The show may be aimed for the preschool demographic, but there are definitely plenty of moments that can be interpreted in a more interesting light. For example:

Sofia/Vivian

  • "The Shy Princess" has Sofia being paired up with Vivian for a school project, and she's revealed to be shy. Sofia, upon finding out what the class thinks of Vivian, is initially hesitant to see her. Upon seeing that she's a kind and creative person, the two of them instantly connect. The duet they have has them gazing lovingly into each other's eyes and holding hands. Vivian only even considers breaking out of her shell when Sofia gently prods her to, showing that she has the choice. At the end, they hold hands and look at each other when she opens up to others.note
  • Vivian's very next appearance in "Blue Ribbon Bunny" has the two of them instantly connecting when they meet up again.
  • In both "The Enchanted Science Fair" and "Scrambled Pets", they both act as the straight man in trying to make sure nothing goes wrong. Let's just say that they act like the only sane couple of the group in both cases.
  • The ending of "All The Sprite Moves" has Sofia and Vivian dancing together in the garden of her new castle.
  • "The Princess Prodigy" is definitely heavy on this. This episode has Baron Von Rocha purposefully stroking Vivian's ego so that he can get the musical magic from her mandolin. Sofia is the one who shows the most concern for Vivian's behavior, essentially acting like a lover trying to get her partner to act normally. When Vivian drives everyone away, they're both shown to be visibly crushed, and this kickstarts Vivian's realization that she's going too far. Just like at the beginning of the episode, the ending has them partnering up again during the band performance, and looking quite happy with each other.

Sofia/Lucinda

  • Sofia was the first person who gave Lucinda a chance. Naturally, she'd be grateful to her.
  • In "The Little Witch", after Sofia starts unlocking Lucinda's good side, they're inseparable. They give each other a loving look near the end.
  • In "Mom's The Word", Sofia meets up with Lucinda when they go on Mother's Day outings with their mothers. When Sofia asks her to help make sure that only she and her mother spend time, Lucinda asks her not to reveal to her mother that she's secretly a good witch who's friends with her. Replace "good witch" with "in a relationship" and "friend" with "girlfriend", and everything stays virtually the same.
  • "Cauldronation Day" shows this mostly near the end, but builds it up. This episode has Lucinda celebrating her Cauldronation, and asking Sofia to make sure her witch friends, Indigo and Lily, don't fight with each other. The latter two fight with each other to see who's the better friend to join her by her side, and Lucinda eventually settles on Sofia. Replace "friend" with "girlfriend", and it's virtually the same. Heck, Indigo and Lily do get a bit too close to her, and Sofia essentially acts like a worried lover for Lucinda.

Sofia/Ruby/Jade

  • With the history Sofia had with them before becoming royalty, there would definitely be some intimate moments among them.
  • "The Big Sleepover" has Sofia trying to show Amber and friends that Ruby and Jade can be proper princesses. Ruby and Jade are shown to be crushed when Sofia says they're embarrassing her. If you put Amber and friends in the roles of stern guardians and Ruby and Jade as Sofia's girlfriends, the plot would be virtually unchanged. The ending also shows all of them having a bit too much fun hanging around with each other.
  • In "The Little Witch", when Lucinda repeatedly picks on Jade, both Sofia and Ruby try to convince her not to get back at her, essentially acting like lovers trying to reach out to their partners. On a lighter note, the beginning has them make some jokes about their birthdays, and they're borderline flirtatious.
  • "The Amulet And The Anthem" and "In A Tizzy" both have scenes of Jade being mad at Sofia and Ruby respectively, with the former being more egotistical than normal and the latter seemingly slacking off and letting someone else do the work for her. Put Jade in the role of the girlfriend and the other two girls as her partners, and the scenes would stay virtually the same.
  • "Four's A Crowd" has Sofia getting jealous when Ruby and Jade spend more time with Amber than with her when preparing their float. The whole scenario is treated like an affair, as if she's being cheated on. Did we mention that this episode aired on Valentine's Day?
  • Jade's sentimental moments with Sofia and Ruby in "Princess Jade" can be quite close for comfort among them, mostly with Jade thinking on how she'll miss Ruby, yet also want to stay connected with Sofia.

