The Loneliest Girl in the Universe is a book by Lauren James about a girl who is completely alone in space with only her therapist from Earth's daily voice messages for comfort. Over the course of the book, a war breaks out on Earth and her therapists voice messages stop. Luckily, her ship, The Eternity, will connect with The Infinity, and now she has someone else to talk to.
The Loneliest Girl in the Universe contains examples of:
- Bittersweet Ending: Romy's mom manages to stop J from killing her daughter but she has to sacrifice herself to do it. Romy comforts her mom as she dies telling her she forgives her. Romy discovers other people in stasis on board The Infinity meaning she'll never be alone again.
- Centrifugal Gravity: In both The Infinity and The Eternity, this is used.
- Faster-Than-Light Travel: Averted. The Infinity has a maximum speed of 0.09c, and the much faster The Eternity has a maximum speed of 0.75c.
- Properly Paranoid: Romy is scared that the astronauts are out for revenge that she lived and they died. although it isn't the astronauts who are out for revenge, J wants to kill Romy because of that reason.
- Show Within a Show: Exploited; Romy watches Loch and Ness, as well as reading and writing fanfiction of it. J takes advantage of this by using lines from her fanfiction and purposefully acting like Jayden Ness-Romy's favorite character-so he can make her like him.
- Sleeper Starship: The Infinity and The Eternity are both this. However, due to a failure in the stasis pods on The Infinity, all the astronauts save Romy's parents die.
- Space People: The astronauts on The Infinity and The Eternity expected to spend most of their life in space. Romy is, however, the only person born in space.
- Survivor's Guilt: What ultimately causes Romy's mother to crack, leading to her husband's death.
- The Shrink: Romy's therapist Molly is an awesome shrink. J cuts off all and any contact with the Infinity to weaken Romy's resolve.
