It is rough growing up in a Belfast neighborhood, especially when a high ranking IRA member stalks you.
A first-person novel written in 2018 by Anna Burns, the protagonist of the story recounts a part of her life that were filled with rumors against her, a struggling love life and fearing for the safety of everyone around her, as the titular Milkman pursues her with stalking and threatening her family.
A lot, lot of stalking.
The book provides examples of:
- Ambiguously Gay: Chef.
- Black Sheep: Individuals nicknamed by the community as "Beyond-the-pales", with acts ranging from spewing conspiracy theories to poisoning people. The protagonist became one of these for her "Reading while walking" habit.
- In-Series Nickname: Every character are referred to as a nickname, whether by the protagonist themselves ("Milkman", "Maybe-Boyfriend", etc.) or when others refer to them ("Middle Sister", "Milkman", etc).
- No Romantic Resolution: This was the backstory of real milkman.
- One-Steve Limit: Averted with two characters called milkman, only difference is the capitalization.
- Stalker with a Crush: The titular Milkman to our protagonist.
- Western Terrorists: "Renouncer of the State", the IRA.
