Vagabond is a 2002 novel by Bernard Cornwell and the second novel in the The Grail Quest series. Following the Battle of Crécy, Thomas of Hookton returns to the North of England during a Scottish invasion to search for the Holy Grail.

This novel provides examples of:

  • Been There, Shaped History: Thomas gets to fire the arrow that wounds King David II of Scotland early in the Battle of Neville's Cross.
  • Broken Ace: Will Skeat has become this due to the brain injury he sustained in Harlequin, having lost the ability to recognize people until they speak to him, amongst an assortment of other cognitive disabilites. To top it off, he no longer has the physical strength to draw a longbow, though this seems to be the result of being out of practice during his recuperation, rather than a direct result of his injury.
  • Friendly Enemy: Lord Outhwaite, an Englishman, was once a prisoner of the Scottish Lord Douglas, during which time they grew to respect and even like one another. They even have a brief, but cordial conversation...in the middle of a major battle.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: Pierre and Yvette.
  • MacGuffin: The Holy Grail.
  • Too Cool to Live: One Scottish pikeman kills at least three Englishmen at Neville's Cross and is described as "carving a bloody path south all by himself" before falling to an English arrow.
