Characters who are a Little Bit Beastly in Anime and Manga.

More than one type:

  • One of the many "human" species in A Centaur's Life are the "Long Ear" people, who are essentially this trope. Cat people seems to be the most common variation, but there are others as well.
  • Everyone in Dog Days (three examples of which are displayed on the main page) is a kemonomimi, save for the four humans. It goes to mention that everyone refers to themselves as humans. The animal species' in particular seem to be divided as like ethnicities; There is a nation of Dog-people, a nation of Cat-people, Squirrel-people, Bunny-people, etc.
  • Doraemon: Nobita's Chronicles of the Moon Exploration introduces the Espals, a race of Human Aliens whose sole discerning features are their animal-like ears, most of them being rabbits but some having canine or feline ears as well. One of them named Luca shows up in Nobita's class posing as a transfer student, and was never seen without his cap until much later in the story when he removes his headwear and reveal his alien identity to the gang.
  • Gugure! Kokkuri-san:
    • Kokkuri the kitsune usually appears as a human with fox ears and tail.
    • Inugami the dog youkai gains a tail and ears only when in female form, for obvious reasons.
  • Gun-Ota ga Mahou Sekai ni Tensei Shitara...: The Beast Man races are all mostly human with only minor animal traits, like tails and animal ears.
  • Most demons in Helck are just animalistic humans. Doesn't stop them from being feared or hated by Fantastic Racism from actual humans.
  • Kakuriyo: Bed and Breakfast for Spirits has several characters that fall into this trope. Examples include Ginji (Kitsune), Ranmaru (wolf), Akatsuki (spider), Kasuga (Tanuki), Hideyoshi (monkey), Sasuke (Kamaitachi) and many more background characters.
  • Kemono Friends is set in a wildlife reserve-slash-amusement park where a substance called "Sandstar" has turned the animals into humanoids who are known as Friends. They have a few standard kemonomimi traits from their original forms but are otherwise humans, including wearing clothing that they didn't know was removable until the Token Human told them so during the Hot Springs Episode. Additionally, the show only depicts land animals and birds though the Last Episode, New Characterheard but not seen — is apparently a dolphin according to the credits. The old Nexon mobage and manga featured a few more marine mammals (dolphins, whales, seals, and a narwhal.)
  • In Last Period, the Animal Realm, one of the setting's six realms, is inhabited by humanoids with minor animal traits.
  • Log Horizon: There are three "beast races" in the game Elder Tale, corresponding to the Fighter, Mage, Thief trio. Members of the Wolf Fang race are usually identical to humans, but manifest wolf ears and tails when they get worked up in battle (or at all times, if they so choose). Fox Tail characters naturally have fox ears and one or more tails, but can hide them magically. The Werecats/Felinoids are instead full-blown Beast Men, but ironically lack tails. All three races have a shared backstory as soldiers created in ancient times to fight monsters.
  • Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch:
    • Lady Bat, the Villainous Crossdresser. Guess what he is.
    • The Black Beauty Sisters are anglerfish girls. In fact, they actually are anglerfish, transformed into kemonomimi.
    • Lanhua/Ranfa is a butterfly woman. Alala may be a dragonfly, but it's more likely that she's a fairy.
  • Tsuyu Asui from My Hero Academia can basically do whatever a frog can, and her friend Habuko Mongoose has a snake head. Keigo "Hawks" Takami has wings that grant him flight abilities, and Rumi Usagiyama has the limb strength and ears (and possibly tail) of a rabbit.
  • The titular Nukos in Nuko Duke are described as "cat-like hominidae that has evolved to be closer to humans than cats". They're basically tiny people (about the size of a fist) with cat ears and tails and has some feline characteristics.
  • In One Piece, female Minks in general tend to look more like humans with animal features than their male brethren, who are downright talking animals.
  • Petshop Of Horrors is full of these. Count D runs a shady pet shop in LA's Chinatown and with the help of a little incense, his customers can see the pets they receive from him as animal people. In their human forms, the animals sometimes retain basic traits from their animal selves - a pair of horns or some ears, a scaly lizard tail, fangs, fish appear as merpeople, etc. Others appear totally human, but still have animal-like personalities.
  • One of the basic concepts behind +Anima; the term "+Anima" applies to humans who can turn into this at will, almost always after witnessing the animal they're based on during a moment of life-threatening trauma (for example, a character became a fish +Anima after nearly drowning). Interestingly, this trope is also deconstructed. +Anima are not easily accepted by normal folks, oftentimes being victims of severe and disturbingly realistic prejudice. The main characters include, in order of appearance:
    • Cooro, a crow +Anima.
    • Husky, the aforementioned fish +Anima.
    • Senri, a bear +Anima.
    • Nana, a bat +Anima.
