Queens of Geek is a 2017 young adult novel by Jen Wilde, originally published on Wattpad.

Three teenagers travel from Australia to America to attend the major convention SupaCon. Charlie is a popular vlogger and up-and-coming actress who's there to promote the movie she starred in. Taylor is Charlie's best friend, an autistic and anxious girl who hopes to meet her favorite author Skyler Atkins, the author of the Queen Firestone series. Jamie is their male friend who has a crush on Taylor. Things don't go as planned - Charlie's agent is unable to get VIP passes for Taylor and Jamie, meaning they must spend most of the con without Charlie. Meanwhile, Charlie's jerk costar and ex-boyfriend Reese will be at the con too, and she has to make nice with him for the sake of both their careers.

Queens of Geek contains the following tropes:

  • Badass Longcoat: Taylor's Queen Firestone cosplay includes a black trenchcoat with a crown sigil sewn on the back.
  • Broken Heel: In The Rising, Charlie's character Ava breaks her heel while fleeing zombies, and Reese's character Will helps her up.
  • Camp Straight: Taylor is a female version - she has an undercut, doesn't wear makeup, and shops at the men's section, but isn't attracted to women.
  • Celeb Crush: Charlie has a crush on Alyssa Huntington, the vlogger who inspired her to take up vlogging. She's thrilled to meet her at SupaCon.
  • Character Tics: Taylor has a habit of pushing up her glasses.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: Charlie gets killed while playing video games because Alyssa's presence is so distracting.
  • Elevator Failure: Taylor and Jamie are briefly trapped between floors, giving them time to talk about their insecurities and kiss.
  • Endearingly Dorky: Alyssa thinks Charlie's hyperactivity during her video game reviews is adorable.
  • Forgets to Eat: Taylor got so caught up making her costume that she kept forgetting to eat and would have starved if not for her mother and sister reminding her.
  • How Dad Met Mom: Charlie made a video for her parents' twentieth anniversary in which she talks about how they met at college in Beijing before moving to Australia.
  • Licensed Game: At the arcade, Taylor and Alyssa play a game based on The Rising.
  • "Meet the Celebrity" Contest: Taylor waits in line for hours to meet Skyler, only for Skyler to leave when she's almost reached the front of the line. Taylor enters the Queen Firestone SupaFan contest, which consists of a cosplay contest followed by a trivia quiz, because if she wins she'll get to have dinner with Skyler, be her date to the SupaCon After-Party, and go to the premiere of the next Queen Firestone movie. She almost wins the trivia contest, but chokes during the last question, and Brianna wins the contest instead. However, Brianna later introduces Taylor to Skyler to thank Taylor for helping her through a panic attack before the trivia contest.
  • The Merch: In-universe example. Taylor loads up on Queen Firestone merchandise.
  • Moment Killer: Taylor and Jamie are about to kiss when the room service guy knocks.
  • Not His Blood: A zombie drips fake blood on Taylor's forehead while she's running a zombie maze. Later, Jamie asks her, "Are you bleeding?" Taylor replies, "It's fake blood."
  • Older Than They Look: Taylor is eighteen, but with her short, round body and wide eyes, she looks a lot younger.
  • Portmanteau Couple Name: In-universe example. Shippers refer to Charlie and Reese as "Chase."
  • Retail Therapy: A rare male example. Jamie buys lots of Marvel comics to deal with the awkwardness after his and Taylor's first kiss. He even uses the phrase "retail therapy."
  • Romance on the Set: In-universe example. Charlie and Reese fell in love while filming The Rising.
  • Screams Like a Little Girl: Reese does this when he's startled by a zombie in the zombie maze.
  • Security Cling: Taylor and Jamie spend most of the zombie maze hanging onto each other.
  • Sensory Overload: When Taylor is already worried and stressed, a group of shouting, laughing teenage boys enter the diner and sit behind her. This is the last straw, and she runs back to the hotel room and has a meltdown.
  • Shirtless Scene: Invoked by Reese, who takes his shirt off to make the girls in the audience scream.
  • Shower of Angst: Taylor takes a hot shower to calm down after a meltdown.
  • Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon: Jamie mentions that Taylor kicks ass at this game.
  • Speech Impediment: Brianna, a girl Taylor befriends at SupaCon, had a small stutter as a child, which she was teased over.
  • Squee: Taylor shouts "Eeeee! We're getting closer!" as the line to meet Skyler Atkins moves forward.
  • Star-Making Role: In-universe example. The Rising is the movie that put Charlie's name on the map.
  • Switching P.O.V.: Taylor and Charlie take turns narrating.
  • Tears of Joy: One cosplayer cries with excitement when she meets Charlie.
  • Teeny Weenie: Charlie thinks of Reese as "a gigantic phony with narcissistic tendencies and a tiny penis."
  • Tsundere: Charlie used to think Reese was the "harsh" kind - he was a sensitive, vulnerable Nice Guy when alone with Charlie, but turned into a swaggering Jerk Jock when anyone else was around. Now she doesn't know which version was closer to the real Reese.
