Just For Fun / Opposites Attract: The Dating Game

Go To

Hello, and welcome to Opposites Attract: The Dating Game. We aim to match seemingly impossible couples, such as an Ice Person and one who likes Playing with Fire. The goal is to seek out two trope personifications, and match them together! Fun, right?

The game is simple, you take two tropes that are opposite and make them a couple. Then you make up a story about how they interact as partners, and their dynamic. For bonus points, find a couple in fiction that matches the dynamic. But it should be the trope personifications themselves being a couple. It can also be any trope you want and not just personality tropes.

Here are the Rules:

    open/close all folders
    Couple Standards
  • A description should include a quick summary of each half (or member in some cases) of the couple. first date, what the couple likes to do together, the possible problems, and their current status, which means that at the very minimum, 4 paragraphs are needed. More can be added, but they will have to relate to the couple.
  • Instead of having the trope name be the names of the characters, an anagram is recommended. There is an exception for tropes like Miles Gloriosus though, as they are already proper names.
  • Minor references are allowed, but do not advertise anything. Self promotion is especially not allowed.
  • Rule of Cautious Editing Judgement is also in play here. While it may be understandable to have controversial things in a description in the case of couples made up of political tropes or anything similar, do not cross the line that will cause fights. Please be careful. Keep politics and other touchy issues out of couples not related to them at all.
  • One Steve limit is in play here too. A character cannot have the same full name as another. Other than that, it's fine.
  • The first paragraph needs to explain how they are opposites.
    Couple Approvals
  • You cannot make another version of a couple once they are paired together, unless you are remaking them.
  • Even if a trope had already been paired with another, they can still be paired with others.
  • You need one net vote to consider a couple approved, one to add them in 3 days, 2 in 24 hours, and 3 to add them instantly.
    Miscellaneous
  • Do not link the couple on their original trope pages, nor mention it. If you see anything like this on a trope, remove it.
  • Do not post a draft more than twice a day without changes. The minimum for a change is an heavily changed or new paragraph.
  • If you need help coming up with a couple, look at a tropes' playing with page and see if there is a pothole to an inverted trope. Or stay on the main page and look at contrasting tropes. There's also the Opposite Tropes page in the fun pages as well.

To submit a couple to be added to the page, please post a draft of them and their interaction on the thread. Once they are approved, add them to the page. Be aware that you may have some criticism directed toward your idea, and that's okay. Sometimes great.

