Tropes include:

  • Action Girl: Tatiana is a trained warrior and vampire.
  • A Day in the Limelight: The Compendiums and the Serial novels are these for a number of secondary characters. Also Executable, College Arcane, and C.A.E.C.O. Some of these characters later graduate to main characters as part of their character development.
  • Always Chaotic Evil: Demons, naturally.
  • Battle Couple: Tatiana and Chris become this in the first book.
  • Beyond the Impossible: Many of the core main characters,' especially Chris's, feats are considered to be this.
  • Bodyguarding a Badass: The protagonist vampires employ human bodyguards. Justified because Vampires are weak in daylight, and they employ very competent humans for daytime security.
  • Broken Masquerade: The supernatural is exposed to the general populace in God Hammer.
  • The Chosen One: Chris is this but is in active denial of it.
  • Dhampyr: Tatiana was born of two vampires, so she's a unique example of her race. Apparently, it's only happened once in their history.
  • Give Geeks a Chance: Chris is a Downplayed Trope example of this as he's shy and retiring but also a huge badass who looks like a model.
  • Glorified Sperm Donor: This is how Tatiana feels about her father. He does try to kill her at the end of the first book.
  • The Government: The U.S. government serves as secondary antagonists for most of the series, wanting to either control or kill Chris due to his vast power and free will. They've attempted to kidnap his goddaughter at least twice to use her as a bargaining chip.
  • Government Agency of Fiction: The US government and NYPD both have divisions devoted to dealing with the supernatural.
  • It's Not You, It's My Enemies: Chris' reason for not having a girlfriend. He's afraid that they'll become targets for the demons he hunts. Thankfully, Tatiana can take care of herself.
  • Kryptonite Factor: Silver is a weakness most supernaturals share. Depleted uranium for Chris.
  • Nay-Theist: Chris doesn't believe in God not because he doesn't believe he exists but because he thinks God Is Evil for letting him live the life he does. Ironically, it's implied God is the source of his powers and provides a lot of covert help.
  • Nice Guy: Chris is remarkably well adjusted, polite, and kind for a guy who has been killing monsters since puberty.
  • Our Monsters Are Different: The monsters in Demon Accords are different.
  • Our Vampires Are Different: Vampires aren't undead, their bodily functions are just a great deal slower, which also results in lower body temperature. Rather than being harmed by sunlight, it just makes them tired. Most of a vampire's powers also come from harnessing dark energy.
  • Our Werebeasts Are Different: There are many species of "weres," wolves being the most common. Weres acquire the additional mass needed for their transformations by harnessing dark matter.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: The protagonist vampires consider themselves to be this. Yes, they drink human blood which makes them villians, but they make efforts to have willing donors and try not to kill humans, and justify this because they are trying to stay under the radar and uphold the Masquerade. When Broken Masquerade occurs, there is a revelation that they are not fated to be evil by nature and this causes angst in the wider vampire world.
  • Rage Against the Heavens: Chris considers his refusal to go to church to be a very mild example of this.
  • Sensual Slavs: Tatiana and her family are a group of very sexy vampire Russians.
  • Sexual Karma: Aggressive sexuality is part of the nature of vampires, were-beings, and witches. Also with the alpha male types in the military/police/criminal world. In contrast, the main characters and their circles all have rich relationships where both parties have agency and very much enjoy the relationships they are in (even if some of them don't work out).
  • Superpowerful Genetics: A witch's power is always hereditary. Most of them are female, males being significantly less powerful. Declan is not only an exception to this rule, but is also the most powerful witch on Earth.
  • Testosterone Poisoning: Many of the prior mentioned Government Agencies are filled with this. This causes conflicts with the protagonists, and these agents often make bad situations worse when they get into actual contact with the story antagonists (if they are not actually antagonists)
  • The Greys: In Demon Accords, they are known as Vorsook.
  • Vampires Are Sex Gods: They're all spectacularly beautiful and Tatiana is the World's Most Beautiful Woman.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: Weres can shift back and forth between human and animal forms at will. Some eventually learn to shift into a combat-oriented hybrid form.
