  • Abraxas (Hrodvitnon): In this Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) fanfiction, Ichi/Eldest Brother (Ghidorah's middle head) personally ate Vivienne Graham alive, and then wanted her resurrected as an Inhuman Human for him to torment further, because she unwittingly hit his Berserk Button just by building a facility around the glacier which Ghidorah was frozen inside. Once Ghidorah's minds have regenerated, Ghidorah continues displaying a vested interest in Vivienne, not least due to observing her and San's capacity for Ghidorah-like Unstoppable Rages, and wants Vivienne in particular to become just as bad as Ghidorah.
  • In Ace Combat: The Equestrian War, Firefly has a grudge against Black Star and it's one of the reasons she returns to Equestria.
  • In Advice and Trust, Misato wants to destroy the Angels because she blames them for her father's death.
  • The case in the NUMB3RS story BrothersInArms3rdgal is this for Charlie, as Don's old fugitive recovery partner, Billy Cooper, is pursuing a suspect named Sammy Holloway and the man's younger brother, Grayson, is a student of his, and Charlie has a hard time believing that Grayson would be involved and it gets worse when Don ends up being a hostage.
    • The Best Laid Plans, the case for the entire Eppes family, as Breshers, who was previously put in prison for poor building materials and was found liable due to Alan's testimony, is found dead with Alan next to the body and Don and the team have to find the real killer with Charlie's help.
  • Clash of the Elements: In Part 2, Gemini has this with Smithy, Luigi with Dimentio, and Alpha with Cackletta
  • Transformers Animated: Cybertronian Genesis: Optimus' continued struggle with Megatron has never truly been personal, at least on his side — his determination is ultimately fueled by his desire to protect his friends, never for personal glory or even for duty. Megatron in turn outright despises him for robbing him of his self-assuredness, his need for control over any given situation. So their conflict was only personal on one side. And then Megatron had to go and kiss Blackarachnia. Suddenly, Optimus had no issue trying to offline him by strangling him with his axe.
  • Code Prime
    • Megatron becomes the most personal enemy for many of the characters in the setting.
      • Lelouch initially hates Megatron for manipulating Suzaku to join the Decepticons, but after causing the SAZ Massacre and ruining Euphemia's benevolent and humanitarian image, Lelouch vehemently swears that Megatron will pay. It later becomes even more personal when Megatron uses Marianne's corpse as the battery for his Dark Queen Knightmare.
      • Suzaku comes to develop an extremely personal grudge against Megatron as well for manipulating him and kidnapping Euphemia and causing the SAZ Massacre. After Dreadwing dies, Suzaku swears to make Megatron pay.
      • The Decepticons' actions in kidnapping Euphie and causing the SAZ Massacre leads to Cornelia having it out for Megatron, as well as Airachnid.
      • Megatron's actions above, and others in the story, further deepens the personal enmity he already has with Optimus.
    • Airachnid also has her own share of personal grudges. In addition to Arcee having it out for her for killing Tailgate, Kallen also comes to hate Airachnid as well, being Arcee's partner.
      • She also becomes a personal enemy for Suzaku for not only slaughtering people in the ghettos for fun, but also for kidnapping and nearly killing Euphie. Likewise, Euphie comes to hate Airachnid to the point that she wants nothing more than for her to die.
      • The feeling is also mutual for Airachnid, who has a grudge against Kallen for blowing up her ship — with her in it, and she later adds Suzaku to her list after he rescues Euphie and Cornelia from her and helps Dreadwing deal her the most grievous wounds she's suffered to date.
  • Collateral has the Kwamis great hatred of the Incubators come from this. In the past the Incubators had worked with the Kwami for finding potential Magical Girls to help people, but did not tell them about the side effects. The Kwami, who are by nature helpful and love humanity, were horrified when they found out and even the laziest and most amoral of the Kwami would destroy an Incubator on sight and despise them for it centuries, if not milleniums, laters.