  • Problem Children are Coming from Another World, aren't they? has a number of different types, including the rabbit main character Kurousagi.
  • Rain's Head has the titular head having cat ears and tail, but she's still human.
  • The Rising of the Shield Hero: Demi-humans are quite common in this world, to the point that several countries are majority or even only populated by them. Main character Raphtalia is a Tanuki-demi-human, while Atla and Fohl Fayon are Hakuko (white tigers), Kiel and Wyndia are dog-demi-humans and Sadina is an orca-demi-human. It's revealed in the story that all Demi-humans worship The Shield Hero in some form or another; which would easily make main character Naofumi Iwatani who started off his adventure with a bad reputation in the kingdom of Melromarc the Demi-humans' David Hasselhoff.
  • Seton Academy: Join the Pack! is all about this trope, featuring only female characters that are mixtures of all kinds of animals, many of which are quite exotic (like Bonobos!).
  • In one chapter of Sgt. Frog, Keroro turns the animals in a zoo into animal-like humans with one of Kululu's crazy transformation guns, the platoon hoping that they can then convince one of them to join forces with them.
  • Show by Rock!! features a world of animal people called Myumons, who can switch between this and a less human Funny Animal form.
  • The characters of Strike Witches take on the ears and tails of various animals when they use their magic. Most of them are various cats or dogs.
  • Tenchi Muyo!: Ryo-okhi has three forms, ones as cat-rabbit, one as humanoid with cabbit-like feature, and the third is a starship
  • According to Studio Gainax, Viral from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is "a shark with feline genetics. If you pull out his teeth they grow back." He looks mostly human, except for catlike eyes and paws and shark's teeth.
    • Boota in his human form in the Multi-Dimensional Labryinth is a Bishōnen with whiskers. His Evil Counterpart, Guame, however, has the humanoid form of a Lizard Man.
    • Cytomander is a peacock.
    • Adiane has a scorpion tail.
  • Tokyo Mew Mew:
    • Aizawa Minto/Mew Mint, who is part Lorikeet.
    • Fujiwara Zakuro/Mew Zakuro, who is part wolf.
    • Hwang Bu-ling/Mew Pudding, a golden lion tamarin.
    • Midorikawa Retasu/Mew Lettuce is a rare example of a porpoise-girl. Her cetecean features are limited to ribbonlike antennae coming out of her head, although she later turns into a mermaid. Like Ichigo (wildcat likened to domestic cats) and Zakuro (wolf given a few dog qualities), Retasu and her powers are mostly porpoise-related but sometimes reflect just plain fish, like how she can breathe underwater.
    • Shirayuki Berii/Mew Berry of Tokyo Mew Mew a la Mode is part cat girl, part bunny girl, and all Canon Sue.
  • Cerberus of Today's Cerberus has a tail that behaves just like a dog's. Pulling on her tail can also be used to change which personality/head is the one in control of her body.
  • Tsukipro The Animation 2 features the Tsukino Hyakki Yakou Yōkai AU versions of the idol characters. Shown in the anime are four foxes (nine-tailed, four-tailed, and one-tailed), a Nekomata, three Kamaitachi, a karasu-tengu with black wings, several dragons, and a dog boy.
  • Many of the people in Twin Princess of Wonder Planet are either this or Beast Men.
    • Princess Sophie, Prince Auler, and Queen Elana of the Windmill Kingdom have floppy, dog-like Unusual Ears. The king, meanwhile, is a Wolf Man.
    • Princess Lione, Prince Tio, and King Wohl from the Flame Kingdom are Lion-based cat folk.
    • Princess Mirlo from the Waterdrop Kingdom has bear ears whereas her mother is very much a bear.
  • Usagi-chan de Cue!!: Kemonomimi are created by a UFO that merges common small fauna with lonely, asocial humans. One of these is Mimika, created when shinigami Inaba Mikami is fused with Haru's pet rabbit. Mimika is a blonde bunny-girl who lives to snuggle Haru. Another kemonomimi is Nekoi Koshka, created by fusing a stray black kitten with the orphan daughter of a criminal father and a suicidal mother. Koshka is a raven Cat Girl employed by the Public Welfare Board to hunt down other merged beings. A few other kemonomimi are shown in a dungeon run by the PWB, where they're stripped and tortured as "experiments."
  • Utawarerumono has almost the entire cast of them. Almost all characters have fluffy animal ears and tails, with the exception of the Onkamiyamukai, who are Winged Humanoids. The types of ears and tails vary depending on race: most characters are shown with dog ears and tails, but there are others who take after cats or rabbits as well. The main character, Hakuoro, is viewed as the weirdo because he's an ordinary, tail-less human. Well, that and the mask permanently stuck to his face...
  • The Vision of Escaflowne includes the requisite Cat Girls, wolf-men, a dog-man, and a race of Winged Humanoids. More exotic variants, such as a walrus-man, are sometimes seen in crowd shots.
  • Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL - Cathy a.k.a. Cat-chan shows kemonomimi traits with cat ears, tail, and apparently can talk to cats and Dog-chan is able to talk to dogs and has cute floppy ear-like hair.

