  • Black-and-White Morality: A literal example. The Big Bad Stygians have dark-themed names, while the spectrum that combines to defeat them use white magic.
  • Blow You Away: Wind shaping is a subset of the Coles' heat abilities, which only a few characters can do.
  • Color-Coded Elements: Each of the six types of magic have an associated color:
  • Coming of Age Story: Most books are Young Adult and feature a young person discovering their place in the world.
  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character:
    • The villain of the Dream Rovers trilogy is the ancestor of the Keita's Wings Love Interest.
    • The characters of Keita's Wings are all Spectra who must hide their abilities from humans. The Spectra Crown Tales open from the point of view of a human.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: The Nomes use earth shaping abilities.
  • Elemental Powers: The six Spectra kingdoms each have an elemental ability: heat (including wind), earth, lightning/innovation, life, water, and communication.
  • Elemental Rock-Paper-Scissors: the six clans represent the six colors. The three "secondary" clans: Nome (orange), Sprite (green), and Muse (purple) have a natural disadvantage against their complimentary primary color: Mer (blue), Cole (red), and Lectran (yellow), respectively.
  • Functional Magic: Each clan can manipulate a different element, based on the six rainbow colors.
  • Green Thumb: Sprites have nature abilities, which can include manipulating plants.
  • Hero of Another Story: Sienna in The Keita's Wings series often has adventures off screen.
  • Hit So Hard, the Calendar Felt It: The coming of humans to the Spectra world. Previously, the freedom of humans from griffins.
  • Legendary in the Sequel: The characters of Keita's Wings and Dream Rovers both see a relief carving of Mira from Mira's Griffin.
  • Making a Splash: The Mers use water abilities.
  • Our Griffins Are Different: Griffins are large animals with limited magic in all six types. They are four-limbed, and have a changing relationship with humans throughout different series.
  • Psychic Link: All Spectra characters have a psychic link with their siblings, but it's limited by distance of about a mile. In addition, the Muse clan can create one with anyone they are emotionally close to, regardless of distance.
  • Playing with Fire: Coles can control heat, which often results in fire.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: The exiled royals in Keita's Wings must fight to regain their kingdoms, and references are made to their parents ruling. The duties of royalty are discussed in The Spectra Undaunted.
  • Shock and Awe: Lectrans use electrical abilities.
  • Speaks Fluent Animal: Some Sprites (nature magic) and Muses (communication magic) can communicate with animals, though not in word-for-word human speak.
  • The Empath: Muses, the communicator clan, have heart-like abilities that can include emotion reading and manipulation.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: Sprites know at least one animal form.
  • War Is Hell: Battles are always chaotic and frightening, even for powerful people.
