Clash of Hexennacht (Gekitotsu no Hexennacht) is chronologically the fifth entry of six in author Minoru Kawakami's universe, published from 2015 to 2017 for four volumes. The name of the era is OBSTACLE. It takes place in the future of The Ending Chronicle and Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere.
The Black Witch was sealed in the moon and can only be judged once a decade on the night of Hexennacht. The ones who can fight the Black Witch are the chosen magical girls who have won their battles. Mitsuru Horinouchi, the Eastern Japan representative who aims to be the strongest, happens across a girl with strange power who says her name is Kagami Kagami.
Clash of Hexennatch provides examples of:
- After the End: A significant part of Hexennatch's world was destroyed by the Black Witch ten years ago and the population was drastically reduced.
- Beach Episode: The starting chapters of Volume 2 are about Horinouchi, Kagami and Hunter going to the beach to train and have some summer fun.
- BFS: The sword Devices are HUGE.
- Clothing Switch: In the Halloween party of Volume 3, Horinouchi goes dressed as a holy knight while Kagami wears a Miko costume. Hunter points out they're dressed like the other's Combat Frame style. Apparently, Kagami did this intentionally to make them look like a couple.
- Familiar: Servants, small creatures made of ether that make contracts with Witches to allow them to extract ether from the Ley Lines and transform into a Combat Frame.
- Gray-and-Grey Morality: There's not a single purely evil character, not even the Black Witch, just girls with opposing motives and clashes based on emotional issues.
- Improbably Female Cast: 99% of named characters are female.
- Parent-Child Team: The Rank 1 is a duo formed by Fleur Shihouin and her mother the Headmaster Cerisier. They make a good combination by frequently swapping places, with Fleur handling the offense and Cerisier mainly taking care of the defense.
- Pygmalion Plot: Horinouchi is an inhabitant of one of the fictional worlds created by the Kagami sisters which came to life with the power of the Book of Creation. This makes Horinouchi technically a character and Kagami one of her authors, but neither of them minds that and fall in love normally.
- Random Power Ranking: The Witch Ranking System, which was created to decide who will be the witch to directly face the Black Witch in the upcoming Hexennatch.
- Rank Up: The plot is mainly about Horinouchi and Kagami beating the higher Witch Rankers to get promoted to Rank 1 and get the right to directly face the Black Witch during Hexennatch.
- Rewriting Reality: The stories written into the Book of Creation create alternate worlds.
- Sealed with a Kiss: Kagami and Horinouchi kiss in the penultimate chapter of the final volume after they manage to defeat Shouko and Kagami has to go back to her own world.
- Sensual Spandex: It wouldn't be a Minoru Kawakami work without it. Almost all the Forms of a Witch's Combat Frame are skintight bodysuits.
- The 'Verse: Clash of Hexennatch takes place in the OBSTACLE era, the fifth of Kawakami's six-stage universe. Although, the setting takes place in an Alternate Universe created by Shouko Kagami with the Book of Creation. The "real world" where Kagami and Shouko originate from is apparently the same world as Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere and The Ending Chronicle.
- World of Action Girls: In this setting, women are the only ones able to use offensive spells while the men can only use passive ones. As a result, about every woman in the world is a Magical Girl Warrior.