Sidney Vaughn, the Shrinking Violet and Alice Williams, the Attention Whore
Sidney Vaughn and Alice Williams
  • Sidney Vaughn is a shy person who rarely goes to parties or crowded places. Sidney prefers to spend time at the library reading books. Sidney also loves gardening, having grown many things including the best pumpkins anyone's seen. Alice Williams is a person who loves attention. Alice will do anything to get it, including loud stunts and disturbances. Alice is a social media influencer who posts everyday to get more followers. They both met each other on this game show to find love.
  • Their first date...was awkward, to say the least. Alice used it as a way to "come out" to her own fans and boost followers, while Sidney struggled to even speak to her due to her status. It was overall good though, as when Alice calmed down with all the live-streaming and excessive chatting, Sidney found it easier to talk to her. They hit it off, and helped each other during challenges, well, except when it would jeopardize Alice's reputation...but that's besides the point. The game show ended with them being voted out by Martin Brown via manipulation. Despite the loss, they both comforted each other with their newfound love.
  • Both of them like hanging out at the park together, with Sidney reading a book under the tree while Alice blasts loud music to dance to. They also share a fondness for sweets, with Sidney baking pumpkin pies for both of them to share. Their current status is still dating for now. Both of them aren't sure if it will last long term but find that they do like each other a bit. Alice admires Sidney for always listening to her talking and always knows what she's feeling. Sidney likes Alice for always being honest with her feelings and openness to try new things.
  • In the end though...they struggle to connect. Alice jumps at way too many opportunities to be in the spotlight, much to Sidney's dismay. Sidney likes to relax in quiet, isolated place where there is barely anyone, while Alice is extremely bored in similar environments. Alice frequently drags herself into the spotlight along with Sidney, and always tries to make her act in a way that would get the most attention. While they do have some things in common, the relationship is a bit strained. They will need to learn to respect each other's preferences.
Tina Burton, the Walking Tech Bane and Terrance Fox, the Walking Tech Fix
Tina Burton and Terrance Fox
  • Tina Burton is a woman from the country side who has recently moved into a city. She prefers to be outside, and play around. She has an interest in technology, but is unable to use them because well...the stuff just stops working as soon as she touches it. Because of this, she tends to shy away from tech. Terrance Fox is your average IT guy, except for one thing. With some simple clicks and taps (sometimes punches), he can get anything to work. He has taken advantage of this to work in a prestigious company and get lots of money. His home is filled with all sorts of modern devices.
They both frequent the same cafe.
  • Tina Burton eventually reached out to Terrance Fox after having some trouble with a computer. He fixed it for her, and this cycle repeated. Astonished by the frequency of how many times she's walked in with broken devices, he tried to get to know her better. Their first date cleared up a lot of things, but it was a bit slow because of how socially inept Terrance Fox was. After a while, Tina Burton purposefully broke Terrance Fox's phone secretly, and got him to a park. Funny thing is, it was the first time he's had a proper amount of sun for extended time. While he didn't enjoy it at first, he eventually warmed up.
  • They spend their time together fixing each other's problems, and showing each other a piece of their world. Terrance Fox tries to help Tina Burton use devices to no avail, and Tina Burton takes him out for physical activities. On the rare times Terrance Fox tries to shut down something completely but can't, Tina Burton is always there to help. When Tina Burton has something to do online, Terrance Fox helps her. They formed a mutually helpful bond. Tina Burton can finally get into tech, while Terrance Fox can start to live life away from the keyboard.
  • They both love each other despite getting on the other's nerves from time to time. They both feel like their worlds are incomplete without the other, and are almost always seen together. While still having some hurdles in the relationship such as when one messes something up for the other, they usually get over it fairly quick.
Betha F. Dawn, the Back From The Dead and Killian O. Foster, the Killed Off For Real
Betha Francis Dawn and Killian Oz Foster

  • Betha was brought back to life by her lover, Killian, but the process made himself unable to return alive. Before, she lived a relatively simple, content life. Her friends agree that her best quality is bouncing back whenever life got her down, even when she outlived her family. She met Killian as her to-be-repeat and most understanding customer. She asked why he came so often, and thus he confessed. He loved her most for her kindness, optimism, and patience with her clients, while she claimed she just made sure to do a good job. With some feedback from her friends, she later accepted and returned his affections.
  • They told each other a great many things, Betha her fond memories of the past and Killian his plans for the present and future. Betha's drive lies in living to honor those she lived alongside with. Killian confided his list of life goals to her, some oddly mundane, and some extra achieving. One date night, he arrived with a letter for her to be left in her home, only to be read after the date was over. They had a wonderful time together, although his smile seemed sadder than usual, but he dismissed it. Unfortunately, the theatre caught fire, and everyone escaped, except for them.
  • She awoke in a hospital, unable to believe that Killian was nowhere to be found. Besides the staff saying it was a miracle that she was alive and mostly unscathed, they could only provide so many condolences before sending her home. She then read the expository letter which explained Killian's true nature in great detail, but the simple introduction struck her most: "I hope you can forgive me, but I have not left you. I've granted you a gift; you cannot die before you decide your time. I can't control what you do with it, but I believe you will use it well."
  • Betha now understands that Killian cannot return to the living as she did as he granted his life-force to her, the process of which means not even his body can be recovered. She mends her heart not by locking away her memories with him, but embracing them by living out the goals he so wished. Whether they are to value the simple things in life as they are or to accomplish something greater for public or personal benefit, she commits to them as if Killian could experience what he wanted in life through her. She hopes to reunite with him someday, though she knows what she must sacrifice in order to do so.
