    Snufkin and Moomin

Books

  • This passage from Moominsummer Madness:
"Snufkin was his best friend. Of course, he also liked the Snork Maiden a lot but it can never be quite the same with a girl."
  • Also in Moominsummer Madness, Snufkin reflects on wanting to go on moonlight swims with Moomintroll.
  • Anytime Snufkin is away the word longing is used by Moomintroll quite a bit.

Comic

  • One arc surrounding Moomin and Little My searching for Snufkin has this exchange:
Little My: You look silly. Do you like him so much?
    Moomin: Er... I-I suppose so.
    Little My: Don't you know?
Moomin: (blushing) Yes, but one doesn't say it.
    • And once they find Snufkin, Moomin asks him what would've happened if he'd not found the campfire and followed the trail:
Snufkin: We wouldn't have met. Well... of course I would have made more camp-fires.

'90s series

  • The way Snorkmaiden and her brother talk about how much Moomin misses Snufkin in Episode 24 makes it sound like they're not merely friends...
Snorkmaiden: Moomin is pining for Snufkin!
Snork: Rubbish! Men don't pine for their friends!

Comet in Moominland (Movie)

  • Moominmamma giving Moomin a present, resulting in this exchange.
Moominmamma: There may be a day you will find someone to give this gift.
Moomin: No way! You mean girls? I'm not interested in girls.

Moominvalley

  • The whole series is practically dripping with Ho Yay between the two. From prolonged eye contact, close and personal comfort with each other, the profound sense of longing when they are parted, the way Moomintroll gets more excited and giddy when Snufkin is nearby, etc... They even hold hands hands on more than several occasions.
  • During what is supposed to be a romantic spring date with Snorkmaiden, Moomintroll simply can't stop thinking about Snufkin. As soon as she talks about how Snowdrop flowers herald the return of loved ones, his eyes immediately drift to Snufkin's usual meeting place, and he tunes out her voice, and even calls her "Snufkin" by mistake when she tries to get his attention.
Moomin: I'm sorry I didn't mean to ignore you it's just... he's been gone so long and I'll finally get to see him again. To hear about his adventures, (dreamy eyed) to listen to his new spring tune...
    Snorkmaiden: (Annoyed) Moomintroll.
Moomin: I'm sorry, I'm sorry!!! Okay until he comes back, I'm all yours. Total undivided attention from now on, promise! You are my whole world.
(Snorkmaiden leans in to embrace him, only to be dropped on her face when Moomin hears a twig snap)
    Moomin: SNUFKIN?!
  • It also may not be one-sided, as Snufkin himself admittedly thinks about Moomintroll constantly, though he tries to disguise his feelings as being platonic. It's most obvious in the Season 3 Episode "Lonely Mountain."
Snufkin: I think about you all the time...
    • Upon witnessing the northern lights, there's this exchange:
Snufkin: It would have been a shame to miss this.
Moomin: (looking directly at Snufkin) Yeah...
  • At the very beginning of "Thingumy and Bob," Moomintroll is woken up by Snufkin whistling for him. The first thing he does is check himself in the mirror to make sure he's presentable. And to make sure he hasn't changed back into a monster.

Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley

  • During the final level, Snufkin hurts his leg, so you instead play as Moomintroll as he gives Snufkin a piggyback ride. This leads to the following dialogue, which sounds quite flirty:
Moomintroll: I get to carry you for once!
Snufkin: You're strong! Have you been exercising in prison?

    Other
  • Pimple/Sorry-Oo is a dog who likes cats; this in an of itself is pretty non-subtle allegory, but in Moomins on the Riviera he befriends a male cat actually a dog but he doesn't mind, whom he snuggles with.