  • A Crown of Stars: Shinji and Asuka want to topple Jinnai because he is a blood-thirsty dictator and warlord who has taken control of the UN government and has a stockpile of nukes, but they have very important personal reasons to want to destroy him, too: after the end of the world, Jinnai and his former boss forced Shinji and Asuka to work for them. They abused them, mistreated them and turned Asuka into their plaything for four years.
  • Power Girl story A Force of Four provides several examples:
    • Badra wanted to keep Wonder Woman alive to force her to witness the Earth's destruction before killing her.
    • As far as Fury was concerned, Badra was just another loony whom her mother Wonder Woman had defeated before her time. Then Badra bashed her mother's face, and Fury promised to tear Badra's face off.
  • Intrepid: Anne blames the ABB for her family breaking. So now she has powers, she wants to break them.
"The ABB broke my family. I wanted to break them. I will break them. I want the ABB dismantled and gone."
  • The Immortal Game: General Esteem being Rarity's father naturally evokes this between them. However, it's Twilight who ends up having a personal vendetta against him, as he's the one who turned her into Nihilus.
  • Mare of Steel: Both Zod and Brainiac end up with this with Rainbow Dash/Supermare. Especially Brainiac, who nearly kills her mother.
  • In Kwami Magi Homura Magica Homura originally didn't see Monarch as her problem, just as someone to be wary of when she was in Paris trying to get Ladybug and Cat Noir's Miraculouses for her own wish. At worst she just had to avoid being akumatized by him and maybe afterwards she would be expected to help the two heroes take him down if Madoka insisted on it. Then Monarch followed her back to Mitakihara in the previous timeloop and started akumatizing people there, including Madoka. The very next loop, killing Monarch ends up on Homura's 'to-do list' for every timeloop going forward, and when she manages to get Monarch's identity out of Felix, Monarch only lives for as long as it takes Homura to get to his house and shoot him while he sleeps.
  • Magical Pony Lyrical Twilight:
  • In Mega Man: Defender of the Human Race, Roll has a personal vendetta against Wily for killing Doc.
    • Mr. Black has one against Wily for killing his wife, Tonya.
    • As of episode 11, Wily has one against Dr. Light running even deeper than before.
  • The Night Unfurls:
    • The Olga-Celestine feud. Olga developed a hatred towards the human race due to the enslavement of the dark elves on the hands of human slavers. Seeing Eostia as the embodiment of all the wrongs that befell her kind, she declared war against the country. Celestine responded in kind, leading to a centuries-long conflict, but she was most concerned with getting her friend back.
    • Grace's grudge towards Olga is due to the former's homeland, Loraine, being sacrificed to the Always Chaotic Evil orcs by the latter. She experienced the death of her husband, was displaced from their home, and was enslaved by the Leaping Lizards band (the last bit seems to be Adapted Out in the remastered version). She's not alone in that regard — the story later reveals there are surviving refugees from Loraine, and they are not happy with Olga for more or less the same reason.
    • The war against the Black Dogs becomes more and more personal for the Seven Shields. The two parties used to have close ties with each other due to their cooperation during the war against Olga, but the main events of the story have the PMC group turning against them as a Military Coup. Fortress cities under the Shields' protection are under attack one by one for the entirety of the series. Specifically, Maia's Rape as Drama, Luu-Luu's demise, and the Mandeville Schismnote  are considered to be major blows, events that The Alliance will never stomach.
    • Claudia's bad blood towards Kyril becomes more personal after her husband Klaus, who is suspected of being a traitor, is put under protective custody by the Hunter.
    • Kyril generally has a "Nothing Personal" attitude to the blood he spilt before and during the war, but there are two occasions where he attributes a personal reason to the conflict. The first occasion (where the plot starts escalating) is the elimination of Shamuhaza. Kyril's motive for his elimination goes beyond averting a major disasterhe considers this his duty to uphold the Masquerade, to make sure the shameful deeds of the Healing Church remain buried, so none would suffer like he did in his Dark and Troubled Past, like what happened to Yharnam and its citizenry. The second occasion is his first death in the fanfic. He finds it unacceptable that he lost an eye and Celestine is scarred due to his "assassination", sending him in an Unstoppable Rage and overkill the assassin responsible. He even lampshades how petty the second occasion is.
    • From Alicia's perspective in the remastered version, Kyril's mannerisms towards her reeks of disrespect, hence a personal affront to herself and her honour as a knight. She intends to reclaim her honour by besting him during his Trial by Combat, which ended up in vain. Alicia doesn't take her loss well, leading her to assault Soren as Revenge by Proxy.
  • This is the trope that Zuma is against Stone for seemingly killing his first family in Segment 1 of the story.
  • Hardboiled Detective Fakir Romeiras in An Uncommon Witness dedicates his life in the purse of the Corvo family because they murdered his parents. Still, as a detective working with the police, he needs to keep it secret to avoid getting out of the investigation.
  • In I Against I, Me Against You, Rainbow Dash seems to have decided this in regards to the Meta After it kills Derpy
  • Thousand Shinji:
    • Before deploying the Evas to destroy Sahaquiel, Misato reveals Shinji and Asuka that she hates the Angels because her father died when Second Impac happened.
    • Asuka wanted to chop Matarael into pieces because it hurt Shinji.
Screw thinking like that. This Angel made it personal by hurting Shinji; it’s the one in for a world of hurt.
  • In Children of an Elder God, Misato wants to kill Cthulhu and co to avenge her father.
  • In chapter 17 of Once More with Feeling, Misato risked Asuka’s life during a mission. Later on, she apologized and explained the younger girl that she was obsessed with destroying the Angels because her father died during Second Impact, and she wants to avenge him.
  • Lampshaded in Infinity when Lindy fights Precia. While she is arresting them for their crimes, it's more because they hurt her children.
Lindy: At this point, I suppose I should be telling you something appropriately neutral and law enforcement-esque. But I've already used 'you're under arrest', and frankly speaking I'm not neutral towards you at all.
  • In This Bites!, unlike the rest of Baroque Works' agents who hold no real grudge against the Straw Hats, the Unluckies have made it clear they will only retire after they've brutally killed Cross and Soundbite. They let go of that grudge in a canonical omake set during the Sabaody Revolution Arc, however; as they explain it, their main grudge was over being beaten by someone so weak, but considering how much stronger Cross has gotten over the course of the story, they're willing to let bygones be bygones.
  • The main conflict in Soul Chess is between main protagonist Lelouch Lamperouge and main villain Sosuke Aizen. The two outright despise each other with every fiber of their being. Lelouch hates Aizen for killing his mother-figure Mari Akari and her lieutenant Yuna Homura (who Lelouch was in love with) along with engineering the exile of several of his comrades and friends. In turn, Aizen resents him for constantly foiling his plans and having the audacity to doubt his superiority. The latter bothers him so much that he goes into a Villainous Breakdown when Lelouch refuses to acknowledge him at the end of their second confrontation.
  • In the Discworld fanfic Clowning is a Serious Business by A.A. Pessimal, Miss Alice Band becomes this when her girlfriend is stabbed and left for dead in the doorway of the Assassins' Guild. Other Assassins are expressly warned off the retributory contract as it is clearly understood this one has Alice's name on it. She is even warned not to let anger dictate her actions when she signs the contract. She then goes on to slay two of her lover's attackers with something verging on Extreme Prejudice, but is explicitly advised that one needs to be kept alive for just long enough to be interrogated as to who employed them and what their motives are. She reluctantly complies, accepting that his interrogation will be very unpleasant indeed. But is allowed to complete the contract afterwards - in cold blood, this time.
