The Fallen Arises is the first volume in the fantasy saga A Dance In Fire. It is the story of a young witch finding her place amid magical clashes and murder. An age-old prophecy stands poised to come true, unleashing the greatest dark witch of all time, while Pandora’s Gate - a magical prison - grows weaker by the day. One thing is clear - the world is changing.
The Fallen Arises contains examples of:
- A God Am I: Echoed by Mortira Greystoke after her butchering of the mages in the Nightshade Halls.
- Berserk Button: Several of the characters have these. Vermillia, cannot stand Karliah being hurt, Valletta despises being called childish, and Nero is willing to murder disrespectful rookies. Even the mild mannered Maeral has one, utterly trouncing Silver Moon mages that are sexist to Artemisia, Imane and Shyra.
- Black Magic: A form of magic that works akin to an infection, physically changing the user while granting them use of non wand magic and more destructive abilities.
- Blood Magic: A corrosive and toxic form of magic outlawed by the White Order due to its potential to kill the user.
- Combat Pragmatist: Nero Copperspire uses anything at his disposal to kill mages, including guns, a grandfather clock and even throwing several off of balconies.
- Downer Ending: Syrenna has returned, her followers alongside her with Dorothy hostage. Pandora’s Gate is decaying. Artemisia Torrance is dead and Mortira Greystoke is once again in the world.
- Mama Bear: Shyra has hints of this towards Dorothy when Karliah Hemlock threatens to torture then murder the young and defenseless girl.
- Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: During her grieving process, Dorothy accidentally opens Syrenna’s tomb, fulfilling the prophecy in the process.
- One-Man Army: Nero Copperspire during his assault on Ravenstone. Jarrin also qualifies during his revenge on the Silver Moon.
- Roaring Rampage of Revenge: The vampire Jarrin Silverstone unleashes a glorious one upon the Silver Moon following their assault and murder of his wife.
- Sealed Evil in a Can: Syrenna Blackthorn is this, locked away in a tomb only unlocked by her blood descendent.
- The Dreaded: Syrenna Blackthorn. Also whatever is locked away in Pandora’s Gate.
- Unholy Nuke: Vermillia La Chance detonates one over the estate of Ravenstone in storm form.
