Ho Yay / Interview with the Vampire

Go To

As noted elsewhere, this film might as well be titled Homoerotic Subtext: The Movie.

  • Lestat and Louis have buckets of this, to the point where Anne Rice initially wasn't sure the filmmakers would be able to get away with it without making Louis a woman (given that depictions of homosexual relationships in mainstream media wasn't seen as being as acceptable or marketable in the early 1990s).
    • In their first encounter, Louis had been... er... getting acquainted with a prostitute, with Lestat secretly following and watching the whole time.
    • The second time they meet, Lestat visits Louis in his bedroom, circling around him and stroking the curtains. His tempting Louis to become a vampire is an outright seduction.
    • The scene where Louis becomes a vampire is severely pushing the subtext part, with Lestat tackling Louis, lying on top of him and whispering in his ear, then panting and grimacing as Louis drinks his blood (especially when one considers that blood drinking is often interpreted as a metaphor for sex in vampire fiction).
    • Louis and Lestat are seen feeding from prostitutes together – in one scene, they both seduce and make out with a woman at the same time.
    • Lestat literally turns Claudia to keep Louis from leaving him, saying they’ll be "one big happy family".
    • When Lestat meets Louis again in the 1970s, he says he is "still beautiful" and how "the more [he] resisted, the more [Lestat] wanted [him]". He begs Louis to stay with him and seems heartbroken when he leaves.
    • Louis talking about how he eventually couldn’t bring himself to hate Lestat, feeling he resented him for the wrong reasons and acknowledging that Lestat at least tried, in his own way, to take care of Louis and build a life for them, is reminiscent of someone reflecting on a break-up.
    • The fact that Louis chooses to become a vampire and be Lestat's companion partly out of loneliness and despair after his wife and child died almost makes it seem like Louis was trying to rebound and move on after losing his family.
  • Armand and Louis arguably have even more Ho Yay.
    • They have an Almost Kiss.
    • Louis appears utterly entranced when Armand appears onstage.
    • Claudia expresses jealousy and anger when she realises Louis is considering "leaving her" to be with Armand.
    • Armand lets Claudia and Madeline be killed, and then allows Louis to kill his coven, just so he can have him to himself.
    • When Louis leaves Armand, he seems stricken and even declares that he will "die" without him. Louis states that although being his companion greatly appeals to him, he has to decline due to knowing what Armand did to Claudia.
  • A little bit between Daniel and Louis, (mostly from Daniel) namely at the end of the interview where Daniel believes Louis wants him to be his new "companion" and seems very eager to join him. Possibly motivated by more than just becoming a vampire? Also, a bit between Lestat and Daniel, with Lestat reaching out to touch Daniel's face and telling him not to be afraid, offering to turn him into a vampire as he did with Louis.
  • At a ball, Lestat chooses a handsome young man as his victim, leading him out to a dark corner of the grounds where they won't be disturbed. He strokes his face, and the young man doesn't seem too bothered by this, simply asking where they're going.
