The Doorway and the Deep is a Children's Fantasy Novel by Katherine E. Ormsbee, and the sequel to The Water and the Wild.

Some time has passed since Lottie and her new friends, Oliver and Adalaide Wilfer, and Fife, travelled across the Faerie world of Limn to the Southerly Kingdom. Their actions have made them fugitives in their homeland, and now they're all living in Wisp Territory with Fife's mother, The Seamstress. Oliver and Adelaide's father, Moritasgus Wilfer, is also living there, trying to find a new cure for The Plague that's devastated the Wisp population. What's more, Eliot, Lottie's human friend, has been making regular visits there, to the point he might as well have moved in.

While living there, they learn that there's a conspiracy to kill the Southerly King, who wants Lottie dead because, being the last of the Fiske's, she's a potential threat to his position as king. What's more, a wounded Wisp guard tells them that the Southerly King's new right-hand sprite, Iolanthe, is planning to build an illegal gorge in Wisp Territory (illegal because it involves cutting down silver-branch trees, which are endangered in Limn).

Since Iolanthe and her crew have destroyed the apple tree Lottie and Eliot regularly used to get back to the real world, their plans to have Thanksgiving dinner with Eliot's dad have been delayed, and what's more, Eliot is put in danger. The atmosphere of Limn is deadly to humans if they stay there too long, and the only other apple tree home is in Southerly Territory, which is a long way from Wisp Territory. So, with no other choice, the five begin their long trek across Limn to kill the Southerly King and get Eliot home.

The book was published on October 4th, 2016.

The Doorway And The Deep contains examples of:

  • Alien Blood: Wisp blood is white, and touching it can put you in a deep sleep.
  • Birds of a Feather: Oliver and Eliot bond over their shared love of the arts. Fife took a disliking to Eliot because of how close they've become.
  • Monochromatic Eyes: Nash's eyes go solid white when he uses his keen.
  • The Night Owl: Lottie, Adelaide, Oliver, Eliot, and Fife have taken to sleeping during the day while staying with Fife's mom.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: The ice crawler has red eyes, and was set to attack the boat with Lottie and co. on it.
