A short story found within the Elder Scrolls universe. Written by Waughin Jarth. The book can be found in Oblivion and Skyrim. It's a story about a caper, so in both game, reading it gives you experience in a related skill (sneaking in Oblivion, pickpocketing in Skyrim).
A young female thief (of whom no name is given) has just been caught by The Master of Stealth, her next target (she steals for the challenge), inside his house. After an unsuccessful attempt to escape, he agrees to teach her, and gives her her final test.
This Book Within A Video Game contains examples of:
- Chekhov's Skill: The Master of Stealth]]'s proficiency at distracting people. Incidentally, both instances of the skill shown were used against the girl: First, an owl distracted the girl, allowing the Master of Stealth to pass by her; Second, the girl herself was the distraction, allowing the Master of Stealth to steal Nocturne's clothes.
- Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu??: Double subverted. The girl, with the help of the Master of Stealth, plans to steal Nocturne's clothes during the summoning ritual, but fails when the Master of Stealth doesn't show up before she's noticed by a follower. As she's about to be swallowed alive by Nocturne's shadows, she sees that Nocturne's clothes are missing, and immediately realizes what the Master of Stealth has just done.
- Unwitting Pawn: The girl was being played by the Master of Stealth all along. She realizes this only as she's been caught by Nocturne and her followers.
