Oona is a Children's Picture Book by Kelly DiPucchio, with illustrations by Raissa Figueroa.

Oona is a young mermaid who lives in the sea with her turtle and otter friends. Together, the three love nothing more than collecting mysterious treasures from the surface world, and boy do they have a lot of them. However, there is one treasure that's always been just out of their grasp: a crown sitting in a dark crevice. Thanks to the ocean rift down there, Oona has never been able to get close to it, no matter how many times she's tried. And frankly, it's begun to frustrate her. What's a little mermaid girl to do to get her hands on a tiara?

The book was released on January 12th, 2021, and has a sequel, Oona In The Arctic.

Oona contains example of:

  • Anti-Climax: At the end of the book, it builds up to Oona using the long pointy shell to get the crown dramatically. She holds her breath. Ready? Steady. AIM! Tiny Clunk!
  • Black Bead Eyes: Most of the characters in the book have little black dot eyes thanks to the simplistic art style.
  • Chain of People: One of Oona's failed attempts to get the crown involved a long chain of crabs reaching into the pit. It was foiled by a plank of wood hitting Oona on the head.
  • Free-Range Children: Oona has no parents present in the book. Still, she seems to get on just fine.
  • Funny Afro: Oona has a MASSIVE afro on her head that's half her size.
  • Heroic BSoD: After angrily giving up on getting the crown, Oona loses her spark. It isn't until she finds a pointy seashell and gets an idea that she bounces back.
  • Interspecies Friendship: One picture in the book shows that Oona, a mermaid, has some human friends.
  • One-Word Title: Oona, obviously.
  • Playful Otter: Otto the otter, who hangs out with Oona and goes treasure hunting with her.
  • Protagonist Title: The protagonist is a little mermaid girl who's named Oona.
  • Rage Quit: In the middle of the book, Oona gets frustrated at her inability to get the tiara that she shouts "You can keep your dumb crown. I quit!" down into the pit. She becomes quite depressed about it for a while afterwards.
