No Southern Strategy: The Ramifications of An Alternate 1964 Election is an ongoing Alternate History timeline written by Nofix and Gonzo, on the website AlternateHistory.com. Told primarily in the form of alternate Wikipedia infoboxes, the timeline focuses on the effects leading from an alternate 1964 election where the Dixiecrats split to form a separate ticket, depriving Barry Goldwater of any electoral votes and giving Lyndon Johnson an even larger landslide than in our timeline.

The timeline can be found here. As of early 2019, the timeline has been brought up to the early 1990s, and the authors are busy posting updates on how individual countries have fared in the quarter-century-plus of altered history (carefully writing their entries so as not to give spoilers).

Provides examples of:

  • A Nazi by Any Other Name: Functionally describes various groups and nations in the Timeline, specially those in southern Africa.
  • Argentina Is Nazi Land:
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: the timeline runs on this which results in it often being accused of being dystopia because of the non-comformist ideologies developing in this world.
  • Democracy Is Bad: Subverted by most part.
    • While the two major parties remain dominant in the US third parties manage to grow, and challenge to a certain extent the duopoly without the country degenerating into an inefficient, authoritarian hellhole.
    • In Canada, the system faces a shape-up as the Liberal Party note  suffers a series a scandals that weaken it and allow a right-wing coalition to dominate the nation.
    • In Germany the dominant five-party system faces a massive shake up when a split between the Christian Democratic Union note  the regional Christian Social Union over the power of the National Democratic Party note  which allows the Social Democrats and the Free Democrats to take power. While initially successful in passing a progressive agenda, a series of foreign policy blunders results in Social-Liberal Coalition losing enough seats in the parliament that they’re forced to make a coalition with the Christian Democrats creating a center-left government.
    • In South Africa, the death of a reformist leader allows the hardliners to seize the National Party and give the Premiership to Magnus Malan. Using the profits of illegal diamond and arms sale he props up neighboring friendly regimes, and targeting anti-Apartheid activists. However over time the rise of a far-right party called Herstigte Nasionale starts to slowly chip away the voter share of the National Party, undermining Malan’s power base.
  • Decided by One Vote: The 1990 United States House of Representatives election in Rhode Island, where David Carlin beats Buddy Cianci by one vote.
  • Dirty Communists: Subverted by the Italian Communist Party.
  • Dystopia: subverted, see Blue-and-Orange Morality above.
  • Fictional Political Party: The political changes after 1964 result in the formation of third parties across the US.
    • The National Conservative Party, a party of conservative and right-leaning voters which take up the old Dixiecrat seats in the South. It's recruits include Jesse Helms and George Lincoln Rockwell, who becomes the Governor of Virginia.
    • Freak Power becomes a powerful political movement in Colorado, especially once Hunter Thompson becomes Governor, governing under left-libertarian policies.
  • Growing the Beard: In-Universe. Charles Evers' Republican campaign for governor is a lackluster failure until he defends George Lincoln Rockwell of all people from impeachment.
  • Heel–Face Turn: George Lincoln Rockwell, the founder of the American Nazi Party, abandons Nazism, going so far as to endorse Charles Evers for governor of Mississippi.
  • Irony: Charles Evers, a liberal African American civil rights activist, becoming the governor of one of the most conservative and reactionary states in America.
  • Odd Friendship: The friendship between Evers and Rockwell.
  • Our Presidents Are Different:
    • Hubert Humphrey is President Personable
    • Henry Howell is President Focus Group,
    • Roger MacBride is President Iron because of his strong libertarian view points and and President Target after nearly being assassinated by the Manson family.
    • Roy Cohn is President Schemer and President Minority being America's first Jewish president.
  • Richard Nixon, the Used Car Salesman:
    • We have Presidents Lyndon Johnson in 1964 (D), Hubert Humphrey in 1968 (D), Henry Howell in 1973 (D), Roger MacBride in 1976 (R), Roy Cohn in 1981 (R), and Fox McKeithen in 1988 (D).
    • George H.W. Bush serves as President MacBride's Secretary of State.
    • James Buckley becomes Mayor of New York.
    • Pat Robertson becomes a Senator, and the National Conservative presidential nominee in 1988.
    • Mo Udall becomes a Senator.
    • Shirley Temple becomes a Congresswoman, and later becomes Roy Cohn's Vice President.
    • George Wallace loses the Alabama governorship in 1970 and never returns to prominence.
    • John McCain becomes Governor of Arizona.
    • Bill Clinton becomes Governor of Arkansas, as in real life, and later a Senator, but is elected as a Republican.
    • Sam Yorty becomes Governor of California after defeating Ronald Reagan.
    • Bob Dornan becomes Mayor of Los Angeles, and later a Senator for California.
    • Bobby Fischer becomes a Congressman.
    • Hunter S. Thompson becomes Governor of Colorado.
    • Joe Biden serves as President McKeithen's National Security Advisor.
    • Donald Rumsfeld becomes a Senator.
    • James Carville becomes Governor of Louisiana.
    • Eugene McCarthy is elected Governor of Minnesota as a Republican.
    • Civil rights activist Charles Evers becomes the Governor of Mississippi, and the first African-American state Governor.
    • Jay Rockefeller and David Rockefeller both serve as Senators for New York.
    • Bill Kristol becomes a Congressman.
    • Jerry Springer becomes Governor of Ohio, and later a Senator.
    • R. Budd Dwyer becomes Governor of Pennsylvania.
    • Ron Paul becomes Governor of Texas.
    • Charlie Wilson becomes a Senator.
    • George Lincoln Rockwell becomes Governor of Virginia
    • Dick Cheney becomes the Democratic Governor of Wyoming, but loses a recall election after being accused of corruption.
  • Stop Being Stereotypical: Why Trent Lott's campaign for Governor of Mississippi falls apart. Seeing Charles Evers surging in the polls, he launches ads so racist they offend Mississippians, especially when he claims the people of the state would riot if a black man is elected governor.
  • Shout-Out: There are a few to Fear, Loathing and Gumbo on the Campaign Trail '72 peppered throughout.
    • In 1988, W. Fox McKeithen is elected President of the United States. This has been confirmed as partly an homage to Gumbo, in which John J. McKeithen (W. Fox's father) plays a central role as a presidential candidate.
    • As in Gumbo, Howard Hughes founds a right-wing media network called the Hughes Network. And, as in Gumbo, one of the TV programs on this network is a talk show hosted by a hard-right figure (here it's Joseph Sobran; in Gumbo it's Spiro Agnew) of which the title is "[Presenter's name] On Point".
  • Sliding Scale of Alternate History Plausibility: Very much on the Type I side. Unlike some works of alternate history, which employ a narrative style, build toward an explicit historical objective, or are aggressively dystopian, NSS is written in an encyclopedic style whose purpose is simply to give a highly believable and realistic account of divergent trends and developments in world politics in the mid-to-late 20th century.
  • Young Future Famous People: Jeb Bush is briefly mentioned in 1988 as a Republican State Senator from Massachusetts.
    • A young Bernie Sanders also appears as the Liberal Party nominee for the New York City mayoralty in 1989.