    • And in the tale Hyperemesis Gravidarum, it is the turn of Fiery Redhead Assassin Johanna Smith-Rhodes. A gang with a reason to hate the Smith-Rhodes family is at large in Ankh-Morpork. In quick sucession they murder a Wizard believing him to be her husband; wound her uncle; attempt to murder her cousin, poison her pet dogs; and wound her sister. Believing her sister dead, Johanna, although over eight months pregnant note  goes for the ringleader. Who discovers a pregnant Assassin with a personal reason to see him dead - is dangerous. note
  • In the Doctor Who/Underworld crossover Doctor in the Underworld, the Tenth Doctor initially regards the discovery of the war as just another crisis for him to resolve, but acknowledges that it’s become personal when he recognises the vampire servant girl Erika as none other than Reinette Poisson, Madame de Pompadour, his own former lover.
  • In Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Supergirl crossover The Vampire of Steel, Zol-Am hates Supergirl because her uncle discovered and designed his prison, and he looks forward to suck her dry.
The blonde girl was there again, investigating. With Supergirl. He never suspected she had such connections. But that only made it more gratifying.
Like all those who came from where he did, he had a grudge against the cursed El family. The only one they hated more than Supergirl was Superman. She’d be a fine appetizer, and the blonde would be a chaser.
  • Rivals Series: Initially, Yuuri's hatred of Viktor was thought to be a result of professional jealousy; Yuuri, like any other skater, wants to be the best, and Viktor was the nigh-insurmountable obstacle for that goal. However, as the years went on, most people (correctly) speculated that his grudge was actually this as Yuuri was kind and courteous to literally every competitor not named Viktor Nikiforov, even those who occasionally beat him, like Chris. Ironically, the only people who don't seem to see it are Viktor's coach and rinkmates, who are too blinded by their affections for Viktor and dismissive of fan speculation to acknowledge the possibility that Viktor might have actually done something to earn Yuuri's hatred — even Viktor realizes that Yuuri's grudge was something beyond mere jealousy, though he didn't know how deep the pain actually ran until Yuuri straight up told him about it.
  • In Nobody Dies, Misato really, really hates the Angels due to her father's death. She makes sure to explain it to ADAM before shooting him in the chest with the Positron Cannon while on foot.
    ADAM: I REMEMBER YOU.
Misato: Good. Because I sure remember you too.
    ADAM: WHAT ARE YOU?
Misato: My name is Misato Katsuragi. Lieutenant Colonel of NERV. Daughter of Shiro Katsuragi, the stupid son of a bitch who woke you up. I am the daughter of a murdered man and the only human being to look on you with their own eyes and live to tell about it. I am the right hand of retribution and the last human being you will ever see, you glow in the dark mother f_er. Now smile asshole. Because this... (throws the 'fire' switch on the positron cannon) is my seventeen years of f_ing payback!
  • In Hellsister Trilogy, fighting Darkseid became a personal matter rather than a matter or principle for Supergirl after the ruler of Apokolips attempted to kill and/or enslave her cousin, her lover and her friends several times over. Likewise, Berserker looks forward to kill Supergirl after she killed his mother in self-defense.
Berserker: I will avenge my mother’s death. I will avenge your honor. I will make her pay for blocking the True Path. I WILL DESTROY THE SUPERGIRL.
  • Atonement has Amy Dallon, who makes sure that Crawler meets a gruesome end after he kills her father just as she was getting to understand him.
  • Son of the Sannin:
    • In this story, Sasuke Uchiha has it in big time for Obito, after learning that he was the one who instigated the Uchiha Insurrection, and later forcing him into a fight with Naruto almost getting them to kill one another. It later extends to Akatsuki as a whole when Itachi ends up in the hospital in the aftermath of a failed jinchuriki retrieval mission.
    • Played for Laughs with Fu, who declares her intention to defeat Gaara during the Chunin Exam finals to avenge the loss of her crush Shino during the preliminaries. Said "loss" was him forfeiting less than a minute in after realizing he had no chance of victory and sufferring no more than a few superficial cuts.
    • While Danzo has made pretty much everyone in and out of universe to hate his guts, in-story the one who probably has it the most against the man is Shisui Uchiha. Not only did Danzo forcibly steal his eye, preventing him from stopping the Uchihas' rebellion without bloodshed, but Danzo made the mistake of trying to kidnap his infant son and daughter to raise them as his personal puppet Root agents.
