The Curious Sofa: A Pornographic Work by Ogdred Weary is a 1961 picture book which details the deflowerment of a 1920s woman who has a liking for grapes.

This work contains examples of:

  • Auto Erotica: As soon as Henry invites Alice to a taxi ride to his mansion, they seemingly proceed to have sex on the floor of the taxi.
  • Barbie Doll Anatomy: Despite being a "pornographic" novel, all of the characters apparently have no genitals.
  • Bestiality Is Depraved: Very thinly veiled:
They were soon joined by Donald, Herbert's' singularly well-favored sheepdog, and many were the giggles and barks that came from the shrubbery.
  • Bigger Is Better in Bed: Try and make it through the entire book without once cracking up at the repeated use of synonyms for "well-endowed" to describe the male characters. If this is any indication, it is that Alice absolutely adores the "well-endowed".
  • Comic Sutra: "That evening in the library Scylla, one of the guests who had certain anatomical peculiarities, demonstrated the Lithuanian Typewriter." If her anatomical peculiarities are anything like those of her mythological namesake, that would be quite a thing to see...or not. Don't try it at home, unless you have those peculiarities too.
  • Did They or Didn't They?: Likely the intended reaction towards this book, as the "sex" in the story is never actually shown, and the story is mostly made up of phrases that sound like sexual euphemisms.
  • Funny Background Event: In The Curious Sofa, it mentions "the party split into threes and twos before retiring", meaning the groups are about to have sex. Seen leaving with a couple is the main character's dog.
  • Grapes of Luxury: In almost every depiction of her, Alice is shown to be holding a bunch of grapes.
  • Look-Alike Lovers: Alice meets Colonel Gilbert and his wife, who both have wooden legs, wearing the exact same clothes, and even have the same body shapes. The only thing that differentiates them is that the colonel has a mustache.
  • Secondary Character Title: The book is named after a device that doesn't show up until three pages before the book ends.
  • Sex Starts, Story Stops: All of the "sex" scenes come completely out of nowhere, are only mentioned in one panel each, nothing is ever shown when they do happen, and they do not contribute to the story in any way.
  • Sexual Euphemism: Rather than actually showing the sex as it is implied to have happend, it is instead hinted at through euphemisms.
  • Uncertain Doom: It is never explained what happened to Alice when the titular sofa finally shows up at the end of the story.
"When Alice saw what was about to happen, she began to scream uncontrollably..."
