Leitmotif / Lost

Go To

Every character on Lost has a theme. Some have as many as eight. Locations and abstract ideas receive motifs as well.

  • Themes representing abstract ideas include:
    • Hollywood and Vines, also known as the "travelling theme", which is pretty much guaranteed to play in any season finale or whenever the cast has gathered together to trek across the island towards some sort of climactic encounter.
    • The Life and Death theme is an absolutely beautiful theme that plays whenever someone dies. A particularly epic/sad version plays in the final moments of the show as Jack staggers through the bamboo grove and dies.
    • "There's No Place Like Home", which starts out as a theme for the Oceanic Six before becoming associated with the concept of home in general.
  • Character themes include:
    • John Locke has four: his hunter theme, tragedy theme, mystery theme and destiny theme.
    • Kate's main musical motif is Patsy Cline music, which always appears in episodes revolving around her. She also has "Kate's Motel", a frenetic Psycho-inspired string piece representing her life on the run.
    • Sayid's theme is one of the most instantly recognizeable themes because of its distinct melody and how it's often a violin solo. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
    • "Catch a Falling Star" is used to represent Claire, with a creepy Dark Reprise playing over her, Sayid and Kate strolling through the aftermath of the Temple massacre in Season 6.
    • Charlie's theme consists of many low cello notes strung together beautifully. An especially emotional version of it plays over the Life and Death Theme while Charlie drowns in the Looking-Glass Station
    • "Make Your Own Kind of Music" by Mama Cass is always associated with Desmond, because it played during the famous opening of Season 2 when he was introduced, and again in another episode involving him. In an example of Fridge Brilliance, the title of the song actually applies to the fact that Desmond, in time travel scenarios, is the only person who can "make his own kind of music," or change future events — a concept that wouldn't be revealed for three years. He also has two major recurring motifs, the first doubling as a love theme for him and Penny, while the second appears in Season 6 and represents his mission to "awaken" his friends in the Flash-sideways.
    • Ben's theme, "Dharmacide", is another common one, with the eerie main notes playing during most of his "scheming" moments, while the emotional part of the song is played in his "redeeming" moments.
    • Juliet is often associated with Petula Clarke's "Downtown" which she plays in three of her centric episodes, but also has her own instrumental theme in the series' score, titled "Ocean's Apart".
    • Jacob's theme gets used quite a lot considering it's only introduced at the end of Season 5. It later shifts to represent Jack and Hurley after they take over Jacob's role as protector of the Island.
    • The Man in Black has two, a Dark Reprise of Locke's destiny theme, representing him in his Locke form, and one representing his original form.
  • Group and location themes include:
