Doubutsu Sentai Go-Busters (Animal Sentai Go-Busters) was a sort of sequel for the 36th Super Sentai Series Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters.
Taking place in an Alternate Universe were Messiah was never created, the scientists weren't sent to the subdimension, and Hiromu, Yoko and Ryuji never obtained their special abilities and were able to live a peaceful life.
Cut to 13 years later. In a world were Vaglass did not exist, Hiromu becomes a student teacher at Kido agriculture High School with Yoko as his student, Ryuji as his senpai, Kuroki as vice principal and Masato Jin as the Head Laborer at the school's field. During Hiromu's first day, Earth is attacked by the Machine Empire Mecharia leaded by the Machine Empress Tranji Star with the objective to convert earth's population into machines.
With the arrival of Mecharia, Jin and Kuroki reveal to the others that the reason they left their research on Enetron was the discovery of the Machine Empire's existence, choosing to develop a team that would be able to fight them the day they finally arrived on Earth.
Joined by the Mysterious Roid J (strongly implied to be the one from the original series), they fight against Mecharia as Doubutsu Sentai Gobusters.
The Go-busters are:
- Hiromu Sakurada/Red Cheeta: The Hero. At the start of the series he joins Kido agriculture High School as a student teacher.
- Ryuji Iwasaki/Blue Gorilla: The Lancer. The Hot-Blooded teacher in charge of overseeing Hiromu's work.
- Yoko Usami/Yellow Bunny: The Heart. The Ordinary High-School Student.
- Jin Masato/Gold Beetle: The Smart Guy and Friend to All Living Things. He created the technology the team uses.
- J/Silver Stag: The Big Guy. A Mysterious Roid already able to transform into a Go-Buster before meeting the others. He has a big secret the others are unaware of. Later revealed to be the original J who created this Alternate Universe alongside Nick.
Three new members eventually join the team. They are:
- Rika Sakurada/Pink Cat: technically the Sixth Ranger, although she does not join the team until later. A mysterious burglar who is capable of piloting the team's robots without problem. she is Hiromu's sister, who had disappeared in episode 3 while piloting a new Megazord model, in reality, she was kidnapped by the Machine Empire in an effort to transform her into an anti-buster unit. She managed to escape, but not before the empire managed to transform her into a cyborg.
- Atsushi Doumyouji/Green Hippopotamus: The official Sixth Ranger and The Rival to Hiromu. who eventually sacrifices himself to save Hiromu, Ryuji and Yoko from the villain's control.
- Kuroki/ Black Puma: Vice-principal of Kido agriculture High School and commander of the team. After Atsushi's death, he decides to take up arms himself too support the team.
Recurring Super Sentai tropes:
- Affectionate Parody: The series as a whole is one to Showa-era Sentais with goofy attacks and commanders that don't take themselves too seriously.
- Crossover: They have a crossover with the original Go-busters.
- Killed Off for Real: Atsushi dies 22 episodes after his debut.
- Love Triangle: One between Hiromu, Yoko and Atsushi.
