Cock-a-Doodle Dudley is a 1990 children's storybook by Bill Peet.

A rooster named Dudley is beloved by the sun and all the farm animals except for one, Gunther the goose. When Gunther tries to attack Dudley and chases him off, will the sun ever rise again?

This book includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Cock-a-Doodle Dawn: Dudley crows every morning at sunrise. It turns out his crowing does actually have some influence over the sun rising, because he's far more enthusiastic than the other roosters, which makes him a favorite with the sun.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Gunther hates all the positive attention Dudley always gets from all the other animals and ultimately chases him into Warwick's woods while trying to snatch him for a round of pecking.
  • I'm Not a Hero, I'm...: Dudley doesn't think he really has anything to do with the sun coming up; he sees his crowing as just a greeting, and is uncomfortable with all the fuss the other animals make over him.
  • Loved by All: Everyone on the farm (except Gunther) loves Dudley. Initially it seems that this is because they believe he raises the sun every morning, but after he reveals that no, he doesn't (or so he thinks), they're totally accepting of it and still like him as much as before.
  • Meaningful Name: The sun is given the name "Sol", which means "sun" in Spanish.
  • Total Eclipse of the Plot: A variation; Sol refuses to rise when Dudley doesn't crow one morning. It's 9:00 in the morning before Hector, the plowhorse, can find Dudley and return him to his place to crow up the sun.
