The Wild Robot is a book written by Peter Brown. It was originally published April 5th, 2016.

One day, some hundred or so years into the future, a robot named Roz wakes up one day on an island with no memory of any prior events. Unbeknownst to her, she is the last surviving robot from a cargo ship that sank in a storm. Due to her programming telling her to keep herself in good working order, she now must learn to survive in the island's wilderness. Two sequels, The Wild Robot Escapes and The Wild Robot Protects, were published in 2017 and 2023 respectively.

Now has a Character Page that most definitely needs contributions.

A film adaptation is in development at DreamWorks Animation with Chris Sanders set to write and direct. The film is set to release September 20, 2024.

The Wild Robot features examples of:

  • Artificial Intelligence: Roz is a sentient machine.
  • Benevolent A.I.: Roz means no harm, and at one point speculates she was built to help people.
  • Grew Beyond Their Programming: Roz starts out with her only objective being to keep herself in good working order, but she eventually grows to be more than just a mindless machine.
  • Lemony Narrator: A Downplayed example. The narrator narrates somewhat unconventionally.
  • Nature Is Not Nice: Despite its premise of a robot befriending animals, the book does not give you the typical Disney-esque depiction of nature. One prime example of this is when winter comes, the cold ends many animal's lives, with their dead, frozen bodies being buried in the snow.