Cats:

  • Leone from Akame ga Kill! turns into a lion-girl with her Imperial Arms' transformation, with the cat features becoming more distinguished the more power she uses.
  • In Delicious in Dungeon, Izutsumi is a beastkin, essentially an artificial chimera that includes a human component, and more specifically is a combination of some form of cat and human. She's traveling with the Thorden party now to find a way to break the curse that is keeping her beastly.
  • Two of the three members of the Genoaise team in Dog Days, pictured above, are from Galette, a nation of Cat-people.
  • Anna and Uni Puma from Dominion Tank Police are gynoids designed as cat girls sans tails.
  • Archer of Red, a.k.a. Atalanta, from Fate/Apocrypha has the ears and tail of a lion, as well cat-like paws on her hands. They're apparently the after-effects of a curse that was put on her when she was alive.

Birds:

  • The Negima! Magister Negi Magi manga reveals that Setsuna is half-Bird Clan, a variety of humanoid bird demon. This is implied in the last episode of the first anime (and downgraded to mere pactio transformation in the second), but never said outright in either anime. She sports an impressive set of white wings, which she can hide or shrink when not in use. Unfortunately, the Bird Clan considers white wings to be bad luck, and her half human lineage resulted in some self-depreciation. It's further revealed in the manga that she's an albino who dyes her hair and wears colored contacts to hide the fact, explaining the issues with her family. (Happens in real-world cultures.)
  • The residents of Mt. Phoenix in Ranma ½ who, along with the requisite wings, also have talon-like hands and feet.
  • A minor character from the Urusei Yatsura anime and manga series is Kurama, an Ancient Astronauts version of a Tengu (bird-goblin). Apparently, her species is divided into two 'halves'; one of them are humanoid crows the size of goblins, the other are, well, see the trope name. Also, she's the last one of the second type, and her duty (as she sees it) is to find a worthy guy to help her rebuild the population. Unfortunately for her, the only options in the series are Ataru Moroboshi, Shuutaro Mendo, and Ryuunosuke. She's also technically a Half-Human Hybrid; one of her female ancestors (who was, herself, an example of this trope) married a famous samurai from Japan.

