Escape is impossible.

An old oil platform that had been converted into the world's first floating rehabilitation center. The Rig was actually five platforms, one at each point of the compass, connected by networks of metal walkways and orange pipes, and a final platform in the middle of the structure. From the air, the Rig was shaped almost like a diamond.

The Rig is a Young Adult novel by Joe Ducie with clear science fiction elements about a teenage convict sent to the most secure location on Earth... because he's escaped from everywhere else.

There are currently 2 novels in the series:

  1. The Rig
  2. Crystal Force

The Book Provides Examples Of:

  • Fictional Sport - Rigball. It's basically an excuse for the YA inmates to beat each other with highly magnetised lacrosse sticks. The twist is that the MC doesn't know the team he's playing against are enhanced super soldiers with powers that are slowly driving them mad.
  • Great Escape - Drake's goal is to escape from The Rig. He does. It's mentioned that he has had other great escapes in the past from all the other prisons they tried to put him in.
  • Prison - Almost the entire book is set on the Rig, a specialized juvenile detention center AKA prison.
  • Psycho Serum - Crystal-X
  • Wardens Are Evil - The Warden is using The Rig for his own purposes. He's obsessed with Crystal-X, a blue drug-like substance that gives superpowers to those exposed to it... generally with a price attached.
  • Working on the Chain Gang - All the inmates on the Rig are required to work in some capacity, and some jobs are dirtier than others.
