Go To

The Wolves of Elementa is a series of children's fantasy novels by Sophie Torro. The first book, Frozen Secrets, was released in April 2021.

Elementa is a divided world ruled by wolves- wolves of Sky, Water, Earth, and Fire. Every wolf has an element they're born with, and every element has a pack upholding its supremacy. The packs have fought since time immemorial, driven by bigotry- and greed for Elemental Hearts, the rare crystals that amplify wolf magic. To befriend someone of a different pack is unthinkable.

But Aurora, a young Sky Wolf, has done just that. And she's discovered something terrible; the other wolves are far from the jealous savages described in propaganda. They're people just like her. And unless someone stops it, the elemental war killing them all will never end.

Together, Aurora and her friends- fierce Ember, observant Nautilus, and brash Sandstorm- set out to unite the packs.

Books

  • Frozen Secrets (April 2021)
  • Royal Rivalry
  • Shifting Sands
  • Flaming Fate (October 2022)

This series contains the following tropes:

  • Abusive Parents: King Inferno is cruel to all his children. Ember got the worst of it because he lacked an element. In Flaming Fate it's revealed that Inferno was more compassionate then he let on. In a letter he wrote to Ember, Inferno explained that despite being vile and nasty towards the former he actually cared about Ember and regretted not being a better father to him before he died.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Benthos claims he turned evil (again; it's complicated) because he overheard his adoptive father describe him as a "replacement". Even if his word can be trusted, it's not stated whether Delta meant he was an emotional replacement for Nautilus or a political one. Events imply the latter, because Benthos was set to inherit the throne and Delta does not neglect him after Nautilus shows up...which would mean Benthos' entire Faceā€“Heel Turn was based on a misunderstanding. But, like always, he's not in the mood to listen to explanations.
  • Elemental Motifs: All over the place.
    • Air is represented by the Sky Pack, winged mountain-dwellers with storm magic.
    • Water is represented by the Water Pack, finned hydrokinetics who live underwater.
    • Earth is represented by the Earth Pack, geokinetics who live in a desert.
    • Fire is represented by the Fire Pack, pyrokinetics who live on a volcanic island.
  • Mix-and-Match Critters: Water Wolves are basically lupine mermaids, complete with large tails, gills, and fins all over their bodies.
  • Noble Wolf: The heroes, of course, who bring peace to Elementa one deceitful tyrant at a time.
  • Royal Brat: Prince Benthos is a self-serving prince who only cares about himself.
  • Cain and Abel:
    • Benthos forms a lethal rivalry with Nautilus after learning that he's Nautilus' adopted brother. .
    • Ember has a poor relationship with his more-villainous littermates (Flare, Spark, Scorch and Blaze). When he learns that Nautilus is his maternal half-brother, he almost becomes a Cain to him but manages to turn back and apologize.
  • Fantastic Racism:
    • Queen Tempest hates the other three packs because King Inferno killed her daughter.
    • In the epilogue of Frozen Secrets, King Inferno actively tries to thwart the heroes' plan to unite the packs. In Flaming Fate it's revealed that Inferno was never against the idea of the four-packs uniting with each other. Inferno was actually afraid that Fire-Pack would continue to be mistreated by the other three packs even after they've united each other hence his reason for attempting to sabotage Ember and co's plans
    • The Water Wolf monarchs Ripple and Fin considered their hybrid grandson an abomination and forcibly separated him and his parents from one another.
  • The Reveal: The series has several important twists.
    • The end of Frozen Secrets reveals Ember to be a Fire Wolf prince and the estranged son of King Inferno.
    • Flaming Fate reveals that Inferno wasn't as tyrannical as he made himself out to be. He also wished he been a better father to all of his children (Including Ember)
    • In Royal Rivalry, Nautilus is revealed to be the Water Wolf crown prince and a maternal half-brother of Ember.
  • What Have I Done: After Ember steals his friends elemental powers, he is shocked and horrified when he discovers that he had killed them in the process.
    • Disney Death: With help from Ash, Ember is able to resurrect Aurora, Nautilus and Sandstorm by giving back their powers.
