Literature / Thorns of Glory: Part One

Go To

Tropes:

  • Big Badass Battle Sequence: Every scene at Cumorah is this, with equal parts spectacle and terror.
  • Cool Sword: Apollus still wields his Roman sword which he notes gives him a good advantage.
    • On the negative side, a Lamanite's over-decorated officer sword ends up hindering him at a key moment.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • Apollus beats First Deer in a hilariously short amount of time, complete with Bond One-Liner
    • Harry inexplicably manages to beat six soldiers in an ambush (with an assist from Jacobah)
    • On a larger scale, the Lamanites and Teutihuacanos want to end the battle as quick as possible so they can have a claim to this.
  • Dual Wielding: Gidgiddonihah wields a hatchet and a sword.
  • Duel to the Death: Apollus is pushed to be in one by Eagle-Sky-Jaguar.
  • Expecting Someone Taller: Jesus Christ is described as looking very much like a normal Jewish man, with shaggy brown hair, sun-darkened skin, and even a bit of sunburn on the end of his nose. He doesn't even seem to have the blue eyes he had in Book 4.
  • Gorn: The battle at Cumorah is expectedly gruesome. Amongst other things, Brock sees an arrow enter a soldier's mouth and pierce the bottom of his jaw.
  • Killed Mid-Sentence: Apollus kills Lamanai this way.
  • Plot Armor:
    • Harry invokes this in-universe trying to reassure himself about their survival. No one, he reasons, has ever died. Then he remembers that some have died and has to clarify that no one from the modern day has died.
  • Zerg Rush: The Lamanite and Teutihuacano forces are throwing their men at the Nephite defenses with abandon, letting thousands die in the rush.
