to go together to a university in Tokyo. While his homeroom teacher/girlfriend Ms. Shibasawa falls for him hard enough to get Yandere over him, stalking him and refusing to accept his break-up attempt with her.
  • Canaan has a pretty tragic setup involving this among the villains. Cummings is in love with Liang Qi, but Liang Qi treats Cummings like crap and only has eyes for her boss and Onee-sama Alphard, who she is Yandere for in a big way. Alphard, meanwhile, couldn't care less about either of them, and harbors a bit of an obsession toward Canaan, which Liang Qi murderously despises Canaan for. Canaan, for her part, primarily sees Alphard as an enemy, and the closest person she has to an actual Love Interest (if even that) is Maria.
  • Captain Tsubasa:
    • In the pilot episode, there was one between the childhood friends Genzou Wakabayashi, Tarou Tsubasa and Aki Yamazaki. Genzou asked Aki out, but she politely refused him as she already liked Tarou.
    • In the series itself, the first part's potential love triangle between Tsubasa Ohzora, Sanae Nakazawa and Yayoi Aoba fizzled out almost immediately after Yayoi's first appearance, as she focused more on her team captain Misugi. However, in the second part the trope was played straight between Tsubasa, Sanae and the new assistant Kumi. Sanae won easily, and so much that she managed to marry Tsubasa when they were old enough for it.
  • Cardcaptor Sakura: Tomoyo is in love with Sakura. Sakura and Syaoran both have crushes on each other. Because of I Want My Beloved to Be Happy, Tomoyo takes it on herself to get the two of them together.
  • In Case Closed, both Hot-Blooded Detective Takagi and Non-Idle Rich Detective Shiratori are after Action Girl Sato. Technically all the young men in their station are after Satou's affections, but these two are the ones with the biggest chances. Satou chooses Takagi, but few afterwards Shiratori finds the girl he actually loves. It also looks like a potential one's shaping between Heiji Hattori, Kazuha Touyama and Momiji Oouka. Movie 21 will focus on it.
  • Ceres, Celestial Legend: Yuuhi falls for Aya, who instantly falls for and eventually gets together with Toya.
  • In Cherry Juice, Minami begins falling for his step-sister Otome, after she finally gets up the nerve to ask out his best friend Amane who she has been crushing on for years. As Minami becomes increasingly more jealous of their relationship, Otome starts to realize that she has the same feelings for him (which has been obvious to her friends and grandmother for a long time.)
  • The story of Chihayafuru starts when Genki Girl Chihaya takes an interest in New Transfer Student Arata, which infuriates her Tsundere Crazy Jealous Guy friend Taichi. Several years later all three are friends and Taichi and Chihaya are separated from Arata who now lives in another district, but the tension is still there. Also, we are later introducer to another character, Sumire, who has has a crush on Taichi (like most of the girls in his school, really) and forms another Love Triangle with him and Chihaya, but also is able to recognize the nature of Taichi-Chihaya-Arata situation at instant when she meets the last of them.
  • Clover:
    • Kazuhiko is in love with Ora, Bols wants Kazuhiko but not vice versa. Suu has a crush on both Ora and Kazuhiko.
    • Ran from Clover loves A as a brother, but A has decidedly un-brotherly feelings for Ran. Ran, meanwhile, is also in a relationship with Gingetsu.
  • Code Geass seems to follow up the inexplicable tradition of Real Robot shows having love triangles. Lelouch vi Britannia, the Anti-Hero protagonist is the center of affections for both Mysterious Waif C.C. and Fiery Redhead Action Girl Kallen. To complicate things, Kallen is also involved in a Two-Person Love Triangle with Lelouch's alter-ego, Zero. The second season folds down the Kallen triangle into the main triangle as she learns that Lelouch is Zero. The outcomes differ wildly between continuities. The anime continuity has the triangle fall apart as Lelouch, having fallen over the Despair Event Horizon, arranges his own death in his final big plan, and is willingly assassinated by Suzaku at the very end. So neither of the girls end up winning him. The Alternate Reality Compilation Movie continuity (that ends up being continued in Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;surrection) has a resurrected Lelouch choose C.C. And there's the tangential relationship between Lelouch and Shirley. In the TV Series, this is the first to go bust as Shirley finds out Lelouch got her father killed, has her memories wiped by him, gets them back way later... and then is shot dead by Rolo because she knew some things she shouldn't have. Though she did get to confess to Lelouch before dying. The movies, on the other hand, simply exclude her from any sort of relationship instead, keeping her a mere side character with only a small effect on the plot.
  • In Cowboy Bebop, Julia was in a relationship with Vicious before she and Spike fell in love. When Vicious found out, it didn't end well.
  • Cross Ange: Ange's primary love interest throughout the series is Tusk, with whom she eventually consummates about 3/4 of the way through. She has also expressed a mutual interest in Hilda, who prefers women but also once offered to sleep with Tusk in exchange for him helping her rescue Ange (he didn't take her up on it). The "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue shows them running a cafe together, but offers no further clues on how their relationship ended up.
  • Daimos: Kazuya is oblivious to the fact that his adoptive little sister, Nana, has had feelings for him ever since they were children. When Earth is plinged into a war with Planet Baam and their Alien Princess ends up in his arms, he falls for her, hard, and Nana sobs and seethes about it for a while before eventually accepting that she can't change his heart, and Kazuya loves her in his own way.
  • Daltanious: Princess Catine initially pursued Kento because she wanted to claim the Heliosian throne, and Kento is the last of the planet's royal lineage. She was even willing to overlook the fact that he was a Half-Human Hybrid just to get a chance at being the Queen of Helios. However, when she sees Kento with his female friend Sanae, she becomes angry and starts insulting Sanae, mocking how poor she looks and blaming her for why Kento doesn't love her. Jiro and Manabu speculate to one another that Sanae has feelings for Kento but Cannot Spit It Out, hence why Catine's remarks cut so deep.
  • Dagashi Kashi has Kokonotsu, Hotaru and Saya. Saya has a crush on Kokonotsu who is oblivious to her feelings and who instead has an obvious crush on Hotaru. Hotaru for her part seemed largerly unconcerned about romance at first but later chapters suggest she might reciprocate Kokonotsu's feelings.
  • Dance in the Vampire Bund: Akira is in a relationship with the vampire queen Mina as the manga's Official Couple. Two different people are attracted to Akira at different times.
    • Akira's female classmate Yuki has a crush on him at the start of the manga, which she confesses to him in the first chapter, but he rebuffs her. After seeing how deeply in love he is with Mina, she lets the crush go, and she and Mina become best friends.
    • His male childhood friend Angie also harbors feelings for Akira that go unrequited. Because Angie is afraid that Akira could forget about him because of his love for Mina, things get bad with these three.
  • Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak High School has one of these between Kyosuke Munakata, Chisa Yukizome, and Juzo Sakakura. Juzo is attracted to Kyosuke, who is part of the Official Couple with Chisa.
  • Death Note:
    • L is obsessed with his suspects, Misa in love with and obsessed with Light but teases / flirts with L, and Light obsessed with L and pretending to have a relationship with Misa.
    • Another one crops up later with Takada seeing both Mikami and Light, but Mikami is also VERY loyal to Light...
  • Deltora Quest has three (which is fitting) love triangles, all involving Lief and Jasmine mainly done to throw wrenches in their ''just kiss already'' romance.
    • First one is Lief, Jasmine and Neridah. Lief finds himself attracted to Neridah (for reasonable reasons) and Jasmine does NOT like it. Neridah plays around with gullible Lief making him lower his guard and then proceeds to attack him and knocks him out Rithmere Games, Jasmine is not in the least bit sympathetic with his loss. Whenever Neridah shows up again in the show, she sure to be melodramatically grabbing hold of Lief and Jasmine getting pissed, this got so annoying many fans wished Neridah would die like she did in the books.
    • In some painfully forced Filler Lief meets sweet girl named Francoise and promises to look after her (much to Jasmine's annoyance), as it turns out Francoise is actually two of Sorceress Thaegan's monsters children disguised as a girl, and continually tries to kill Lief with Jasmine saving him at the last second and making a scene, causing antics. Lief just assumes Jasmine is jealous (much to her fury), only to realize later that Francoise is indeed false and apologizes to Jasmine after the big battle.
    • The third and finally love triangle is between Lief, Jasmine and Dain it happens in the books too but is far less apparent, Dain openly shows interest in Jasmine much to her bewilderment and Lief's jealously. Jasmine see connection she has with Dain as it "seems" they are both orphans and Dain even gives her necklace when they are on a river cruise causing Barda to point out how smooth Dain is being to a irate Lief. Dain is then captured and Jasmine is clearly worried, Lief too wants to save Dain but is still jealous of how close Dain is to Jasmine (due to high possibility Dain is the heir to throne) . Thankfully the love triangle end as it turns out Dain is a evil Voluntary Shapeshifting monster whose been spying on the Lief & co and was lying the whole time. And reveals himself just as they hand him the Belt of Deltora and then gloats about it, even mocking Jasmine for her feelings for him causing much heart brake and in the manga to add salt to wound the necklace he gave Jasmine was a tracking device). Lief then goes after Dain and kills him, though this mainly to get the belt back but it's clear he's taking revenge.
    • Though they're very coy in the anime, Lief and Jasmine do get married in the books.
  • Denki-gai no Honya-san has Hio-tan and Director, who like each other but can't quite say it out loud, and Kameko, who likes Director but knows that the feeling isn't mutual.
  • A rather odd Boys' Love version resides in Descendants of Darkness, involving Tsuzuki Asato, Tsuzuki's partner Kurosaki Hisoka, and Hisoka's rapist/murderer, and psychotic doctor, Muraki Kazutaka, who has a strange fascination with Tsuzuki. Fanfictions naturally ensue.
  • Destiny of the Shrine Maiden: Chikane and Souma are both in love with Himeko. She's attracted to both, but Chikane is her destined lover.
  • Domestic Girlfriend has Natsuo, Rui, and Hina. Bonus points for the three being step-siblings.
  • Dragon Ball Z: In the Filler of Gohan in high school before the Babidi saga, Gohan gets into short lived love triangle with Videl and Sharpner who is love with Videl who is beginning to have feelings for Gohan who is disguised as Great Saiyanman. Videl successfully makes Sharpner jealous of Gohan and he spends to whole episode trying to unmask him but is foiled though hijinks. Since Gohan other female classmates, Erasa and Angela was also had big crushes on Gohan while Videl was still chasing him that also counts. All put to rest when Gohan marries Videl.
  • Much of ef - a tale of memories revolves around the love triangle between Kei, Hiro and Miyako. Miyako wins. Kei may or may not get together with Kyousuke.
  • In Elfen Lied, Clingy Jealous Girl Yuuka has been in love with Kouta since they were kids. Homicidal maniac Lucy has also been in love with Kouta since they were kids. Kouta doesn't really remember any of it, though, due to Trauma-Induced Amnesia caused by Lucy murdering his father and little sister, but now he's going to the same college as Yuuka and Lucy has dropped back into his life as a completely innocent girl with no memory at all, or indeed the ability to talk, except for occasional moments of clarity/Ax Craziness. Also, Yuuka and Kouta are cousins. (Though this is Values Dissonance: cousin marriages aren't as badly seen in Japan)
  • Fairy Tail:
    • More of a love square, but in the background, both Jet and Droy are trying to win Levy's heart. However, most Ship Tease with her has been with Gajeel instead, and yet the two of them seem to be Just Friends, if that. Not that it stops Jet and Droy from hating him that much more.
    • There's also a very odd one in regarding Gray and Lyon for Juvia. Juvia loves Gray, but Gray doesn't show romantic interest. Lyon likes Juvia, but Juvia finds him creepy. Lyon sees Gray as a love rival, but Gray doesn't understand.
  • Fist of the North Star: Kenshiro, Shin, and Yuria have this relationship, with Shin desiring Yuria but being unable to have her due to her and Ken being betrothed. This eventually leads to Shin (with a little prodding from Jagi) deciding to kill Ken and take Yuria for himself.
  • In Flowering Heart, Ari has feelings for Chess and his half-brother Trump.
  • In the fifth story in the Yuri anthology Fluffy White Paper, Mizuho and her friend Tsubame are clearly attracted to each other, even though neither is willing to admit it except as a joke, presumably because neither is comfortable with their orientation yet. Meanwhile, a male classmate, Naito, has a crush on Mizuho and asks her out, and despite feeling no attraction towards him whatsoever, she is genuinely considering going through with it just to make him happy and to get their classmates to stop bullying her for being the “Confession Crusher”. Tsubame then convinces her that entering a loveless relationship would be a very bad idea and wouldn’t be fair to the other party anyway, which finally gives Mizuho the courage to turn down Naito’s confession and instead kiss Tsubame and ask her out right in front of him. (He’s totally shocked, but it’s implied that he doesn’t resent her for it—at least, there is no indication of the couple later suffering homophobic harassment for scorning him.)
  • Freezing: Satellizer and Kazuya are the Official Couple from roughly the first chapter; the biggest stumbling block is Satella's fear of intimacy due to being sexually abused by her foster brother as a child. Rana Linchen declared Kazuya her fated mate in her first appearance, but he doesn't return her feelings at all.
  • Played with in Fruits Basket:
    • Kyo and Yuki never precisely compete for Tohru, but they both care about her and their rivalry sometimes extends into this. Later, it shifts to Kyo/Tohru/Momiji about halfway through the story, since Yuki realizes that he doesn't love Tohru romantically, and he eventually ends up with Machi.
    • There's another, more twisted triangle which involves Shigure, Akito and Kureno. It later ends with Shigure and Akito getting together, while Kureno goes with Uotani.
  • The principal love triangle of Full Metal Panic! encapsulates the primary female leads of the series, Kaname and Tessa, and their individual versions of affection for male lead Sousuke (who is unaware or just beginning to understand that he's in love with Kaname, and mainly sees Tessa as his superior officer and friend, much to her frustration). Plus, the fact that Sousuke and karate club president Tsubaki can hardly stand each other is undoubtedly fueled by the fact that they're both smitten with Kaname. Around the same time, it's made fairly clear that Tessa is something of a Hopeless Suitor, her brother starts showing very clear interest in Chidori. This element dominates its fair share of the story's later drama.
  • While Fushigi Yuugi has a huge Love Dodecahedron, the prequel Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden has a simple Love Triangle between Takiko Ohkuda aka Genbu no Miko, Prince Uruki aka one of her Genbu Seishi, and their ally Firuka. Nope, it was a misunderstanding. The guy that Firuka actually likes is Urumiya Hagas, another of the Genbu Seishi.
  • Rentarou and twins Sara and Sojyu enjoy a happy relationship together in Futakoi Alternative. Fighting is not uncommon, but there's no competition for affection or attention.
  • A brutally twisted version of this occurs in Future Diary considering how two ends of the triangle, Akise and Yuno, are both Yandere (Yuno even more so) for Yukiteru. However, in chapter 51 Yuno stabs Akise in retaliation for him kissing Yukiteru and later kills him by cutting his head off.
  • In Future GPX Cyber Formula, Asuka Sugo finds herself in this situation involving her, her teammate and rookie Hayato Kazami and the aristocratic and sports veteran Karl Lichter von Randoll, which plays a role in their intense rivalry in races. In the end, she obviously chooses Hayato, and end up getting engaged in the series.
  • Gakuen Babysitters has a love triangle involving Ryuuichi, Ushimaru, and Inomata. However, it's not really a major element of the story.
  • Gankutsuou:
    • There are two major love triangles, in two different generations. Edmund Dantes and Fernando Mondigo were both in love with Mercedes, who was engaged to Edmund. Fernand gets proactive. In the next generation, Franz and Eugenie are both in love with Albert, who is engaged to Eugenie. Franz had long ago made the decision to support Albert and Eugenie, and dies without Eugenie or Albert ever knowing that there was a love triangle.
    • There's a more minor love triangle, when Maximilian and Franz's fiancee, Valentine, fall in love. Decidedly resolved when Franz pledges his support to Maximilian and helps him rescue Valentine from her family. The most easily resolved triangle, what with the hypotenuse being a gay Shipper on Deck.
  • Gantz has one between Kei Kurono, Masaru Kato and Kei Kishimoto then one between Kei Kurono, Tae Kojima and Reika Shimohira but later the second Kei Kurono makes it into a love rectangle.
  • It is very common in all seasons of Gundam. Usually, one of the girl in the triangle dies, leaving the other one to win.
    • Mobile Suit Gundam has Amuro, Lalah and Char; Amuro, Fraw and Sayla; Amuro, Hayato and Fraw; Amuro, Sayla and Lalah... Damn it, Amuro! There's also Bright, Mirai and Cameron (and Sleggar). In the end, Amuro accidentally killed Lalah, who was protecting Char. Fraw hooks up with Hayato. Sayla ends up with no one. And finally, Bright ends up marrying Mirai and they have children.
    • Zeta Gundam has Kamille, Fa and Four. Kamille ends up with Fa (albeit in the sequel). Four dies.
    • Gundam ZZ has Judau, Roux, Elle and Haman, Judau, Beecher and Elle, Judau, Roux and Glemmy...Damn you too, Judau! He chooses Roux, Beecher and Elle get together, and Roux kills Glemmy.
    • Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack had Quess, Hathaway and Gyunei. Things turned ugly for these three.
    • G Gundam has Domon, Rain and Allenby. Rain became Domon's Victorious Childhood Friend, while Allenby gave way to them.
    • After War Gundam X has Garrod, Tiffa and Ennil; and Sala, Roybea and Jamil. Garrod and Tiffa got together and so is Jamil and Sala. Graceful Losers Roybea and Enni apparently made a Last-Minute Hookup
    • Except for promotional images, Gundam SEED's main triangle are Kira, Flay and Sai. Kira and Sai patch things up and moved on with their lives, plus Kira ends up with Lacus. Flay on the other hand dies in the end.
    • Gundam SEED Destiny has many courtesy of Athrun's harem. Damn you three Athrun! In the end, Luna goes with Shinn, Meer dies, Cagalli breaks her engagement to Athrun but it's left open-ended so it's rather likely that they'll get back together when their work is over, and in the meantime Meyrin and Athrun are very close friends so it seems that, if Cagalli decides to stay Marriedto The Job, she may have her own chance.
    • Gundam 00 has Saji, Louise and Andrei. Andrei attempted to Murder the Hypotenuse but failed thanks to The Hero Setsuna's intervention, and the until-then Star-Crossed Lovers Saji and Louise are able to reconcile. In The Movie Saji and Louise stay together and Andrei, now The Atoner, goes the Redemption Equals Death way.
    • Gundam Unicorn has two: Micott, Banagher, and Audrey and Banagher, Audrey, and Riddhe in the light novels. Only the latter love triangle appears in the OVAs.
    • Gundam Age has Flit with Emily and Yurin. Damn you, Flit! Emily wins and becomes Asemu's mother in the end, since Yurin went the Stuffed in the Fridge way. And she's painfully aware of it. Asemu gets his own love triangle, involving Romary and Zeheart. Romary seems to choose Zeheart at first, but by the end of the second generation, marries Asemu and they have Kio. Zeheart goes the Anti-Villain way and ultimately dies.
    • Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans has McGillis, Carta and Almeria; and Mikazuki, Kudelia and Atra. It turns out McGillis sends Carta to her death while he marries Almeria after killing her brother and this is only for means to increase his role as Gjallarhorn's new leader. Kudelia stays on Earth as Makanai's adviser while Mikazuki heads back to Mars with Atra for his group's new mission at the end of Season 1. Season 2 resolve this where Kudelia stayed on Mars for a duration of the show because of her work while Atra has been with Mikazuki for most of the time. When Mikazuki became paralyzed, Atra requests Kudelia to have a baby with him as Someone to Remember Him By but Kudelia lets her do it. Eventually, Atra did become pregnant with Mikazuki and in the epilogue, she and Kudelia raised their son, Akatsuki.
  • In the second half of GUN×SWORD, Van is surrounded by an unwanted harem, with Pricilla and Wendy making a triangle as the main competitors for his interest. But the most significant triangle for him is the one involving himself, his dead fiancee Elena, and his most important love interest: Wendy. Meanwhile, Wendy is also involved in a triangle with Joshua, whom Yukiko seems to like too. It's not clear whether Wendy even realizes that Joshua has a crush on her, though.
  • Hayate the Combat Butler: Hayate is pursued unrequitedly by both Hanagiku and Nishizawa; Nishizawa also wants Hanagiku. Of course, this being a Harem Series, there's a much larger Love Dodecahedron involved.
  • In Hekikai no AiON, Sheila is in love with Tatsuya who was the only one aside Ariel that doesn't treat her like crap but he rejects her because he's already in love with Action Girl Seine who does not correspond to his feelings. Did I mention the two girls are enemies?
  • Hello! Sandybell: Mark has had eyes for Sandybell ever since she stumbled upon the Wellington castle (and their fateful encounter at the garden). Unfortunately, Kitty Shearer also likes Mark, and tries to steer him and Sandybell away from each other by trying to ruin Sandybell's reputation. When this doesn't work, Kitty resorts to being a plain bully to her.
  • Honey and Clover has two main love triangles (and a third one in a flashback): Takemoto and Morita both fall in love at first sight with Hagu, who is oblivious to their feelings; Yamada is in love with Mayama, who in turn is in love with an older woman named Rika; in the flashback, Shuu was in love with Rika, who was married to Harada (who was Shuu's best friend and died in an accident). In the end, Hagu does not return Takemoto's feelings and instead falls for Morita, but she chooses to stay with Shuu (her uncle) because she believes he'll be able to take care of her better; this love triangle is left unresolved and open-ended because although Hagu chooses to stay with Shuu, she is still very much in love with Morita and vice versa. Mayama wins Rika over, and Yamada is implied to find a new love in Nomiya, a guy who she works with and ends up helping Yamada come to terms with her unrequited feelings for Mayama. While Rika felt mutually about Shuu in the past, they decided it was best for them to stay apart because Harada's death made both of them emotionally unstable (after it is implied that Shuu almost pushes Rika off of a rooftop because he believed that the Rika, who became depressed over Harada's death, would probably be much happier with her.
  • Horimiya: Hori and Miyamura are dating, Miyamura and Sawada have a brother-sister dynamic, and Sawada has a crush on Hori. Hori was annoyed watching Miyamura and Sawada compete over her and basically forced them to hang out and get along.
  • Ichinensei Ni Nacchattara: Three ~7 year olds: Miho —> Touta —> Iori. Iori, secretly a genderbent highschooler, wants no part of it.
  • The manga Ichiroh! gives us main character Nanako as the vertex, with both her childhood friend Shino and her brother unwantedly pursuing her. Nanako is painfully aware of their feelings, but can't seem to discourage either of them, leaving the two to fight between each other for her.
  • If I See You In My Dreams: Masuo Fuguno loves Nagisa Shiozaki, who reciprocates but has trouble admitting it out loud. Meanwhile, Miho Hamaoka is in love with Masuo but he only sees her as a friend.
  • In I'm Gonna Be an Angel!, the main triangle involves Noelle who loves Yuusuke, who loves Natsumi, who obsesses over her dead brother. Also, on the villain side, Muse loves Eros, who loves Silky, who... fixates on Noelle. And a bit more complicated one, Raphael loves Mikael who is interested in Noelle, who loves Yuusuke. Later subverted when it turns out Mikael was in love with Raphael all along.
  • Inuyasha:
    • Male lead Inuyasha was in love with Kikyo in the past, before they were both attacked by Naraku and tricked into trying to kill each other. Centuries later, Kikyo was reincarnated as female lead Kagome, who also falls for Inuyasha—in a very Belligerent Sexual Tension way—then a witch pulled part of her soul out to resurrect Kikyo in a golem body, creating a triangle between him and the two women. The resurrected Kikyo eventually dies again, and at the end of the series, Kagome decides to stay in the past permanently and marries Inuyasha.
    • During early chapters, Kagome flirts with and even goes on a date with her Dogged Nice Guy classmate Hojo while she and Inuyasha are in one of their "belligerent" phases, but realizes her thoughts are still with Inuyasha and leaves the date. Hojo mistakenly thinks she's having a flareup—her grandfather has been covering her absences by claiming she's Delicate and Sickly—and lets her go, and disappears from the series afterwards.
    • Wolf demon Kouga also pursues Kagome trying to make him her mate. She doesn't return his feelings.
    • Naraku in turn also wants Kikyo, since he was spawned from a wounded bandit whom Kikyo treated and grew to lust after her.
  • In Itazura Na Kiss, male nurse Keita has feelings for Kotoko, who is already married to Naoki, who for the first time gets jealous and it almost ruined their marriage. Husband and wife eventually patch up their relationship and Keita finds someone else.
  • Kaguya-sama: Love Is War has two of these, though neither of them include the main couple.
    • Kashiwagi and Tsubasa start dating early in the series, both unaware that Kashiwagi's best friend Maki has had a crush on Tsubasa for a long time. A big part of Maki's character is trying to stay loyal to her best friend while dealing with insane jealousy.
    • Ishigami ends up developing a crush on Tsubame after the sports festival, and Miko in turn falls in love with him during the culture festival (but remains unaware of her own feelings). Tsubame likes Ishigami as a friend at the very least, but she isn't sure if she wants a relationship with him which isn't helped by her Commitment Issues due to her previous boyfriend cheating on her.
  • Kaitou Saint Tail was in love with Asuka Jr, but so was Rina.
  • Kashimashi: Girl Meets Girl is so centrally about a Love Triangle (with additional hangers-on to the point of Unwanted Harem-ness) that the opening credits show A, B, and C standing on a triangle. Also, chapter 7 of the manga is titled "Girl Triangle".
  • Kaze no Shōjo Emily: Perry has had a crush on Emily ever since she moved to New Moon and taught him how to read and write, but Emily has feelings for her classmate Teddy. Unbeknownst to her Teddy likes her back. Emily's best friend Ilse also has a crush on Perry, but Cannot Spit It Out until they're adults - the Distant Finale shows that Emily and Teddy are married, while Ilse and Perry have become an item.
  • Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple has a minor one between Kenichi, Miu, and Renka, although it's fairly obvious that Renka doesn't have much of a shot. Later on, there's also a possibility of a Kenichi, Miu, and Shigure triangle.
  • Kimagure Orange Road: Hikaru Hiyama wants her "darling," Kyosuke Kasuga, who thinks of her as a younger friend or a complete annoyance (depending on the situation). Kyosuke, in turn, is very interested in the cool and standoff-ish Madoka Ayukawa, the first girl he met when he moved to his current neighborhood. Madoka feels the same about Kyosuke, she just doesn't always show it. However, she also agreed early on to help Hikaru get with Kyosuke.
  • There are currently three love triangles in Kimi ni Todoke: Sawako/Kazehaya/Kurumi, Ryu/Chizuru/Tooru, and Kazehaya/Sawako/Kent. All 'Bettys' win in the end.
  • Kiri no Mori Hotel has a typical Type 7 relationship in the case of Yui, Makio and Akira. She loves both men and they love her, but she has to make a decision which of them she wants to stay with.
  • In the second Kujibiki♡Unbalance there is a love triangle between Chihiro, Tokino, and Ritsuko. This does not apply to the first version since in that version, Ritsuko is the only one that has any romantic involvement with Chihiro. However, due to it being only 3 episode out the supposed 26, it may be possible that there was some kind of love triangle and Ritsuko simply won in the end.
  • In Love Hina, Keitaro is looking for the girl who he promised to marry when he was five years old. The thing is Naru and Mutsumi have liked him since he was five and he doesn't remember which is the girl he made the promise with. Naru doesn't believe she's the girl because she was only two years old when Keitaro made said promise, so she tries to push him and Mutsumi together despite her own feelings for Keitaro. But Mutsumi instead wants Naru to have Keitaro because she wants to see both of them be happy together. Turns out Naru is indeed the true promised girl, because five-year-old Mutsumi lost a game of rock paper scissors on purpose so that Naru would be the one to marry Keitaro.
  • A Love Triangle is practically a requirement for a Macross show. Each and every installment has featured one.
    • Macross 7 is notable in that Mylene has a dedicated, loyal suitor in Gamlin, yet is unable to decide between his obvious affection and the brash emotional personality of Basara, who by all indications isn't even aware of her potential feelings for him and generally irritates her more often than not. And besides that, Basara's not only attracted the obvious romantic attention of a biker girl secondary character, but is locked in a pseudo-love triangle over the Enigmatic Minion Sivil, with his competition being The Dragon of the series' first half, Gigil.
    • In stark contrast, the love triangle in the original Super Dimension Fortress Macross, involving Hikaru, Misa, and Minmay is among the most well done examples of one. The three of them are portrayed as having flaws and pros as well as Character Development, and when Hikaru ultimately chooses Misa, Minmay takes it rather maturely.
    • In a change of pace, Macross Plus had Two Guys and a Girl: Isamu, Myung and Guld. It's... horribly complicated. When Guld discovers exactly how complicated it is and how a good part of the problems are rooted in his behavior, he chooses to go the Redemption Equals Death way, and Isamu and Myung get together.
    • Macross Zero has one between Shin and sisters Sara and Mao. However, this is downplayed in their case; Mao is never depicted as having a realistic chance with the signfiicantly older Shin, and the story focuses far more significantly on Shin and Sara's relationship.
    • One of the more audacious ones is the triangle from Macross Frontier shown in the page image, where Alto gets the attention of Idol Singers Sheryl and Ranka. What's audacious about it is that, despite dispensing GALLONS upon GALLONS of Ship Tease so that it could've gone either way, the Love Triangle is never resolved in the original show. Every subsequent iteration nonetheless features the Love Triangle quite strongly (and some actually end it):
    • Macross Delta has one between Hayate, his wingwoman Mirage, and up-and-coming alien Idol Singer Freyja. However, like its predecessor Zero, Delta focuses far more on the relationship between Hayate and Freyja which left Mirage on the sidelines (with Word of God confirming they initially wanted to do without the Love Triangle before Executive Meddling forced them to add one in). Unsurprisingly in the end, Hayate chooses Freyja. The movie adaptations Avert this trope; Mirage and Hayate's relationship is almost entirely Adapted Out due to Mirage herself being Demoted to Extra.
  • There is a complex relationship dynamic going on between Nanoha, Subaru, and Teana in Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha Striker S: Subaru is Nanoha's biggest Fangirl (following a Heroic Fire Rescue that turned her life around) and is about as straight as a rainbow for Teana, her longtime partner and soulmate. Teana will never admit liking that baka Subaru and simultaneously has a Rage Against the Mentor-turned-Rivalry relationship with Nanoha, who seems to acknowledge said rivalry (if ViVid is any indication, the two of them still have a bone to pick over who is better at Shooting magic) but does not pay much mind to Subaru's fangirling beyond encouraging her to follow her dreams (which boil down to being more like Nanoha, anyway). And just to make the parallels between Subaru's relationships with Nanoha and Teana more blatant, Sound Stage X has Teana rescue Subaru by creating a Dungeon Bypass in a manner very similar to her aforementioned Heroic Fire Rescue by Nanoha.
  • In Magical × Miracle, in the last chapter, it is revealed that Vaith has a crush on General Lenolora, who has a Vitriolic Best Buds version of an Patient Childhood Love Interest-type relationship with Yue, but while the friendship is mutual, the love is (probably) unrequited, given Yue's Heroic BSoD at the news.
  • In Martian Successor Nadesico where our main hero, Akito, is practically pummelled by affection by nearly every female character in the show, the main contenders being Yurika, Megumi, and Ryoko. Yurika has the distinct advantage of having known him at some point during their childhood, but her attempts to impress him are in vain for the most part. He actually appears to be going steady with Megumi in the 4th episode, which concludes with them kissing and walking along holding hands in mutual affection. However, their mutual attraction seems to begin and end there, as the Clingy Jealous Girl routine disqualified her later when she tried to move their relationship into adult territory. Ryoko is a more subtle contender in that she has strong feelings for him, but doesn't actively seek him out due to her pride. In any case, she seems to have garnered more attention from him than either of the other females (albeit not enough for him to see her as much more than a friend). Also, he does develop feelings for Yurika at some point, though her Clingy Jealous Girl antics are what kept the romantic flame stunted throughout the series. He winds up with her at the end as a result of finally caving in to his (somewhat coerced) feelings for her.
  • Mazinger Z: Kouji likes Sayaka, Sayaka likes Kouji, and Kouji's best friend Boss likes Sayaka. In Great Mazinger Boss has a crush on Jun, who is in love with Tetsuya, who likes Jun but is completely oblivious to her feelings. It does not stop him of getting angry and acting territorial when Boss sends gifts to Jun, though. In UFO Robo Grendizer, Maria's arrival gave birth to the Sayaka/Kouji/Maria: both girls are in love with him, and Kouji is oblivious to it. Likewise you had the short-lived Hikaru/Duke/Rubina triangle: both girls liked Duke and Duke had feelings for both.
  • Maison Ikkoku:
    • Godai and Mitaka are both pursuing the beautiful young widow Kyoko, but she's still mourning her husband.
    • Kozue is dating Godai who is too wishy-washy to break up with her, while he pines over Kyoko.
  • Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch had Lucia, who was Kaito's girlfriend, but then Michel took Kaito's memory, leaving him open to Michal, who was Michel's symbiote. Meanwhile, Lucia's trying to find Kaito, and when she does, get him back.
  • Two triangles develop around Judy in the last third of My Daddy Long Legs. First, there's the Judy-Jimmie-Julia triangle. Then there's the more significant Jimmie-Judy-Jervis triangle. Judy chooses Jervis; she never seems to have had romantic feelings towards Jimmie at all. (This is how it was in the books too)
  • My-HiME:
    • My-HiME anime: Takeda has unrequited feelings toward Natsuki, who is (implied to eventually return Shizuru's feelings). In the ending, despite Mai and Yuuichi becoming a couple, Reito and Shiho are still persisting in their attempts to get together wtih the partner they desire.
    • My-HiME manga: Yuuichi is sought after by Mai and Natsuki, since he is the "Key" to both of their HiME powers. Eventually, Shiho also tries to claim him. Meanwhile, Takeda unsuccessfully pursues Natsuki.
    • In My-Otome, Arika is pursued by both Nina and Sergay.
  • Naruto:
    • Mainly the Naruto/Sakura/Sasuke love triangle. Naruto has a crush on Sakura, who loves Sasuke.
Shonen Jump Question: Naruto and Sasuke kiss (accidentally) in the first chapter where they appear together. Does this add a special dimension to their rivalry?
Masashi Kishimoto Answer: I didn't have any particular reason for it, other than to surprise readers. I mainly did it because I don't think there has ever been a manga where two rivals kissed. Also, by having this encounter, it was easier to set up the love triangle: Sakura, who had intended to be the first one to kiss Sasuke, has it stolen by her rival Naruto, Sasuke and Naruto are rivals, so there's and added tension there. And so on and so forth.
    • Naruto/Hinata/Sakura to a lesser extent, with Hinata loving Naruto. And Rock Lee loves Sakura and has every intention of beating Naruto for her affections.
    • Sakura/Ino/Sasuke in Part 1, with Ino liking Sasuke too, leading into a rivalry with Sakura.
    • Lee in Part 1 could be thrown in too with the Naruto/Sakura/Sasuke love triangle, with him also having a crush on Sakura.
    • Kakashi/Rin/Obito. Obito loved Rin, who loved Kakashi, who cared for her not romantically, leading to a messy but brief love triangle and specially after Rin was turned into an Apocalypse Maiden and chose a Suicide by Cop... with Kakashi as the cop. Not only Kakashi was terribly traumatized, but Obito witnessed it and that weas his Start of Darkness.
    • The Distant Finale and the 10th movie finally resolve the main triangle, with Naruto marrying Hinata and Sakura having a daughter with Sasuke.
  • Natsuyuki Rendezvous: The widow is mutual with both her husband's ghost and her new man.
  • Negima! Magister Negi Magi: Setsuna has a Bodyguard Crush on Konoka, but the Ax-Crazy Tsukuyomi has the serious hots for Setsuna who only finds her creepy. It's heavily implied (but not confirmed) that Setsuna and Konoka get married in 2017, even though they never manage to get Tsukuyomi off their backs unfortunately.
  • Neon Genesis Evangelion: Asuka/Shinji/Rei. Shinji deeply cares for both girls but he does not believe anybody could love him. Asuka likes Shinji, but she has a hard time admitting it to herself, partially because when she flirts with him, he is clueless, making her believing he is not interested in her. And Rei does not know/realizes her own feelings and the fact of being Shinji's mother's clone is, no doubt, a complicating factor.
  • Nisekoi: Raku has a crush on Kosaki, who reciprocates but is too shy to tell him her feelings. Raku's yakuza family sets him up with Chitoge, the daughter of a gangster boss, to stop a gang war from breaking out. At first, Raku and Chitoge hate each other, but their relationship gets friendlier over time and Chitoge ends up falling in love with Raku, who still likes Kosaki despite growing to like Chitoge just as much. At the end, Kosaki does confess to Raku, but he rejects her because he has realized he loves Chitoge way more.
  • The main 'couple' of Ojisan And Marshmallow, as such, is Owakabayashi-san and Hige-san. A couple of episodes introduces a new coworker that wants Hige-san for herself....
  • There are a few standard love triangles in Onidere, but a hilarious one occurs between Tadashii (the boy), Saya (his girlfriend), and "Angie" (Saya again, wearing a Paper-Thin Disguise). To add to the hilarity, Tadashii sees through Saya's disguise immediately, and is so incredibly confused.
  • Ouran High School Host Club:
    • The "main" love triangle in bottles down to Tamaki and Hikaru for Haruhi. This does get resolved... in favor of Tamaki, on the final chapters of the manga. Although the Anime version left it ambiguous.
    • There is Haruhi-Kaoru-Hikaru. Haruhi likes the twins (platonically though), both twins are in love with her and the brothers love each other just as much. It breaks when Kaoru willingly gives up his love so Hikaru can have a real shot at getting Haruhi's attention.
    • Kyoya's English voice actor thinks Kyoya is in this type of scenario as the A with Tamaki and Haruhi as the B and C, and that Kyoya is okay with this, and would rather see them happy with each other than be with either himself.
  • Penguin Revolution: Yuzuru Narazaki, Yukari Fujimaru, and Ryo Katsuragi, first professionally (Yukari is Ryo's manager, and Yuzuru stages a very determined campaign to convince her to become his manager instead) and then romantically, with the added twist that as far as Yuzuru knows, Yukari is a man.
  • Prétear had a Love Triangle in the Backstory (Sasame-Takako-Hayate), although it isn't revealed until much later. Then there is Mawata's crush on Sasame — and Sasame, depending on the adaptation, either likes Himeno (who likes Hayate), or still loves Takako, enough to betray his friends and join her.
  • Pretty Cure:
    • In HeartCatch Pretty Cure!, Tsubomi and Erika help out inspiring mangaka Ban with an love triangle... in his doujinshi about the Cures - in his story, Blossom had fallen in love with a handsome man (who looks like a fusion of Ban and Itsuki) and Marine has opted to help her. However, she ends up falling in love with him as well. It's this situation that puts him at Writer's Block. Tsubomi and Erika act out the perfect ending - the two girls confront each other and decide that their friendship and duty is more important than one guy.
    • HappinessCharge Pretty Cure! had one between Megumi, Seiji and Blue (with Hime coming in for an episode or two) It went completely nowhere - Blue fell in love with another and Megumi and Seiji just went the "Just Friends" route.
  • Princess Tutu: Ahiru has a crush on Mytho, but he's in a relationship with Rue. However, with his heart coming back together, he falls for Princess Tutu, who is Ahiru. This in turn, causes Rue to turn evil. It's also implied but never stated that Fakir may have fallen in love with Ahiru. At the end, Mytho chooses Rue as his bride while Ahiru and Fakir stay together, but the latter two can't be a romantic couple because Ahiru is now stuck in duck form permanently.
  • Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Sayaka loves Kamijou. So does Hitomi. Like many other tropes in the series, it gets deconstructed. Wanting to be fair to her friend, Hitomi gives Sayaka the chance to ask Kamijou out first, but she doesn't because she has just found out she's now a magical girl lich because of her contract with Kyubey. Sayaka then realizes she sold her soul to heal Kamijou's hand and hear him play the violin again, but she got nothing of what she really wanted in return and she let Hitomi take him for herself. All the stress and despair causes Sayaka to snap and become a witch.
  • Purple Eyes in the Dark has a Type 4 relationship between Rinko, Shinya and Odagiri. Rinko and Shinya are both in love with each other, but Odagiri is a third wheel and wants Rinko. More out of a desire to sleep with her than love.
  • Queen Millennia: Near the end, it turns out Daisuke Yamori has killed Caveman Soff (Hajime's ancestor) to be with Yayoi and somehow failed. Mirai believes he still has feelings for her, but it's barely followed on.
  • Queen's Blade: Hide & Seek has an incestuous triangle between the Vance sisters. The eldest daughter, Claudette, is in love with her youngest sister, Elina. Elina is in love with/lusts after her middle sister, Leina, but also has closeted feelings for her eldest sister, Claudette. Leina is in love with neither of them, but supports Elina and Claudette's feelings for each other.
  • Tatewaki Kuno in Ranma ½ crushes on both Ranma (as a girl) and Akane, who are the Official Couple.
  • Re:Zero: Subaru falls in love with Emilia from the moment he laid eyes on her, but she doesn't return his feelings because she doesn't understand romantic love. Even though he intended to stay committed to Emilia, Subaru begins to have feelings for Rem as well, after she gives up her life to save him and confesses her love to him throughout several of his loops. Rem makes Subaru admit he loves her too and she tells him she's fine with becoming his second wife after he marries Emilia. Subaru accepts Rem's proposal, but things get complicated when he tries to tell Emilia about his Polyamory plan and he finds out Emilia doesn't even remember who Rem is. Subaru then finds out Rem got attacked by Ley Batenkaitos, who erased Rem from everyone's memories and put her in a coma. Subaru still loves Rem and wants her to wake up, but when she finally does, their relationship can't go back to how it was since Rem is still missing her memories.
  • Reborn! (2004) has our protagonist Tsuna and his two tagalong girlfriends Kyoko and Haru. Haru is hopelessly in love with Tsuna and Tsuna is in love with Kyoko; however, Tsuna's relationship with both girls seem to lack so much significance that most of the fandom doesn't really care much for Tsuna's relationship with either of the two girls.
  • Rebuild World: Sheryl falls in Dogged Nice Girl love with Akira, Katsuya falls in love with Sheryl, and Akira shows so much Sugar-and-Ice Personality variation with Sheryl it can be hard to tell while in a Fake Relationship with her. There is an additional factor that makes this triangle twisted (besides Sheryl's possible Stockholm Syndrome): Sheryl is merely exploiting Katsuya in a Honey Trap to impress Akira. However, by the time this triangle fully materializes, it quickly heads towards a resolution: after seeing the other two together drives Katsuya into a Freak Out, Akira kills Katsuya in in self-defense using a Batman Gambit based on Sheryl's information on Katsuya's weaknesses.
  • Recovery of an MMO Junkie: Moriko is attracted to both Sakurai and Koiwai (but the former moreso). Sakurai and Koiwai are good friends and co-workers. Koiwai does find Moriko attractive and asks her out on dates, but he's playing Shipper on Deck for her and Sakurai and the dates are usually just attempts to get the two of them together.
  • Revolutionary Girl Utena:
    • Ruka, Shiori and Juri engage in a messy one in. It turns Ruka into a Manipulative Bastard for a short while trying to resolve it. It works.
    • Utena, Anthy, and Akio are a three-way tug of war, except with more incest.
    • Kozue is in love with her brother Miki who is in love with Anthy. Anthy manipulates Miki but doesn't return his feelings and it eventually leads to Kozue and Anthy making out in a car in front of him.
  • RIN-NE: The two main triangles are between Rinne, Sakura, Tsubasa and Rinne, Ageha, Sakura. Rinne and Tsubasa like Sakura (Sakura's feelings are unclear at this point) and Ageha crushes on Rinne who only tolerates her.
  • Rosario + Vampire plays with this a bit. Yukari is into both Tsukune and Moka, who are pretty much an Official Couple. Her plan is to push them that last mile and get in on the action.
  • Sailor Moon:
    • Mina falls in love with two men named Jack and Charlie and is trying to sneak back and forth through two dates with them at once. Why is it averted? Because Jack and Charlie are really Tiger's Eye and Hawk's Eye, competing with each other over who gets to look into Mina's dream mirror.
    • In R, Usagi and Mamoru are in love. Prince Diamond is blinded by his very Yandere love for Usagi, which makes Emerald jealous as she is in love with Diamond. Furthermore, it is hinted Sapphire was in love with Emerald, given his suspicions about Wiseman causing her death. Although Prizma and Sapphire used to be an item. Rei Hino also crushes on both Usaki and Mamoru.
  • Sakura Trick has one that's Played for Laughs: Mitsuki likes Haruka, who's in a relationship with Yuu.
  • Deconstructed in the anime version of School Days, which appears at the beginning to be a light-hearted High School romantic comedy. Then Boy (possibly) gets Girl A (who he is dating) pregnant, which causes him to become an absolute Jerkass and start sleeping around. Girl A murders Boy, then Girl B (who Boy was dating but never got around to breaking up with, stringing her alone as he dates Girl A and Girl B gets atrociously broken) finds the body and confronts and murders Girl A. Girl B then decapitates the Boy's corpse, takes the head and relaxes on a nice boat with it. However, the original Visual Novel can play this very differently...
  • School Days: The Anime of the Game adapts one route of a Visual Novel with Multiple Endings. In the beginning Makoto and Sekai are childhood friends, and Makoto has a crush on Kotonoha. (And Sekai has a secret crush on Makoto.) Sekai helps Makoto and Kotohona get together, though Sekai is a Yandere for Kotohona. When Sekai and Makoto take their relationship to another level, however, things go bad and then get worse. Much, much worse.
  • Some of the sub triangles of School Rumble. Harima is too focused in his love with Tenma and is unaware of Eri's and Yakumo's feelings. Eri has some kind of rivalry with Yakuno, but it's a friendly one. Tenma, meanwhile, wants Karasuma.
  • Scryed had one between Ryuho, Mimori, and Scheris (which was part of a Love Dodecahedron if you take Kazuma and Straight Cougar into account!) In an ironic turn of events it ends with Scheris dead, leaving Ryuho and Mimori to possibly hook up, but Ryuho refusing to accept Mimori's advances and using Scheris dying because of her love for him as the reasoning for this. Scheris must have been laughing in her grave.
  • Sekai-ichi Hatsukoi: Yuu is in love with Chiaki yet Chiaki fails to notice Yuu's not-so-subtle feelings for him while he is in a not-so-stable relationship with Yoshiyuki. Doesn't help that their relationship began after Yoshiyuki brutally raped Chiaki—although this was downplayed to just a forced kiss in the anime (as far as it shows). Chiaki and Yoshiyuki have stayed together due to them being co-dependent on each other, yet break into frequent arguments and accuse each other of cheating. And Yuu takes the brunt of Yoshiyuki's jealousy and Chiaki's insensitivity. Of course, Yuu was not perfect either, but he sure had a lot of crap thrown at him. Well, this is a deconstruction of a Love Triangle.
  • Yuki, Natsu and Kaho in SEX, though despite the existence of romantic feelings it seems to remain fairly platonic/innocent for the time being. (Ironically, considering the title of the manga, nothing sexual happens, aside of flirting.)
  • On Sgt. Frog, Tamama (A) vies constantly with Angol Moa (B) for the attention of Keroro (C), who seems somewhat oblivious of Tamama's semi-platonic jealousy and Moa's crush. Sgt. Frog even has a scenario with both types of Love Triangle rolled into one: Giroro (A) and Koyuki (B) both have a crush on Natsumi (C), who has a crush on Saburo (D). Unlike most of those, the triangles aren't central to the plot of the series. Another one involves Giroro's kitty Miss Furbottom (A), Giroro (B), and Natsumi (C). The narrator is quick to lampshade it.
  • In Shugo Chara! the sub-plot seems to be Amu's love triangle. Ikuto and Tadase are both in love with Amu, but Amu loves Tadase. In the manga Amu says that she fell in love with his outer-character. Amu also seems to develop feelings for Ikuto as the story continues. Only Ikuto and Tadase kind of hate each other.
  • In Slam Dunk, Sakuragi is in love with Haruko, who is in love with Rukawa (who doesn't seems to be interested in anything but basketball).
  • A minor but still important triangle exists in Slayers between heroine Lina, her swordsman partner Gourry, and Sylphiel, a priestess and old friend of Gourry's. In this case, it's mostly one-sided, because not only is Gourry dense towards Sylphiel's feelings, he openly gains affection for Lina as time passes.
  • Snow White with the Red Hair: Shirayuki and Zen are in a relationship and Obi confesses that he loves Shirayuki and makes a more ambiguous confession of "liking" Zen. The fact that he ends up frequently staring at Zen and flirts with him constantly to see him flustered makes this like less ambiguous. He refuses to come between them as he is dedicated to their happiness and safety.
  • The main love triangle in Star Driver involves the main protagonist Takuto, the heroine Wako, and Wako's arranged fiancé and childhood friend Sugata. Sugata is devoted to Wako but doesn't seem to mind the fact that Takuto and Wako are gradually becoming closer, Takuto and Wako show an interest in each other in spite of the engagement circumstances, and Wako seems to harbor strong feelings for Sugata than one would predict (and she is a Yaoi Fangirl for Takuto/Sugata) — make of what you will with that. Nevertheless, the love triangle is even lampshaded in an episode, where Takuto wonders if they were all really friends or if he was only a "third wheel" to a "couple." The final episode has Wako confirm that she's in love with both - and that's its difficult to choose between the two of them; so much she briefly wishes that Takuto had never come.
  • Steel Angel Kurumi is a strange one. Steel Angels are imprinted on masters via a kiss, thus, Kurumi is infatuated with Nakahito when he accidentally awakens her. Kurumi tries to get Nakahito to do the same to Saki after she loses power, but grows jealous, shoved him aside and does it herself, thus Saki is infatuated with Kurumi but Kurumi doesn’t realize this. When Karinka enters the picture, she also kisses Nakahito and ends up infatuated with him, leading to a rivalry between her and Kurumi.
  • The Story Between a Dumb Prefect and a High School Girl with an Inappropriate Skirt Length: Akina and Sukegawa are both attracted to Izubuchi, who's Oblivious to Love.
  • Super Robot Wars Original Generation series, has Mai Kobayashi, and Latooni Subota both going after Ryuusei Date. Who does Ryuu love? Latooni's giant robot. That, or Lune's giant robot. Or Lamia's. Or maybe Aya's once it got equipped with a skirt...
