Kine, also known as Marshworld, is a fantasy novel by A.R. Lloyd about a weasel's battle against a horde of mink that have invaded his home. It was followed by two sequels, Witchwood, in which Kine battles rats, and Dragon Pond, in which he battles a polecat and his allies.
Kine contains examples of:
- Action Girl: Kia.
- Animal Talk: The animals all seem to speak the same language.
- Big Bad: Gru.
- Cool Old Guy: One-Eye.
- Death of a Child: Kine is motivated to unite the weasels in driving out the mink for good after they kill his mate and all but one of his offspring.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Kine is very arrogant and boastful, but he truly cares for Kia and their young.
- Meaningful Name: Kine is an old English word for weasel.
- Sole Survivor: Of Kine and Kia's litter, only Wonder survives the mink attack.
- Wicked Weasel: Averted. Kine is brave and heroic, if something of a braggart.
- Xenofiction: Told mostly from the point of view of Kine the weasel, though there are few chapters from the viewpoint of the humans who share his world.
- You Dirty Rat!: Rats are portrayed harshly (and rather unrealistically). The author refers to males and females as boars and sows, when the correct terms are bucks and does - this is either a mistake, or a deliberate device to make them seem more off-putting.