Foxes:

  • The title character of Hana the Fox Girl is a white inari fox who can take on human form. When she does so, she has fox ears, a tail, and Cute Little Fangs.
  • Makoto in Kanon is a magically shapeshifted fox who doesn't have the appearance of one so much as the behavior. Unfortunately, she doesn't get as good a deal as kitsunes normally seem to and after spending a few weeks with Yuuichi her intelligence plummets back into that of a fox's and her motor control deteriorates rapidly and then she dies without realizing she just got 'married.'note  In the anime it's not as bad, though.
  • The titular character of Naruto contains the Nine-Tailed Fox; presumably as a result of this, he has three fox-like whisker-marks on his cheeks. Since his mother was a previous host of the Nine-Tailed Fox and lacked this trait, but the epilogue shows that both of Naruto's children inherit two whiskers despite neither being a host, it's likely the markings are genetic mutation caused by the Fox's powerful chakra. Possibly the result of Naruto's mother still being its host while she was pregnant.
  • Kuon from Triangle Heart 3: Sweet Songs Forever is a fox demon.
  • Meirin and Tamamonomae in Yami to Boushi to Hon no Tabibito. Some argue that these two are the same person, just placed in different worlds and times.

Wolves and Dogs:

  • Michiru in BNA: Brand New Animal looks mostly human with a raccoon dog's ears, tail, and mask in her Shapeshifter Default Form, unlike the majority of beastmen which have only a human and, well, Beast Man form.
  • In Dog Days, with the exception of Shinku (a regular human), Yuki (a fox), and Brioche (a wolf), everyone on the Biscotti side has dog features.
  • Dog hybrid chimera Dorochet from Fullmetal Alchemist. Although the only canine trait we really get to see from him is an extreme sense of loyalty. That, and a fellow chimera jokes he lifts his leg to pee.
  • Ouka in .hack//Legend of the Twilight; her character class is "Werewolf".
  • Half-werewolf Token Mini-Moe Susuki in Heterogenia Linguistico. Compared to the rest of her people, Susuki looks mostly human aside from her ears and tail. When she takes off her outer clothing we see that she's also covered in fur on her arms and legs (though she may have started growing it as part of her winter coat).
  • The Inukami in, well, Inukami!. Most of them hide their dog-like traits pretty well, though Tomohane's tail is quite clearly visible in human form.
  • Elga, Luna and Rino, the dog-girls from Inumimi.
  • The titular half dog-demon of Inuyasha looks like a human with dog's ears and fangs. His brother Sesshomaru (dog-demon) and The Rival Koga and his clan (wolf-demons) are full demons, but they look pretty human except for the tail and pointy ears. It is implied that this is only their disguise form; at least Sesshomaru is able to convert into his true form, a giant demon dog. Several other examples appear throughout the series, like Shippo (a kitsune who has a fox's tail and feet), Myoga (flea-demon), the bat-demon clan and Jinenji (half ginormous bug-eyed horse thing-demon).
  • Certain Familiars and Guardian Beasts from Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, such as Arf and Zafira.
  • Liru, a werewolf in Magical Pokaan.
  • Kiba Inuzuka of Naruto belongs to a ninja clan with dog-themed powers. As a result, his eyes have thin, animalistic pupils and he has fang-like incisors.
  • Kotaro Inugami in Negima! Magister Negi Magi, same as Inuyasha, and he likes to call himself a wolf.
  • Inugami from Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan is a Dog Boy and is naturally loyal to the death. While he constantly has his tongue out, he doesn't have dog ears, although his hair is spiky enough.

