The 2001 science fiction story "When This World Is All On Fire" by William Sanders depicts a near-future in which fuel and land are both in short supply due to global warming. White refugees from the disaster attempt to settle on Native American reservations.

Tropes in this work include:

  • The Captivity Narrative: Subverted; the main character, an Indian, takes the white girl home to her family when he catches her trying to rob a store.
  • Gaia's Lament: Global warming leads to mass flooding and crop failures.
  • Persecution Flip: White people have nowhere to go, except the reservations that they once restricted Native Americans to.
