Izure Shinwa no Ragnarok (いづれ神話の放課後戦争) is a light novel series written by Namekojirushi and illustrated by Youta. Ten years ago, gods from seven mythologies possessed the bodies of humans and ravaged the planet in their war. During this Myth War, Raika Shinzen and his sister were cornered by a god, who injured the former and kidnapped the latter. As a teenager, Raika attends school on Laurasia Island, an artificial island managed by the organization, Eucharistia. The students there are supposedly being quarantined due to being cursed by the gods, but in reality, they're all marked to be potential hosts for gods in the next Myth War. Raika ends up being partially possessed by the Celtic god Balor, who gives him the ability to place other gods under a Geas if he defeats them. With this power, Raika hopes to take revenge on the gods and find his kidnapped sister.

This light novel series contains examples of:

  • Big Bad: The current overseer of Ragnarok is Zeus. He also has a personal conflict with Raika due to possessing his sister.
  • Church Militant: Raika and Maria are working for the Holy Church and are investigating Laurasia for them, due to their rivalry with Eucharista.
  • Death of Personality: Once a human is possessed by a god, their original personality and soul get overwritten completely. The only exceptions are Raika, who is protected by a cross from the church and Charlotte, whose possession by Brunhild is incomplete due to being forced by Freyja.
  • Go-Karting with Bowser: The gods are not allowed to fight during the day, which means they attend class together.
  • Grand Theft Me: The premise of the series is that humans are getting possessed by gods to fight their proxy wars. These humans are known as Divine Apotheosis.
  • Hyde Plays Jekyll: Many of the gods are able to imitate their human hosts to give off the impression of being normal students, thus keeping their identities a secret for the sake of winning the war. Though this is played with because some of the students were possessed since the first day of school.
  • Jerkass Gods: The gods are willing to use human hosts to fight their wars and are callous towards human lives. Brundhild is a downplayed example, since she has a sense of honor as a knight despite looking down on humans.
  • Necessarily Evil: Combined with I Did What I Had to Do. Eucharista is working with the mythologies by providing a battleground and Divine Apotheosis candidates for them, but it's still preferable to letting the gods wage war elsewhere.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: In just three days, the gods managed to destroy a third of the Eurasian continent and kill five billion people.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: The gods realized too late that their conflict was destroying the very planet that they wanted to rule, so they formed an alliance with Eucharista to use Laurasia Island as a battleground.
  • The Reveal: Combined with First-Episode Twist. The epilogue of the first volume contains the worst possible revelation for Raika. His sister, Tenka Shinzen, is possessed by Zeus and is acting as the overseer of the current Ragnarok.
