Iconic Character Forgotten Title / Super Smash Bros.

Thanks to the series' status as a Massive Multiplayer Crossover as well as its meme status, certain fighters in the Super Smash Bros. franchise are more popular or know about here than in their home games.

Super Smash Bros.

  • Because his game was a commercial failure and sold poorly when it first came out in the US, Ness was not very well known before he was added in the original Super Smash Bros. His appearance in the game, however, boosted his image massively, and it caused his game to become far more popular than it would have stayed if it wasn't for his Smash Bros. addition.
  • Not many people knew about Captain Falcon or his games until he was included in the Smash Bros. series. His enormous meme status in Smash Bros. made him an instant household name to the point where several fans of Falcon consider him to be an original Smash character. It doesn't help that the F-Zero series has been dormant since 2004, making Captain Falcon more obscure outside of Smash, until 2023 when a Nintendo Switch Online game came out.

Super Smash Bros. Melee

  • The Ice Climbers have only starred in one NES game from 1985, causing them to be largely forgotten about until their inclusion in Super Smash Bros. Melee, and later addition in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The fans were not happy when the eskimos were cut from Smash 4's roster due to development issues, but they returned in Ultimate, pleasing the fanbase again.
  • Sheik, in her home series, has only starred in Ocarina of Time, but Super Smash Bros. Melee made her a lot more popular with her speedy, agile movement, and impressive, ninja-like attacks. She has remained in the series since, improving her popularity higher.
  • Because he first appeared in Super Smash Bros. Melee before his home game, Roy already became much more well known in Smash Bros. over The Binding Blade.