  • Tamako Market has a bisexual one between Mochizou (male) and Midori (female) towards Tamako, particularly fleshed out in episode 5.
  • In Tenchi Muyo!, both Ayeka and Ryoko love Tenchi, and he loves them back. They also hate each other, and constantly scheme to be his sole possessor. Tenchi, for his part, successfully navigates his two relationships, keeping the two in a balance in which neither decides not being with him at all would be better than sharing him.
  • The initial triangle in Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann of Simon/Kamina/Yoko leads to a very tragic outcome.
  • Rito, Lala and Haruna from To Love Ru become a group relationship at the very end of the original series.
  • Tokyo Crazy Paradise has one with Akira, Ryuji, and Tsukasa. Possibly with Asago, Tsukasa, and Ryuji.
  • In Tokyo Ghoul:Re, Kanae is the Ignored Enamored Underling to his cousin, Tsukiyama. In turn, Tsukiyama has spent the last three years completely wrapped up in Kaneki and is completely oblivious to Kanae's feelings for him. Kaneki has become Amnesiac Hero Sasaki, and doesn't recognize Tsukiyama at all when they reunite. This results in various attempts by Kanae to Murder the Hypotenuse, and Eto showing up to exploit his increasingly unstable emotional state for her own purposes.
  • In Tokyo Mew Mew, Ichigo has Aoyama as her love interest and eventual boyfriend, but she also has a Stalker with a Crush in the form of her alien enemy Quiche. Her boss Shirogane is also implied to have feelings for her.
  • In Touch (1981), Kazuya Uesugi is in love with his and his brother Tatsuya's childhood friend Minami Asakura, who has feelings for Tatsuya and thinks of Kazuya as a friend.

  • Zero, Yuuki, and Kaname from Vampire Knight. Sooooorrta resolved in the end. Kaname ends up in a coma, Yuuki marries Zero and they raise their own child as well as Yuuki and Kaname's kid, Zero dies of natural causes, and once everything's resolved Yuuki sacrifices herself to revive Kaname.
  • The Vision of Escaflowne, a spiritual successor to Macross, (as stated by Shoji Kawamori) was not without its share. The principle triangle involving Van Fanel, Hitomi Kanzaki, and Allen Shezar. It may reach Love Dodecahedron if we consider Marlene (Allen's first love and the mom of his illegitimate kid Chid), Millerna (Marlene's little sister who crushes on Allen hard) and Dryden (Millerna's arranged boyfriend).
  • Voltes V: Belgan is attracted to Katherine, but she finds him repulsive, in part because he's a huge misogynist (claiming "women have no place fighting in wars"). Belgan can clearly see that Katherine has a thing for Heinel, and mutters his displeasure at it. While Heinel obviously likes Katherine in return, he'll never admit it.
Katherine: "Thank you for saving my life, Heinel"
Heinel: "Katherine. I did not do it because I cared about you! I only did it because you come from a noble family, and if you died, it'd look bad on my end."
  • In the animated adaptation of White Album 2, just like in the VN (see below), there's the Setsuna - Haruki - Kazusa love triangle. The winner? No one. Not even Haruki.
  • In Xam'd: Lost Memories, there's the hero Akiyuki, his best friend Furuichi, and their mutual love interest Haru.
  • Subverted in ×××HOLiC, where Watanuki only thinks he's in a Love Triangle with Himawari (C) and Doumeki (A or B). In reality, Domeki and Himawari aren't particularly interested in each other romantically at all. In fact, the person Domeki and Himawari are both interested in is quite likely Watanuki himself... this actually makes this instance a rather interesting example of becoming a Double Subversion. And then the Love Triangle is turned on its head when Yuuko vanishes, and she's the one Watanuki is endlessly pining for instead while Doumeki remains as loyal to him as ever. Meanwhile, the situation becomes such that Himawari can only see Watanuki in person once a year and winds up married to someone else. And Doumeki marries his and Watanuki's common friend Kohane Tsuyuri, who's also hinted to be in love with Watanuki, presumably to comfort each other and have descendants that will keep Watanuki company after their deaths.
  • Yona of the Dawn: All 3 of Hak, Jaeha and Kija are shown to have romantic feelings for protagonist Yona, and for much of the series, each of the men appear to be a Hopeless Suitor. Character Development leads to Yona starting to return Hak's feelings, and while they aren't a couple yet, it appears to be heading that way very soon. This leaves Jaeha and Kija in the place of unrequited love, though they consider Hak a good friend of theirs and make a conscious effort not to get between the two.
  • Your Lie in April: Kousei has a crush on Kaori, who seems to like his friend Watari instead. Meanwhile, Kousei's childhood friend Tsubaki realizes she has a crush on him after getting jealous of Kaori. Kousei chooses Kaori, but she dies after a complication for her surgery and he only finds out after her death that she loves him and not Watari. Tsubaki is still gunning for Kousei, but he's still mourning for Kaori's death.
  • Yu-Gi-Oh!:
    • In Yu-Gi-Oh! (the manga more so than the anime, anyways), Téa/Anzu is in love with Atem, Yugi is in love with Téa/Anzu, whilst Atem has no romantic feelings for either of them: only extreme loyalty to Yugi and friendship towards Téa/Anzu.
    • In Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, Yubel loves Jaden and insists that Jesse has stolen Jaden’s love away from them. Jesse and Jaden have a metric fuckton of chemistry together. And once Jaden regains his memories of his past, he realizes he loves Yubel. And in a sense did when he was a child, though not (yet) in the romantic sense, since he sent them into space to try to heal them of their insanity.
    • In Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds, there's a Gender Flipped version with Ushio, who likes Mikage, who likes Jack, who likes Carly.
  • An interesting variation in Yurara. Yako and Mei are both in love with Yurara. However, Yurara, thanks to her Guardian Spirit, can transform into a superpowered alter ego, with a slightly different personality. And it so happens that Mei is in love with "regular" Yurara, who is falling for him in return, while Yako has feelings for "Guardian" Yurara, who can't stand Mei and loves Yako instead.
  • Yuri is My Job!:
    • Mitsuki and Kanoko are both in love with Hime, who says she'll never fall in love with anyone despite apparently being set up with Mitsuki. In a twist, while Kanoko feels threatened by Mitsuki's closeness to Hime, she has no intention of confessing her love to Hime, wanting to see Hime as special to her, even if it's only as a friend. Later on, Sumika starts developing feelings for Kanoko, who only goes to her to vent about her jealousy of Hime's closeness to Mitsuki, which makes Sumika jealous of Hime.
    • In the backstory, there was a triangle with Sumika, Nene and Yoko. Sumika and Nene were Schwestern at the salon, but Sumika didn't view their relationship as romantic. Yoko then arrived and seduced Nene, who started ignoring Sumika and made Yoko into her new schwester, only to get dumped by Yoko at the end. It's later revealed Nene was actually in love with Sumika and originally hooked up with Yoko in an attempt to make Sumika jealous. Nene did develop real feelings for Yoko, but Yoko only saw dating Nene as a game to mess with Sumika.
  • YuruYuri: Kyouko is interested in both Childhood Friend Yui and Mirakurun-lookalike Chinatsu (although it's more lust than love). Chinatsu in turn is head over heels in love with Yui, while Yui doesn't show any such feelings to anyone and is happy with being friends with both.
