A series following a group of damaged high school students struggling with feelings of love. The first two books tell the story of Lake Monroe and Keiran Masters. They met when they were children and Keiran became a rather dark version of a pigtail puller. At the beginning Keiran had been in juvie for a year for a crime he did not commit and thinks that Lake set him up. He is determined to get his revenge by 'ruining' her.

Cale Chambers tried to force his son to marry a woman he does not care for.

- Casual Kink: Keiran spanks Lake on two separate occasions and often ties her hands with his belt. It is implied that Keenan and Sheldon enjoy it as well.

- Crazy Jealous Guy: Keiran goes nuts if anyone as much as looks at Lake. When Lake needs to distract him from making a perfect score at bowling she pretends to admire another guy. Same goes for Dash toward Willow.

- Disappeared Dad: Mitch Masters, unfortunately he does not stay that way. John Masters also is away most of the year, causing Keiran and Keenan to be unsupervised and get up to no good. Mr. Monroe, Lake's father and his wife have been missing for nearly ten years.

- Parents as People: John Masters is an absentee parent but he is dealing with a lot of guilt over Keiran's childhood, Sophia's disappearance and the stress of keeping Mitch away. Keiran and Keenan do not make it easy either, with their propensity to get into trouble. Lake's Aunt Carissa has not noticed that her niece has been horribly bullied for a decade. Willow's mother Mrs. Waters is rather indifferent to her children particularly her daughter in favor to looking after her husband, but she was impregnated and abandoned. Likely feels grateful to Mr. Waters for accepting her and another man's child.
- Property of Love: What the boys want the girls to be. Too bad for them the gals are a bit too strong minded.
- Oblivious to Love: It takes Lake quite a while to realize what everyone knows. That Keiran has a thing for her.
- Questionable Consent: How Keiran's and Lake's sexual relationship begins. He likely would have not touched her had she said no but she never felt like she could refuse. In Breaking Love he admits to Willow that what he did to Lake was rape.
- Made a Slave: Keiran since he was a baby.
- Manly Gay: Quentin and Jesse. Keiran is flabbergasted when he finds out.
- Meaningful Name: Keiran means black or dark. Perfect for this brooding bad boy with a dark and tormented past.
- Missing Mom: Sophia Blackwood. Keiran and Keenan's mother. Mrs. Monroe, Lake's mother.
- No Periods, Period: Lake is never shown menstruating but she and Sheldon do have a conversation about their periods much to Keenan's disgust.
- Really Gets Around: Keenan is quite the man whore much to Sheldon's distress.
- Rich Bitch: Melissa Chambers full stop. Also Rosalyn.

- Stockholm Syndrome: One explanation for Lake's feelings for Keiran, other than him being hot like burning.