Hildegard/Clio

  • Hildegard and Clio are together all the time, even without Amber at times. Something would be up.
  • In "The Big Sleepover", Clio is shown to be the one most tolerant of Ruby and Jade's antics, even wanting to join them before Hildegard stops her. The latter is essentially acting like s jealous girlfriend.
  • "Two To Tangu" and "Tea For Too Many" both have Clio agreeing to everything that Hildegard says, essentially playing the role of the lover acting like an obedient listener.
  • "Sidekick Clio" is the epitome of this. Hildegard goes away for a few days, with Sofia encouraging Clio to try out for the school play, but she says no. Why? Because it's not what Hildegard wants. When she gets back, her anger at Clio has a ting of jealousy at being snubbed and cheated on. Their tender moment at the end is like two lovers making up.
  • "The Royal School Fair" shows that Hildegard hasn't learned from "Sidekick Clio" and she waves at Clio as though she's a girlfriend trying to get her attention. Then after failing to get Clio to leave with her, Hildegard makes a sad pout like a girlfriend who's being ignored by her partner before walking off in a huff.

Robin/Mia

  • In "Clover Time" it's implied that Mia and Robin live together. That's not even the half of it. Their subplot in "The Leafsong Festival" has Robin picked for an audition over Mia, and the latter is jealous when the former is bragging about it. If this were written as a story about a strained romantic relationship, very little would have to change. They even have a heartfelt moment at the end.

Amber/Hildegard

  • Amber seems somewhat hurt when Hildegard hugs Sofia in "The Princess Stays In The Picture", as she "never hugs [her] like that."

James/Hugo

  • James and Hugo started out as enemies. In "Just One of the Princes", Hugo makes fun of James for helping Sofia, and James stands up to him. In "The Flying Crown", James warmed up to Hugo after the latter became friends with Sofia.
  • In "The Flying Crown", after James sprains his wrist with Hugo taking his place, James wasn't even jealous and seemed okay with Sofia giving Hugo a second chance. After Hugo and Sofia won the Flying Crown, Hugo kindly asked James if he wanted to hold the Crown.
  • "Lord of the Rink" shows how loyal James has become to Hugo. When Hugo's friends catch him ice-dancing, James is the most loyal to him, telling the others that Sofia went through the same experience and urging them to be okay with Hugo doing the same, and James looks at Hugo like a boyfriend looking at his girl. When Hugo's father King Garrick tries going after his son, who left hockey practice to perform in the ice-dancing recital, James asks the rest of the hockey team if they want to see Hugo ice-dancing, and they all go after him. After seeing Hugo and Sofia in an ice-dancing recital, James was the first to ask Hugo to teach him how to ice-dance.

James/Zandar

  • In "Once Upon A Princess", Zandar helps Sofia out of the fountain after the magic swing set throws her into it and mentions that James did the same to him. When he scolds James by pranking her and then walks off, James looks even more upset than he was with having tricked Sofia.
  • In "Two to Tangu", James and Zandar are almost never apart for the entire episode. They share the same magic carpet ride together, James barely notices that his sisters are gone in favour of staying with Zandar and supports him when he gets disappointed in failing to impress Hildegarde.
  • In "Princess Butterfly", James and Zandar each make half of a dragon costume but can't find each other during the party until the end of the contest. When they do meet, they actually push their classmates out of the way to get to each other. James also explicitly says that "[Zandar] completes [him]" in a tone that suggests he does in a romantic way, rather than completing their costume.
  • In "The Shy Princess", they high-five each other when teamed up for a project, pay barely any attention to Sofia when she comes to see what they're doing and both agree their castle has to have a big cannon. The finished result ends up being basically a huge cannon with a tiny castle on the top of it and when it receives less applause than Sofia and Vivian's, they both agree it should have been bigger.
  • They're both on the hockey team with Hugo and show great enthusiasm at learning how to ice-dance together. When their skates go awry, they're shown holding hands as they go spinning through the air.
  • In Baileywick's Day Off", they both only participate in Amber's pink tea party because there's food.