    • By Chapter 113, Toneri has racked more than a few reasons to earn Hinata's hatred. In order: trying to orchestrate her kidnapping when she was still a child, repeatedly attempting to kill Naruto and force her (and her sister) to marry him, and using her deceased father's eyes to awaken the Tenseigan and fight her.
  • In Kara of Rokyn, Lex Luthor blames Superman for everything bad has happened to him, which includes: his lab burning down back when they were teenagers and destroying his greatest discovery as well as his hair; his parents disowning him; his wife and son dying. The fact that Superman wasn't responsible for or had nothing to do with those tragedies matters nothing to Luthor.
  • In The Road to be a Pokemon Master, when May asked Ash why does he feels the need to stop Teams Aqua and Magma personally instead of letting the authorities handle them, Ash tells her about his past with Team Rocket and how much they made his friends and family suffer, and thus he can't stand the thought of more criminal organizations running unopposed.
  • All Mixed Up!: Mariana Mag doesn't have any limits when it comes to who she attacks and anagrams, but she's definitely hellbent on getting rid of Oprah specifically as revenge for firing her.
  • Chasing Dragons: The primary Baratheon-Targaryen conflict is a deeply personal one for a few figures on both sides, mainly Ned, Arthur and Viserys. This is not the case with Robert, however, for whom it stopped being personal ever since the Sunset Company freed their first slave in Pentos.
  • In the Sixes and Sevens story Shadow of the Eagle, the team realize they're being menaced by Kenneth Crichton. Michael and Robby's group were associates of him in college, but cut ties during his unwanted pursuit of Edith Harker. When they realize he's hoping to do the same to Emily using his newfound vampiric abilities, they're even more determined to stop him.
    • Victor's fight against HYDRA and the Latverian royal family is fueled by the loss of his family and friends, along with the greater existential threat they pose to Latveria's Romani population. For that matter, Prince Rudolfo has made his conquest to drive the Romani population from Latveria personal because he blames Victor's parents for his own mother's death.
  • Vow of Nudity: Implied when the Star King gets so mad at Haara he stops using the Royal "We" and switches to singular pronouns during his Villainous Breakdown.
  • Hunters of Justice has the Titans and RWBY JNPR go through a solid month of hell due to Brother Blood's machinations, culminating in Trigon taking over Raven's body and almost killing the teams before he is forced out. End result, Nightwing is extremely pissed. When the Justice League offers to take the madman down, Dick refuses, saying that the Titans will stop him.
Nightwing: "No! We have enough able-bodied Titans and Remnantians here take him in ourselves. After what that bastard did to Raven, he is ours.”
  • Thanks, but no: Hawkmoth grows more frustrated each time a new hero appears to help defeat his akumas. He decides that once he defeats them and takes their Miraculous, he’ll use the Wish to make a world where they never exist.
  • My Hero Academia: Unchained Predator:
    • Shigaraki loathes the Slayer for brutally humiliating him and ripping off one of his arms. Just seeing a still image leads Shigaraki into a I hate you spiel.
    • Endeavor loathes the Slayer for being a Vigilante who brutalized him in a mad dash, rushing off to try and capture the Slayer in chapter 20... It doesn't go well for Enji...
    • The Slayer loathes the Steel Sabers for not only their crimes, but how they desecrated their corpses as if they were trophies. He ensures they don't come back to harm the heroes ever again.
      • He also declares war on the League of Villains for the Nomu program reminding him of the alternate UAC's Revenant Project, deeming them a sufficient threat that must be eliminated.
  • Metal Gear: Green: When Madam President hires all the African Warlords to destroy Outer Heaven, several of the warlords who had been dealing with Outer Heaven get up in arms because of this.
Warlord: Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, this is about the fuckers who’ve been a pain in my ass for weeks!?
Warlord 2: Pain in your ass! I’m down to a couple of islands because of them!
Warlord 3: Big fucking whoop, because of them I’ve got nothing but desert now!