Primates:

  • Son Goku in Dragon Ball doesn't have ears, but he has a monkey tail. This is a reference to Sun Wukong the Monkey King. This later gets expanded to all Saiyans.
  • Darius, a human-gorilla chimera from Fullmetal Alchemist (nicknamed Donkey Kong by Ed, so go figure), has a less animalistic-appearance than the other chimera that Ed and the gang eventually travel with, as he barely gains any fur and he still keeps his face-shape (Though somewhat justified as humans and gorillas are in the same biological family).
  • Nano-Nano Pudding from Galaxy Angel Rune and the video game it's based on, Galaxy Angel II, though an Artificial Human made of Nanomachines, has what is clearly a monkey tail. She seems to be an Expy of Bu-ling from Tokyo Mew Mew.
  • In YuYu Hakusho, Rinku (that kid with the yo-yos) meets a half-monkey girl during the makai tournament.

Rabbits, Rodents, and other small mammals:

Bovines, Horses, and other ungulates:

  • Milk Party — A most disturbing h-manga oneshot. In this setting cows are Beast Men with cow ears and tails. They are still treated like Real Life cows and are used to produce milk. When the main character inevitably does the deed with the new cow his mother bought he considers it bestiality but cannot bring himself to stop. The cow ends up giving birth to the main character's child, an adorable baby boy who greatly resembles him and has bull ears and a tail. The main character has to talk his mother out of taking the calf to a butcher shop! Fridge Horror sets in when you realize that people get beef in this setting by butchering "cows" that are visually indistinguishable from humans with added ears and tails.
  • Moo Moo Farm takes place in a world where cattle resemble human girls. The ending follows this line of thought to its logical conclusion- the protagonist's mother, as well as every other human girl in that universe, resemble actual cows.
  • My Deer Friend Nokotan: The titular Nokotan looks like a normal human girl, except she has antlers sticking out of her head. However, the antlers turn out to be one of the least strangest things about her.
  • In 12 Beast, Female Minotaurs tend to look like human women with horns and cow feet unlike their male counterparts, who tend to look like the standard version of a minotaur.
  • Uma Musume has the titular One-Gender Race, who are distinguished from humans by their horse-like ears and tails. Word of God describes them as an "elf-like race", notable for their ability to run roughly twice the speed of a human.

Reptiles & Dragons:

  • Mink from Dragon Half has horns, a tail, and breaths fire.
  • Bido and Martel from Fullmetal Alchemist. The first is a human and lizard hybrid chimera that looks like an ugly, weird little guy with a tail that can climb up walls. The second is a human and snake chimera, and that mostly translates as an extremely flexible hot girl.
  • The dragons in Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid play with this trope. Similarly to the Negima! example, they're actual dragons capable of taking on human forms, but still show their horns and (in some cases) tails. However, these traits can also be suppressed, and the dragons frequently do so when among humans in public. They're also capable of turning certain parts of their body back into their dragon equivalents when necessary, such as when Tohru briefly bares her draconian arms when contemplating murdering her noisy neighbors. At another point, she indirectly reveals that she also normally has her wings out too in human form, but keeps them hidden even around Kobayashi. Only on one occasion does Tohru allow her wings out alongside her horns and tail, that being at Comiket, where cosplaying as fantasy creatures is so common that even the genuine articles can roam around without disguises.
  • "Tamaki" from Negima! Magister Negi Magi is a dragonfolk who is capable of transforming into an actual dragon. In humanoid form, she has thick horns and a thick tail, which according to Word of God means she can't wear panties.

Sea Creatures:

  • Hoshigaki Kisame from Naruto is a Shark Man. Suigetsu and Chojuro have elements of sharks as well. Fuguki, Samehada's owner before Kisame, is a puffer fish man. Though they and the other members (or aspiring members) of the 7 Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist might file their teeth intentionally, it seems they're not monsters but just weird looking people.
  • Ika Musume from Squid Girl has many characteristics of a squid such as tentacles, spitting ink and fins but still looks largely human.

Insects & Arachnids:
